Booze I have used in eggnog...rum, cognac, rum, really cheap brandy, rum, Jack Daniels, Jameson Irish whiskey, more rum...blimey! I’m beginning to sound like Capt. Jack Sparrow!

You can use any that you like but brandy is usually used in a English style eggnog and rum is used in a American Colonial style eggnog while bourbon is used in a Revolutionary style eggnog. Basically they used the cheapest stuff they could find. :) I don't recomend you do the same if it is for a party. Unless you don't like the guests.
Use a lighter rum then you would for a Planters Punch if you like the flavor of rum.

My first choice is rum (good rum like Gosling’s Black Seal, not the lightly molasses flavored grain alcohol that gets passed off as rum in some parts), second choice is brandy (usually Metaxa because that’s what I usually have handy).
I realize there are bourbon partisans, but I regard the proper ways of drinking bourbon as: straight, in a mint julep, or in a hot toddy.

I’ll just throw it away and drink the Bourbon or Rum on Ice. To heck with the egg crap!!!
