The rest -- Romney and Perry et all -- are cheerleading Obama on this. Why? Maybe because they just can't wait to have this kind of power for themselves.
I would give my right arm for the power to slaughter sub-human terrorist filth unilaterally!
Good question. If Bush had done this, the MSM and the Left would be screaming, “BUSH SLAUGHTERS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN!”
So tell me, how is killing an enemy on the battle field in a war unConstitutional?
Personally, I am sick of Paul and his blame America first rants and his apparent worshipers.
I am not a Ron Paul fan, or anything Ron Paul, but he has a point.
Remember, they declared the Tea Party terrorists. What is to stop them from killing us?
Al Awalki is a citizen?
Hey Ron, we used to call ***holes like this traitors.
He was killed on his own battlefield working for the enemy trying to kill Americans.
Case closed.
And Nazi Germany Army and aggression was 15 + years in the rear view mirror. To choose the parallel as he has done proves nothig other than his stupidity, which is his Constitutional right. But if he wants the US military to send a mission into Yemen, or wherever to capture Alwaki, then he needs to volunteer to lead it.. er, on second thought, go along for the ride. More Lew Rockwell from Paul. Why doesn't Rockwell run for President and eliminate the middle man?
“The rest — Romney and Perry et all — are cheerleading Obama on this.”
Because the person “assasinated” was an expatriate involved in sedition against the United States and was giving aid and comfort to enemies of the U.S. He no longer merited any Constitutional protections because he was in a state of war against this country. My only regret is that Mr. Obama gets to take credit for this.
Ron Paul is an absolute fool on matters of foreign policy; a dangerous one. Only the naive and drug sellers/users support him.
If you make a bunch of public statements on your website promoting war against the United States (or Jihad against the great Satan, or anything that means war against the United States), you are no longer a criminal, you are an enemy combatant.
Also, while making due process available is required by the 5th amendment, the person needs to avail themselves of due process, and not resist due process and force a confrontation with possible deadly consequences.
Al Awlaki could have had due process any time, if that's what he wanted. I doubt he would have been shot on site if he returned to the US and proceeded to turn himself in, provided he kept his hands up and in plain site the whole way.
The Constitution was been screwed over since there is no longer a formal declaration of war. We are left with Presidential work-arounds and UN resolutions. If we can bomb other nations without a formal declaration of war, the President becomes a dictator. The last time we had a nation united in war was WW II when we formally declared war.
When you take up arms against the United States and murder its people, citizen or not, due process is doing what it takes to get rid of you, not a court date.
Good for Ron Paul, he didn’t say, as many here would, ‘principal’!
Sure hope he was guilty. But, we’ll just have to trust in the government. I guess now the prevailing wisdom is that capturing with the intent to extract intelligence is bad, but killing from drones is good. A hellfire up the hoo-ha is okay, but waterboarding is torture.
This is interesting because some libertarians that I read support what they call the Swiss method of self defense which is arming alll citizens, teach them gurrilla warfare and aim at killing/assassinating all in leadership whether it be platoon commander, king, general.... and so on.
the little guys fold when leadership is dead...Think of the film “V”.
It wasnt the people fighting back at the end that stopped the tyranny, it was the assasinations of the leadership.
I dunno—should we have tried, before a jury, the CSA before engaging in battle at Gettysburg? They were Americans too.
With that said—Awlaki had dinner at the Pentagon—they could have nabbed him then.
During WWII many American citizens went to Germany to fight for Hitler. When captured and discovered to be Americans they were often summarily executed as traitors by military tribunals. This was and is entirely legal by a hundred years or more worth of international rules of war.
A few years back the Rats tried to claim that US citizens who joined alQaeda were entitled to lawyers and civil trials. This is completely false. However corrupt left wing pols ignored the law and used their false claim simply for another hammer to beat Bush with. Obama was one of these pols. Now he gets to deal with an issue that he helped to create which is too bad for him.
But it is completely legal to kill US Citizens who take up arms in foreign lands against the USA. They can be killed on the field or sleeping in their beds or anywhere any time unless they surrender at which time they are subject to military jurisdiction. Ron Paul and the ACLU are completely wrong.
I don’t know about anyone else. But on a scale of 1-10 of constituitonal violations over the last 60 years, this one rates about a 2.
Traitors who attack America and fight with our declared enemies are subject to termination.
The only problem here is that Obama and his pals attacked Bush for fighting our enemies, and now he’s doing it himself, probably intended as a campaign trick.
