This post is about an issue that is by now a bit dated (though the topic as such certainly isnt), but we have only just become aware of it and it seemed to us worth rescuing it from the memory hole. In late 2013, the then newest issue of the American Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM for short) defined a new mental illness, the so-called oppositional defiant disorder or ODD.
As TheMindUnleashed.org informs us, the definition of this new mental illness essentially amounts to declaring any non-conformity and questioning of authority as a form of insanity. According to the manual, ODD is defined as:
[ ] an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior, symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed.
In short, as Natural News put it: According to US psychiatrists, only the sheeple are sane.
Every time a new issue of the DSM appears, the number of mental disorders grows and this growth is exponential. A century ago there were essentially 7 disorders, 80 years ago there were 59, 50 years ago there were 130, and by 2010 there were 374 (77 of which were found in just seven years). A prominent critic of this over-diagnosing (and the associated over-medication trend) is psychologist Dr. Paula Caplan.

Only the sheeple are sane..... they're coming to take me away. Oh my!
I wish we wouldn't emulate EVERY single thing the Soviet Union did.
Check.
“I am SICK & TIRED of those of those who call you unpatriotic when you question authority!!!”
Je Suis Hilderbeast
So gays respect homosexual authority? Give me break
Government loves homosexuality, exploitation and rapes of all kinds to gain recruits
I think I should bulk order some Vodka and start learning some black humor.
I know he’s not exactly popular here, but Glenn Beck warned about this sort of thing beginning to happen years ago.
“I wish we wouldn’t emulate EVERY single thing the Soviet Union did.”
At this point, I’d be game for getting the free bottle of vodka they gave for showing up and voting.
Oh, and stop going to the movies. In Russian movies, everyone dies.
Just like in the Soviet Union.
RE: “If You Question Authority, You Are Mentally Ill”, Report Finds
And if you NEVER question authority and simply follow like a sheep, that makes you a ___________ (fill in the blank)
Also chess.
That’s alright. I;d rather have a mental illness than be completely brain-dead and utter “hope and change” every 2 hours.
Beck repeats what others say. So it would be second-hand info from him.
Incidentally, this is just too reminiscent of Soviet “psychiatry”, which dictated that those who question communism are mentally ill.
This is sensationalism. Just because that is ONE of the symptoms of a disorder, doesn’t mean that everyone displaying that behavior has a disorder. That’s not how diagnoses work.
For example, one of the symptoms of “Antisocial Personality Disorder” (psychopathy/sociopathy) is:
“Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest.”
That doesn’t mean that every criminal is a sociopath, it just means that sociopaths almost always display some criminal tendencies.
In the Soviet Union, a systematic political abuse of psychiatry took place[1] and was based on the interpretation of political dissent as a psychiatric problem.[2] It was called “psychopathological mechanisms” of dissent.[3]
During the leadership of General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev, psychiatry was used as a tool to eliminate political opponents (”dissidents”) who openly expressed beliefs that contradicted official dogma.[4]

Yes, and I apologize for repeating the other mentions of Soviet political psychiatry here. If anything ought to completely invalidate the DSM in anyone’s mind, it ought to be this.
