Obama nod for Occupy Wall Street ("The modern-day equivalent...of the civil rights movement")

He could not resist drawing the obvious parallel. When United States President Barack Obama spoke at the unveiling of a towering, 30-foot sculpture of civil rights leader Martin Luther King on Washington's National Mall, he came as close as he could to endorsing Occupy Wall Street, the modern-day equivalent of the 1960s social movement.

Reflecting on Dr. King's Mahatma Gandhi-inspired belief in non-violent civil disobedience as a means of protest, Mr. Obama said if Dr. King were still alive, “I believe he would remind us that the unemployed worker can rightly challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonising all who work there.”

He also struck a blow for workers; unions which have watched helplessly as numerous Republican-controlled U.S. states such as Wisconsin have whittled away their collective bargaining rights, for example to set wages. The President said Dr. King would have believed “that the businessman can enter tough negotiations with his company's union without vilifying the right to collectively bargain”.

The ultimate blow Mr. Obama delivered was of course to his Republican and Tea Party opponents in Congress who have been single-mindedly fixated on the goal of cutting public expenditures even in the worst of the recession.

Gauntlet

He threw the gauntlet at those parties saying, “He would want us to know we can argue fiercely about the proper size and role of government without questioning each other's love for this country... with the knowledge that in this democracy, government is no distant object but is rather an expression of our common commitments to one another.”

But it was the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the challenges it poses to a worsening rich-poor divide in the U.S. that seemed to catch Mr. Obama's imagination the most. Evoking the harsh reality that Dr. King and other leaders of the civil rights movement faced, Mr. Obama reflected on how little things had changed in 43 years. He said, “As was true 50 years ago, as has been true throughout human history, those with power and privilege will often decry any call for change as ‘divisive.'”

I totally agree with you. Obama wants to suspend elections. Why do you think the whole country has been arming up for the past 3 years. People are not that stupid.

Tell me, if you can, what their tactics might look like. How do they plan to get around the fact that the right is much more numerous, better armed and trained? Most of the armed forces, law enforcement and veterans are over on this side of the divide.

So, given the melanin content of the skin of the vast majority of the Fleabaggers, our Dear Reader is saying that it’s past time that Americans of Caucasian descent have the same rights as any other Americans?

Just trying to take him seriously for once. (and it’s not working).

Marx in the Parks. Fighting for our civil right to shit on cop cars
Meanwhile, the kind of government they're agit-propping for would give those same cops total immunity and license to dole out a very painful summary punishment to anyone who dared do that to a cop car. Seems like a lot of people have very short memories; the dictatorship of the pro-elite-ariat has to be enforced by "tank diplomacy" (e.g. Tiananmen Square).

I'm not really into conspiracy theory, but this Occupy stuff didn't just start up as some grass-roots movement.

It was orchestrated to look that way.

Soros, and yes Obama and other Communists started this, comfortable in the knowledge that the Useful Idiots would come crawling out from under their rocks as soon as the idea was presented.

Tell me, if you can, what their tactics might look like. How do they plan to get around the fact that the right is much more numerous, better armed and trained? Most of the armed forces, law enforcement and veterans are over on this side of the divide.

You see the tactics. It was the same with the agitations for more Government--moving to the Left--in the 1930s. It was the same with the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s & 1960s, including the terribly destructive Immigration Act of 1965. Agitation, nuisance demonstrations, "peaceful" occupations, etc., all punctuated with constant sloganeering--the standard for the Left for centuries--all intended to bend the perceptions of what is right & wrong, fair & unfair.

Of course, if the economics deteriorates to a point where an actual Nazi or Communist type takeover becomes possible, you might look to the German or Soviet model. But the Left has accomplished a great deal--all very unfortunate if you understand how a healthy society works--simply by altering the social & moral perceptions of susceptible elements of the population.

For a contemporary example of the point. You mention the armed forces. I agree with your statement; yet the Administration has now apparently OK'd the oxymoron of "Gay Marriage," for the military! (At least so, it has been reported in a usually reliable source!) Would that have not seemed utterly preposterous even three years ago?

We have too many people relying upon what seems obvious, rather than fully understanding the tactics of those who actually seek to destroy everything we believe in.
