After days of calls, emails, tweets, comments and posts, I finally bought the exact gun I wanted, the two-tone version of the Sig Sauer P229 9mm. Im so excited to shoot my new purchase, but in the nations capital, it's not that simple. Buying a gun doesnt mean you get to have the gun.
Washington, D.C. has a list of firearms that are eligible to be registered. The make, model and even the color (two-tone) of the gun I wanted was on the list, but I had a bear of a time finding one with a D.C.-legal 10-round magazine. The standard version has a 13-round capacity.
(snip)
And, that is the but in this story. Although I have paid and ordered the gun, I cant take possession of it until it is transferred to Mr. Sykes, and I get an approved registration certificate.
In order to get this certificate, I still have to do the following: take a written test on the citys firearm laws; get Mr. Sykes to fill out the application form; have the eligibility form notarized; get two passport photos and prove that my eyesight is better or equal to the drivers license requirement (20/70 in best eye and field of vision of at least 140 degrees).
Next, I have to take all the forms to the registry office; pay $60 in fees; wait five days for the application to be approved; wait an additional five days for Mr. Sykes to be able to release my gun; and take the gun to the police for a ballistics test.
Finally, if I pass all of these steps, I should be able to take possession of the gun that I already bought.

Gun laws only empower politicians and criminals, but I repeat myself.
How can people live under such repressive governments?
Too bad you don’t live in Virginia.
I wonder how the media would treat the RKBA, if in order to exercise their first amendment rights, they had to jump through these exact same loops to publish an article.
Of course armed criminals, drug dealers and street thugs who frequent the streets of DC all have complied with this law so its residents are now safe from gun crime. That law abiding citizens wanting to exercise their Constitutional RIGHT to have a firearm have to go through this ludicrous process is just plain stupid. Just how does this process reduce gun crime in Washington DC as the criminal element certainly doesn’t comply with these laws ?
People need to learn to “vote with their feet”. Emily, just move to Georgia ... we’ll treat you right.
Aaaaah. Therein lies the question, doesn't it? I have asked that question of gun grabbing liberals to which I get a quick, hmmmf, in reply. The discussion goes no further.
It’s a damned good question.
Maybe Brian Williams can be made to ask...
I had a SIG p229 in .40 S&W, and it was the dagnabbinest jammin’ gun I ever had.
If I used the creem of the preem ammo, it didn’t jam. But with the good old middlin’ Winchester, Remington and Federal American Eagle ammo, at least one round per magazine would be a hanger.
Anybody else ever have that trouble? Obviously I bought the SIG because from everything I’d read or experimented with, it was supposed to be “as good as it gets”.
It was probably a lemon, which is why I am sour on the gun, and the brand for that matter.
I traded it straight across for a Springfield 1911 which I am very proud of — and nary a jam with that affordable ammo.
1911...there is no substitute :)
I too bought a Springfield 1911 a1 in. 45 auto.then I gave it to my daughter.
I have a Kimber but I miss the Springfield.
A gun doesn’t mind if you buy another gun
I’d rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.
screw ‘em, wait until you have to use it and then, when charged, sue them again for unconstitutional restrictions on access.
This list of crap is unacceptable obstruction and infringement of the 2nd Ammendment.
What happens when you run out of places to run to?
I hear ya.
I’ve always wanted a Sig and finally picked up a used P239 in the .40, which I—like you apparently—figured would have plenty enough punch to avoid the epizoodiks that seem to plague the smaller Sigs.
But sho’ nuff I’m running into one misfire per every couple mags which to me negates the entire idea of carrying a sidearm. What is a guy supposed to do in an emergency? Assure himself that what the hell, my odds are 10 or 15 to one against a dud?
So far I have only been firing the Winchester 165 gr. baldies...but, one, a top-shelf handgun ought to work just fine on good target rounds, and two, who the hell has the $ to practice regularly with premium hollow points?
I also have a SA XD sub in the .40 and it NEVER jams or misfires...and even my tiny little Kahr PM9 pops along perfectly as long as I keep it reasonably clean.
Go figure.
“...and take the gun to the police for a ballistics test.”
Not often you see 2 Constitutional Amendments (4th & 5th) violated in order to violate another Constitutional Amendment (2nd).
And I thought MA was bad.
Ahhh...you've never owned a Firestar M43 9mm. That hunk of iron would beat the one-hang-per-mag ratio hands down on any day of the week.
Of course, there was a fix. Drill out the pin hole for the ejector, install the factory designed upgrade (if you can find one) and put in a heavier recoil spring. A Wolff 24 pounder would do. But chambering a round with that sucker is a chore. I'm glad I sold it and got a Rueger LC9.
I also like the XD...but if I can only have one, I would choose the 1911...
With a Glock or XD, when I am out of ammo, I have a piece of plastic. With a 1911, when I am out of ammo I still have a 5 lb club... ;)
