Marquette University has begun the process to fire a tenured professor after he publicly said that students have the right to oppose gay marriage while in class, while also naming the professor who tried to ban it.
In a letter to Dr. John McAdams, Marquette informed the professor that the "University is commencing the process to revoke your tenure and to dismiss you from the faculty.
Marquette is taking this action after Dr. McAdams became aware that another professor, Cheryl Abbate, had banned a student from opposing gay marriage in her classroom. Parts of the incident were recorded secretly by the student.
Abbate equated being against gay marriage to being "racist" and "sexist." When the student told her that he had a right to voice his opinion because of the first amendment, he was told "you don't have a right in this class to make homophobic comments" and to drop the class.
Here is part of the recorded conversation transcribed:
The student ended up dropping the class.
Dr. McAdams then criticized this decision online, believing that freedom of speech should not be squashed, even if an opinion disagrees with that of a teacher.
In response, Marquette suspended Dr. McAdams, and has now moved to fire him.

What’s the point of tenure if it doesn’t protect political speech? That was the original reason for it...might as well DROP IT now and cut tuitions in half.
Lame.
If a right wing group had any guts, this would be in a mass mailing to donors asking them to no longer donate to the University if this prof is fired.
I have the perfect solution:
Cut off all taxpayer funding for education.
It’s a business, one that should be paid for by those enjoying the “benefits” (*snort) of it.
Let’s see how these institutions of liberal indoctrination do in the free market.
It sounds like our solar system would have been better off if Vegan Feminist Cheryl Abbate had stayed on one of the planets orbiting Vega.

Jesuit, as in Society of Jesus. A complete misnomer for an order that is blatantly anti-Christian.
In theory the AAUP fights to protect professors in cases like this, but I don't know if they will be interested since it isn't a case of a left-wing professor being fired for liberal or leftist views or activities...and the most they can do is generate a little negative publicity which can be ignored. Some institutions have been on their list of censured institutions for decades with no visible impact.

FIRE specializes in protecting the First Amendment in government schools. Marquette is private and the First Amendment does not apply.
Run by Jesuits.
The Academia better read up on the Tinker case.
I shot the breeze with several faculty members during his graduation weekend. I never felt bad that he attended Marquette.
I sure would never recommend it to any Catholics these days.
Free speech? Nah...
When exactly did being a ‘queer’ become not only socially acceptable, but a superior class ? This is a legitimate question. When I was younger, being a ‘queer’ was against the law. I’m sure that there is a PHD thesis somewhere in here. Just trying to advance the frontier of human knowledge.
McAdams should sue for the Marquette endowment fund as damages if he is terminated. They have 1.3 billion.
This country would benefit from a major purge of academia. They are poisoning the minds of the youth.
This all brings to my mind a situation when I gave an answer to/in a freshman college final exam. During the course of study we had been subject to reading from a variety of writers including news reporters. However, for me most of the assigned reading was from political leftists. The exam question was” What is propaganda?”. My response was to the extent that it was like stuff the prof had made required reading. The prof publicly commented that my answer was very unique in his class experience. However, I did get an A for the course. I had good vibes about the prof.
