Matthew Lee Chegwidden feeds a deer herd at his house in Divide, Colorado. The deer are so friendly, they come up to the man like he’s some sort or Santa Claus or Mr. Snow White. Amazing! read mroe at albasun.com ///

Now that this is public, DNR will come and kill them all.

He better keep doing it now in perpetuity. They’ll depend on that food.

Dhimi deer. They get used to handouts. Feeder feels good. What happens to both when he can’t feed them? It could get ugly.

My neighbors used to put out dog food for the deer, and I finally realized that was why I had a perpetual deer track thru my property. Salt block will do it too. Deer are opportunists. (Deer hunters are too).

I’ll bet his neighbors love the deer manure out of him for this.

I did that for years.
Not the smartest thing I ever did.

It is potentially dangerous, as the critters are after all ‘wild’ no matter how tame they act.

But the worst part about it is that they have become so numerous and unafraid, that they now qualify as vermin.

I tease my acquaintances who like to hunt:
“Why do you drive dozens, hundreds of miles, spend a fortune on gear, spend days in miserable weather stalking the poor things, when you could just open the window there and smack one over the head with a 2X4?”

Some people feed them to prevent the deer from eating all their plants.

Fortunately if you catch it quick enough, it can be treated, but man oh man do those med’s put a smack down on your system. I have had two separate treatments (two different bites), I’m very cautious these days.

Feeding Can Do More Harm Than Good

excerpt:

It is illegal in Colorado to intentionally place or distribute feed, salt blocks or other attractants for big-game animals. This problem is mainly associated with deer.

In the winter, deer herds tend to move to lower elevations closer to homes and businesses. Some people may feel the deer do not have adequate food sources in the wintertime and believe that supplementing their diets with grain, corn or hay is helpful. In fact, the contrary is true.

Feeding deer is illegal, and cause harm to the deer. These deer are being feed by the DOW due to an especially severe winter.“People who feed deer do more harm than good,” said Trina Lynch, a district wildlife manager with the Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Welfare deer. We have had welfare birds. Still feed them a bit so that our cat has something to do. The deer - we had tenants on our farm who fed them. I didn’t care. Once those tenants moved we didn’t see any more deer sign. Our cat and our dogs keep the ground squirrels and tree squirrels under control. Our neighbors complain that especially the ground squirrels dig holes under their patios. Not us. We had a ground hog once but Mr. Barkley killed it.

I quit feeding them about 5 years ago, but they still keep coming by, hoping for a handout.

Generational memory I guess; their Momma or Granny must have told them about the the two leg that was always good for an apple, or some corn, carrots etc.

Really wish there was a button when one is doing blog or site pimping that required a donation to Free Republic for each article submitted (not that it would be approved for posting, just for submitting it..)
