My brother, who lives in Arizona, is finally starting to see the light about arming himself and learning how to use it. Because it's Arizona, there are gun stores every 100 feet. ;-)
Question..... What's the best way for him to find out who to patronize? Is there a website that reviews gun shops (for service, quality, knowledgeable staff, etc.)?
My current advice is for him to go to a range or gun club that lets new shooters rent different models and has qualified instructors -- and also to ask lots of questions.
Thanks friends.
Might be that most small brick-and-mortar gun shops prefer to keep kind of a low on-line profile, for a variety of reasons.
Tom, I mean a place where customers can leave reviews of gun shops. Thanks.
I would not hesitate to ask the police chief or local sheriff about training and legality. The business recommendations will naturally follow.
Good luck on that. Gun owners are privacy freaks. But Yelp does have a bit of them. Enter gun store (city). Or try something like the AR15 forum.
Max, I was actually thinking of “a Second-Amendment Yelp” — but I thought Yelp was only for restaurants! I will check that out, thanks.
Go to your local Gun Rights club on FB and ask for recommendations locally. They will set you right. BamaCarry is where I know the lowdown on who to use and who not too.
the Pistol Parlour in Mesa has excellent prices and knowledgeable, friendly staff.
I have been going there for years
famous Phoenix site
Your advice is correct.
I found my first firearms by doing a ton of research online, and then going to a local store/range where I could try just about any pistol they sold.
Between what I read online and what felt good...I was able to settle on a proper firearm. Of course, since then I’ve been through a bunch more.
But, online reps are BS.
The other way is to just try a store and if the guys inside are A-holes (most of them are for some reason) leave. If you can find a store where they are knowledgeable and they pay attention and answer questions...you are golden.
Most of the stores here in MA are constantly filled with the same old guys telling stories every day. All they need are bar stools. Those places are horrible to “break into.” [I don’t mean rob, but socially.]
I’d be inclined to give this guy some business.

Excellent question.
I thought about doing a “Gun Store Review” blog, but it fell to other priorities.
I think hanging out on local gun activist internet site could get you good advice.
I will plug my cousin’s place, the Scottsdale Gun Club. When I visited, I thought it was well done, close to top rate.
But prices... I never paid for anything there. I did not buy ammunition, so I cannot say if their prices are good.

I am proud of what he and his wife have built with the place, but I have no idea how it compares for prices on the market.
I really need to spend more time with him. He publicly gave me credit for his career, and all I did was spend a day teaching a young relative basic gun safety and how to shoot... Acorns... Oak Trees..
Most gun shops have a crowd of regulars who hang around all day and make newcomers feel unwelcome. That is not a good business model.
Move out of New Jersey and join him where you will have much more freedom to exercise your 2nd Amendment rights. Then, you can advise him personally....
Damn good question Joe.
I will endorse the Scottsdale Gun Club, too. Fun place!
” how it compares for prices on the market”.
That in itself is a pretty good thought,
Do the big outfits like Pro Bass, Cabella’s, Etc. undercut the prices the small guys can offer? Try to drive em out of business.
I have often wondered why that is. Why don’t the owners shoo them out the door. Or, they should serve coffee.
I’ve stood at counters with stuff to buy and waited while these people tell their stories or spout their conspiracy theories.
I was in one shop while these two fat guys were talking about their bug out bags. Pretending to be interested, I asked them how it did on their ten mile hikes..you know, because the streets will be closed.
They just stared at me.
