Over the past week, my vocabulary of 268,391 words expanded by one, and that word is prepper. A prepper is not to be confused with a preppie, who is a person who has attended an exclusive private high school. A prepper is someone who believes that The End is nigh, that society is breaking down, and that if you want to be around to see whats left, its best to prepare for The Wrath to Come.

The mobs back then were more effective..remember the long hot summers a few bottles of ripple on a street corner on a Saturday night was all it took. Spending today is quite restrained compared to then nobody thought nor cared about it then there was no problem throwing government money at anything.
Sorry, I take then over now any day of the week.
Agreed!
The NW insanity of not burying power lines - so that Doug firs with their shallow roots and 150’ height can blow over every time the wind blows, and take the power out for up to several weeks - has helped my prepper focus immensely. Those prolonged drills, especially when also snowed in due to shitty road clearing, are wonderful opportunities to get it right.
The author of this article comes across as a wee bit clueless, and certainly late to the party.
I have some nostalgia for those days or my youth but at least for me they weren’t that great when compared to my life today.
The big difference is the fact that we are at war with an enemy that wants to destroy our way of life and we are not fighting a proxy war between two super powers.
But I have faith that our military is more effective than our political leaders and will ultimately prevail.
Well, if they’re gonna fall, I’m hoping they fall on the electric lines somewhere else and not on my house!
I got a couple around me that could literally turn my house into toothpicks. Quite a few over 100 foot, ones gotta be at least 140 feet. If the wind gets to blowing really bad from a certain direction, I power things down and bail to a motel for the night.
If you plan on using Ramen as a ‘surival snack’, just make sure you up your water intake. If the noodles aren’t already saturated when you ingest them, they’ll soak up a lot of fluid in your gut. Same thing goes for pretty much any other dehydrated food you add to your staples.
Yeah, we think about that from time to time - but try not to!
A FRepper?
I understand what you’re saying. I just figure if a family has 200 lbs. of food, they’ll be a lot better off than others that don’t.
I know there are tons of other things that a family would need to sustain themselves for any length of time.
As for waking up cold and dark, today was my towns’ 50th straight day of being over 100 degrees. I can’t even remember what cold feels like. lol
First order of business: food and water.
Then guns to protect your food and water.
Yes, a 'blog' column within the magazine, but interesting that it appeared at all.
Two days ago, a radio host in Pittsburgh was talking about Iran and the fact that Iran is practicing to launch nuclear missiles that detonate at apogee, releasing an electro-magnetic pulse. Another reason to be prepared. Heritage Foundation is presenting a seminar about the dangers of EMP.
http://www.heritage.org/Events/2011/08/EMP-Day
You can listen online on Monday, August 15, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
Keynote speaker is Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD).
Iran is building missle sites down in Chavez land. If completed the missles will have adequate range to hit the eastern half of the US.
Iran has also placed an object in orbit, meaning they could hit anywhere in the US with a small payload.
Thanks for the info driftdiver. I didn’t know that.
My collage kid says this is the most likely “attack” we will face.
My husband laughs at me for trying to prep, but he is fine with couponing, and does that even without my reminding now that he’s found out how much we save. About at least $500. per year.
So, I get multiples because of the coupons, we stock some, and rotate. I feel I’m waaaayyy behind where I should be. If for no other reason than the raising cost of consumables.
But I do have lots of incandescent light-bulbs. :)
HA! Didn’t finish my thought about the light-bulbs!
IF we suffer a electro-mag. pulse attack, my lovely stock of light-bulbs will just mock me.
But I want them anyway.
