School Meal Costs Expected to Triple in Fiscal Year 2015

Local school districts around the country are going to take a huge financial hit in fiscal year 2015 because the cost of the school lunches they offer is expected to triple.

The combination of escalating costs because of harsher restrictions and the dwindling number of students enrolled in the program, which limits reimbursements from the federal government, are going to rigger the enormous rise in costs, according to the School Nutrition Association (SNA).

SNA is comprised of 55,000 school nutrition professionals around the country. SNA CEO Patricia Montague said, "School nutrition professionals have led the way in promoting improved diets for students and are committed to serving healthy meals. Despite all of these efforts, fewer students are eating school meals, and the escalating costs of meeting overly prescriptive regulations are putting school meal programs in financial jeopardy."

Drawing on data from the USDA, SNA asserted the USDA figures local school districts and states will have to “absorb $1.22 billion in new food, labor and administrative costs in Fiscal Year 2015 alone, up from $362 million in additional costs in FY 2014."(continued)

There's a trade association of school lunch ladies that numbers over 55,000 members? I think I'm seeing part of the problem.

Lets put this back to Mom....throw two pieces of white bread together with some cheapo sandwich meat....an apple....a banana...and a cup of city-water. Cost? Eighty cents.

Shouldn't "despite" be "because?"

All that and a bag of chips.

Naw, Mom can’t be trusted not to send a PBJ sending the entire school into lock down. Heaven forbid if she threw in a pop tart. And what if Akmed traded his turkey sandwich for Betty Sue’s ham?!? There’s be suspensions and law suits and stonings, oh my!

Just fire all the “school nutrition professionals” and let the cooks prepare ordinary American style food like we ate 40 or 50 years ago.

A big problem in America is too many “professionals” in every field who couldn’t find their posterior with a road map and a flashlight.

For as much as we pay in property taxes, and further pay in our share of the federal school lunch programs, it sure feels like we ought to be getting a heck of lot more return on our money.

This is one of the triad of responsibilities of the public school system - keeping ‘em fat, dumb, and happy!

I’ll ask this stupid question again - since when has it become the primary responsibility of the school system to feed students (in increasing numbers, for free???). WTF???

Oh, for heaven's sakes. Let the kids getting free breakfasts and lunches have to turn in some of their families food stamps to pay for their meals.

I've been in schools where some students in the AM throw away their free school breakfast and eat the McDonald's breakfast they brought with them.
