A down economy appears to be good times for at least one Colorado company.
Many disaster-shelter companies across the nation can't keep up with the demand from their customers, who all appear to be worried about the future.
The Colorado company was recently profiled on the show "Doomsday Preppers," hosted on the National Geographic Channel.
Owner Riley Cook says their phones have been ringing off the hook ever since, with people requesting everything from survival kits to advice.
As a major project, the company is currently working on a shelter that puts most homes to shame.
The nearly half-million dollar bunker is being built for a client near Chicago.
The Summit Daily News reports the shelter even employs high-tech lithium-ion batteries that cost $25,000 (U.S.) each.
The powerful batteries are the same ones used by NASA to power the Mars Rover.

You are right one reason for OPSEC. There are plenty of people who a trustworthy enough under normal day to day situations that would quickly and with no thought cut your throat just as fast as any street thug during SHTF. I’ve see them even here on FR boasting about how they don’t prep other than guns and ammo, which they will use to take what they need. Almost as worse are the scoffers who make fun of preppers, but when the SHTF they will be the first to run to them and they will have the need to punish those who prep for proving them wrong. They will also be among the first to run to the Authorities to report your preps.

Prepping is nothing more than insurance against something bad will happen. Of course many believe something bad is very likely to happen. Civilizations do fail and wars do take place.
Heck I’ve been through quite a few hurricanes. Only a couple were bad but people around me lost power for 3 weeks. Many people had nothing to eat or drink.
Every single one of these has to have a building permit before it can be installed. I wonder how many county employees will show up when things get bad.
Could be the sheriff comes knocking looking for food ‘hoarders’.

I've seen designs including proximity alarms, periscopes and flame throwers.
I would have to image people who had less money for such installations may not have adequate defenses. However there are many who would have some truly nasty surprises in store.
Besides, I think the tendency would be towards concealing an air vent. If it's raised, perhaps bushes or weeds would be adequate concealment.
Regardless, let's pray theory is never put to test.

How do you now if they will even let you get close enough to accomplish that? Most who go the bunker routine ALSO have extensive surveillance/security plans to PREVENT what you would attempt to do. Your plans may be rudely interrupted by an unfriendly occupiant.
My Family’s Safe Unit fresh air vent has 8 M18A1 Claymores (well-hidden boobytraps) around it. No one gets through to it, alive. Except me.
