Since a lot of people talk about various personal health issues here for a number of reasons, I wanted to pass along two documentaries I watched recently and thought have good information for people to review.
First, is one called "Fat Head". It is done by a science writer that basically refutes the "Supersize Me" documentary. It discusses how a high carb, low fat and protein diet is the cause of obesity in America, and it's exactly what the government and health groups are demanding people follow to "get healthy". It gives an excellent easy understanding of why this does not work and why you gain weight and get worse.
Second is one called "Fat Sick and Nearly Dead." It tracks a very sick overweight guy doing a juice fast for 60 days to improve his health. Has good information about why a juice fast can help someone. (Also they don't have to be for 60 days!) But basically the idea of letting the gi tract take a rest from using energy to digest food, and use that energy to deal with other things in the body it normally doesn't have a chance to.
What sucks is I’ve developed gout and I should avoid protein!
OK, I know you’re a secret agent and all but can you reveal your sources?
it’s not that simple.
Gout isn’t caused by PROTEIN, but PURINES.
There are MANY sources of these in foods you wouldn’t even normally think of, but se associate with “high-protein” like shellfish and legumes.
Beans, lentils, peas, peanuts can all cause gout flares, but at the root of it is a genetic problem.
Talk to your doctor about this, better yet, spend a little time online looking into it.
Good luck.
(a doctor)
Well yes and no.
Some protein is worse than others. Organ meat, shellfish and fish, yes. I’d minimize the beef, lamb nad pork. I haven’t heard them say the same negative warnings about chicken and turkey.
You can eat walnuts and cashews and other nuts high in protein.
Other things that could reduce your gout symptoms that may still allow you to eat meat without problems:
- increase water intake, lots of people are not hydrated enough
- increase vitamin c intake, as it helps deal with uric acid in the blood
- eat more berries - cherries, blueberries, raspberries - put them in a smoothie or icee type drink
- eat basil, it reduces gout pain 73% in 24 hours
- take milk thistle, it’s a blood purify herb
- limit alcohol
- if you eat sugar and lots of starches, you need to cut this down a lot, sugar and carbs are bad for gout
- limit fried food
But the big basic things that can help right away - drink more, cut the sugar hard, and take vitamin c and eat a sauce with basil in it. You will get relief in about 24 hours, you will feel improvement.
I’ll have to watch this. When I first started practice in 1992, the US Gov’t sent me a chart of the new and approved “food pyramid” heavily weighted at the bottom with carbs - like the people who followed the gov’t dietary recommendations.
The FIRST thing I said when I saw it was “now for the diabetes epidemic.”
Prescient? No. I’d taken several courses on nutrition as an undergrad and my med school also had a 4 semester hour class requirement so I at least had a clue.
Carbs are cheap. Protein and vegetables are expensive.
A pound of rice or a pound of low-fat sirloin on a budget.
But this is simply more evidence of government advocating and giving advice where it has no constitutional authority.
I had a few painful bouts with gout a few years ago, but put it behind me with slight diet modifications and swimming laps in the pool.
In the documentary they make mention that the same high carb, low protein/fat diet the government is pushing on people to “get thin” is the exact same diet they give feed animals to “get fat”.
The other interesting thing they note is that when these were being pushed hard the rise of depression books rose a great deal. When you go low on protein and fats, people get depressed. Think about the cult brainwashing diets they put people on, rice, no meats.
Yes I know all about purines. Still, high proteins are not really good for me, correct?
Bump
If you haven’t seen it, I think you might enjoy HILLARY! UNCENSORED. :)
If you want something sorta mindless, however, I would recommend Beware of Mr. Baker, about drum legend Ginger Baker.
On the subject of documentaries, I really, really enjoyed a Netflix series on World War I (I think it was called “14 Diaries”). It’s a European import, and it definitely tells the story from a different, non-US perspective. And it’s a very absorbing story about real people. I learned a great deal from it.
There IS some very good TV available, if you wade past the junk.
That “Fat Sick & Nearly Dead” guy is amazing, but I’m only turning up TONS of links to INTERVIEWS with him.
Is there a link to his actual documentary?
I really want to see this guy..!
It’s a well-established fact of cults to do exactly what you said. The mainstay of the diet given to new members of the Krishna consciousness movement was milk loaded with cane sugar. Coupled with near-endless hours of mindless repetitious chanting and sleep deprivation worked wonders to train or “brainwash” new converts.
On Amazon Fire TV they’ve got a couple channels on there where it can be viewed for free. That’s how I found it.
Once I watched all those and the two you mentioned I got serious about eating food that is good for my body which I found out was not necessarily what the government and the food industry deems Healthy food.
Yes.
We have to be the one most interested in our own health. We have to give a sh1t more than anyone else, because we have to live in it. Nobody else does.
The good news is that you can do a lot. YOu can get healthier even eating a so-called crappy diet, if you understand a few things.
