OK, i wanna share with you my own experience. (be patient with my English, i am from far away ) I am from Bosnia, and as some of you may know it was hell here from 92-95, anyway, for 1 whole year i lived and survived in a city of 50 000- 60 000 residents WITHOUT: electricity, fuel,running water,real food distribution, or distribution of any goods, or any kind of organized law or government.The city was surrounded for 1 year and in that city actually it was SHTF situation. (SNIP) Some of us was better prepared, but most of families had food for couple of days, some of us had pistol, few owned AK-47 when all started.

Anyway, after one month or two, gangs started with their nasty job,hospital looked like butchery, police force vanished, 80 percent of hospital staff gone home. I was lucky, my family was big in that time (15 members in one big house, 5-6 pistols, 3 Kalashnikov s) so we lived and survived, most of us. (SNIP) After three months rumors started abouth first deaths from starvation,deaths from low temperatures, we stripped every door , window frame from abandoned houses for heating, i burned all my own furniture for heating, lot of people died from diseases, mostly from bad water (two of my family members), we used rain water for drink, several times i ate pigeons, once i ate rat. Money did not worth sh..

we traded things, black market worked, few examples: for 1 corned beef can you could have woman for couple of hours(sounds bad, but it was reality) i remember, most of that womans were just desperate mothers, candles, lighters,antibiotics,fuel,batteries, rifle ammo and of course food, we fight like animals for that.

I’m working on getting more antibiotics

How does one do that, exactly? Will doctors prescribe some for contingencies?

I am about 12 pages in. The only mention Selco said he traded what little gold he had early during SHTF. He does repeatedly talks about trading ‘stuff’ for ‘stuff’ and I have always said that during true SHTF that’s how its going to be. If you are going to trade a bag of rice its going to be for something else that you can use! Not for a piece of shinny meter that might benifit you sometime in the future when things get back to normal.

Antibiotics have a limited shelf life.

Here is a post with text lifted from somewhere unknown written by a retired physician. Basically, he addresses the question of how to stock antibiotics, and surprisingly he recommends antibiotics for fish tanks. Same as for humans but prescription needed. This list is taken from his post, and he says that most expiration dates on antibiotics are baloney, except for tetracycline which will go toxic if stored too long....okay, scratch that one from the list, but I'm going to place an order for some of this stuff asap. I had wondered many times how to address the problem of stocking antibiotics, and now I know.

* FISH-MOX (amoxicillin 250mg)
* FISH_MOX FORTE (amoxicillin 500mg)
* FISH-CILLIN (ampicillin 250mg)
* FISH-FLEX Keflex 250mg)
* FISH-FLEX FORTE (Keflex 500mg)
* FISH-ZOLE (metronidazole 250mg)
* FISH-PEN (penicillin 250mg)
* FISH-PEN FORTE (penicillin 500mg)
* FISH-CYCLINE (tetracycline 250mg)

"I already had hygiene pretty well covered but he made it very plain that lack of it costs more lives than anything else."

Yup. Most folks don't realize that in a SHTF scenario it won't be the zombies, gunfire, or starvation that get you. Infection will be your number one threat. When ensuring adequate hygiene, Step One is a water purification system. All the meds in the world wont save you if you don't have potable water for cleansing wounds, cooking, and drinking. Absent that, septicemia, strep and cholera will overwhelm all preps.

My father , a WW2 vet , had a job with the dept of the army overseeing shipments of relief items to Europe in the 1950’s ... a canned ham dinner with whoever the new “girlfriend” was and her family would entitle him to a full nights stay ,, the family knew and couldn’t care less ... food in general and especially meat was that scarce.

******************************************
You can order antibiotics , no prescription , on the internet ... from almost any pet medication site ...

Most countries , especially poor countries , have no prescription requirements for ANY drugs ... poor people can’t afford a doctor ,, they go to the farmacia and the pharmacist prescribes and fills common items.. any caribbean , or latin american pharmacy will sell you a box (100) amoxicillim or penicillan ,,, cipro is cheap also ... next cruise vacation to somewhere buy a few boxes and mail them to yourself.

It’s also a VERY good idea to get some medications for common parasites , especially intestinal parasites.

"...lot of people died from diseases, mostly from bad water..."

Sock away more water filtration equipment - doesn't take much space (or money).
Guns and ammo are no-brainers, but we can easily forget water equipment.

"I guess I’ll be stocking up on Spam!"

I have a good supply of corned beef hash but I'll lay in a little extra just for the ladies, ahem.

Anyway...previously I read a report from this area and their troubles. I was suprised to read that one of the shortages they had was containers. So...I'm saving containers now.

I’ve read up to page 23 and he says he believes in God but not in any specific religious dogma, also that his wife is a Catholic. What leads you to believe he is a Muslim, from reading elsewhere? If you are correct, it is likely an ethnic one, but not a practicing or believing one.

I think this is extremely noteworthy (among other very noteworthy comments):

I have another question too, please

You mentioned that a couple of days before, the government said everything was fine. Were there rumors before in which people were trying to prepare by stocking up before it happened or was everybody caught off guard?

Good question

Of course there was some signs, but we did not see it, or we did not wanted to see it. Some major figures left town before everything started, we knew that, i seen that, we just could not believe that kind of things can happen to normal people. I quess it is in human nature that some things can not be comprehended.Maybe i ve seen that something bad is gonna happen, i just keep (like most people) saying: "oh at the end they will fix that"

I think next time gonna be easier for me to see that something is coming. I believe that most important thing is to accept fact that bad things can and eventually will happen. And of course i don t believe to much to main media, i rather go online and try to research things and separate facts from lies.

You see situation in my country (and in most surroundings countries) now is : Crime rate is increasing, unemployment is going mad, there is feel of desperation, prices of food and fuel constantly going up, politicians are corrupt more than ever, drugs, gangs. So i would be idiot now to to say : "Oh somebody will fix everything" I think there s more chance that everything going to explode trough some kind of collapse.

From Wikipedia:

Diarrhea (from the Greek διάρροια meaning "flowing through"[2]), also spelled diarrhoea, is the condition of having three or more loose or liquid bowel movements per day.[3] It is a common cause of death in developing countries and the second most common cause of infant deaths worldwide. The loss of fluids through diarrhea can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. In 2009 diarrhea was estimated to have caused 1.1 million deaths in people aged 5 and over[4] and 1.5 million deaths in children under the age of 5.[1] Oral rehydration salts and zinc tablets are the treatment of choice and have been estimated to have saved 50 million children in the past 25 years.[1]
