The unprecedented manhunt in Boston that concluded successfully Friday night earned law enforcement authorities the gratitude of the nation.
But as relief replaces fear, the debate about what this episode means for the future is already beginning. And one of the most unsettling questions is whether the violence-related lockdown of a major U.S. city an extraordinary moment in American history sets a life-altering precedent.
There are already worries that the effort to protect the people of Boston contained an element of overreaction. Local authorities told the city and nearby suburbs to shelter in place throughout the day and into the evening. They closed businesses, shuttered government buildings and suspended all public transportation in the metro area.
That decision concerned some political leaders and policy experts.
Former Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) said it is hard to imagine what could justify directing the entire population of the city to shelter in place.
Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, stopped short of directly criticizing the decision, but he lamented the development as a win of sorts for terrorists....

There were pics yesterday of just such a thing. Let me see if I can find them.
“Former Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) said it is hard to imagine what could justify directing the entire population of the city to shelter in place.”
That’s pure BULLSHIT...it was a 20 square block area were they were in ACTIVE pursuit of armed and deangerous TERRORISTS that had already set off two bombs...shot a cop...engaged in a high speed pursuit while lobbing pipe bombs out the window...
I listened to the boston scanners all night...they werent “systematiclly” searching houses...they were knocking...doing quick looks...checking on residents...and clearing back yards looking for armed terrorist on the run and making sure he hadnt taken anyone hostage...
And since when do we take shit that democrats say seriously ANYWAYS???
The shutdown of Boston was one of the dumbest things I have ever seen.
It was a cluster _ _ _ _ to apprehend one (1).
I can’t imagine what chaos there would be with 100-200 bad guys loose.
There was another occasion in daylight near a Starbucks where shots were heard, police started running down a side street and then there was a wholebunchalotta shots heard. Never heard anything more about that incident.
I guess that’s why they were using mainly stun grenades at that point.
It was all a dry run anyway. Now they know they can control a significant part of the populace with scary actions and words. The "next time" something like this occurs, there won't be a "request".
Were they really entering and searching homes without warrants? If they had knocked on my door, I would have told them that we were safe, hadn't seen anyone suspicious (unless I had, of course), and to move along (after wishing them luck and to stay safe).
Finally, I thought it was quite funny that the local news "media" beat the FBI to the sister's residence!!
Very good questions.
Every now and then a major snow storm hits where I live.
The local authorities go on the radio and TV asking that people stay off the streets.
Most things shut down.
It is not an order. The worse that will happen to you if you go out and have to be rescued is that you will be featured in a news story and all your neighbors will laugh at you for the next twenty year.
If the Boston lockdown was like that then ok.
If it was a forced lockdown then there is a problem.
It might be useful to mention that this past winter, MA had a snowstorm, and the governor ordered everyone off the roads.
We get bad storms all the time in MA. No governor has ever ordered everyone off the roads for 24 hours before.
We are in a new era, led by people like Deval Patrick and Barack Obama -- the government is in tight control of all aspects of your life. America has turned the corner, and finding a way back will not be easy.
Thanks, Sarge.
One time in my corner of Texas, there was a local jailbreak, with a loose escapee regarded as armed and dangerous. That night, a foggy night, I had to make a drive to visit my parents, ten miles away. On EVERY single street corner, throughout the neighborhood and entire town, there were about 5 to 8 citizens standing by, with rifles in hands. All on the lookout, protecting their community.
It was really something to behold. I could be wrong, but this isn’t something I’d expect to see up in the liberal, gun-hating northeast.
That ain't right.
Gov. of CT did just that back in late 70's.
I think Boston did the best they could with the situation they had. Of course armchair quarterbacks will condemn the decision, but I think it was brilliant and a 100 percent success! Congrats to the entire city of Boston!!! What a first rate city!
It would be very unusual for a cell tower not to have backup power.
Not condemning any decision, just asking what should be very simple questions, that quite frankly, should’ve been asked and answered quickly by the MSM.
Martial law is a big deal to me.
Always wondered - any relation to Sir Napsalot?
Totally agree, Guy. I recall the storm orders now.
Just how far down this road are we going to drive before we hit the brakes?
Sure it will.
Try 5,000
