What you would be looking at would be civil unrest in most mayor US cities and thousands of minor ones as well. Once the images of people looting and getting away with it hit the TV youre looking at thousands of bums thinking of doing the same thing and rushing out the door to the nearest store. That gets bad pretty fast. Youre talking about looting, fires, closed stores, destruction of vehicles and private property, and given US context some gang related activity taking advantage of the lawless situation as well to settle scores. While invasion of residential properties wont be as common as the looting of commercial property, it can happen in several cases.

Teenagers? Well Pittsburgh school system sucks.... I just found out last night my son and his wife will be homeschooling their kids (fianlly) for the remainder of their school years. Kids are very excited. Has been talked about for couple years but the decision was made. I am very happy about this!

"Yup, I am rural AND mega Prepped as well. I will live life as usual, until tshtf here, then I am ready."
Well said. There are also many ways to make a home unapproachable to some but safe and inviting to real friendlies. In my case, this place is a little far out for anyone who would fill up with, say, fuel that costs $10 per gallon or more during a default/dollar collapse.
The climate is also a no-go for anyone who would try hanging around while trying to case it (way cold for nine months of the year and too hot during summer days--not much atmosphere overhead). And the elevation--oxygen debt really fast for anyone lacking enough red blood platelets (altitude sickness common in visitors who go up too fast).
At the same time, there have been drawbacks and difficulties in building here (too far from electrical power hookups along with the formerly mentioned difficulties and more). I envy those prepared to take the route of launching yachts on the oceans.

This youth riot in Pittsburgh was the offshot of a church street carnival where the teenagers left the daytime carnival and started to swarm local businesses with the intent of causing trouble. Like a rave. Anybody caught in the path of this raving hoard is in danger of their personal safety.

"For me, when power goes out no water,..."
You would need a backup power system comprised of a transfer switch (to separate the grid power circuit from your backup circuit), an inlet (like an outlet, but with prongs instead of socket holes), an outdoor safety switch, generator and cable to connect the generator to the inlet. ...to the best of my memory offhand, as I use that kind of system with no power grid hookup near here (and don't need the transfer switch, myself, but you would). ...needs proper wiring, including ground wire between all boxes not already connected to each other by metal conduit, and the well casing.
BTW, you could build a manual pump system for a well that shallow instead of what I explained. Mine's a deep well, so a manual pump system would be as expensive as what I installed here.
Hope that helps. I remember some good agricultural advice from you a while back and am still thankful.

"difficulties in building here" You can say that again. I'm finishing our retreat. To get there you have to go to the middle of nowhere, then 20 miles down the dirt road to the other dirt road and take that another 5 miles.

How many do you think you’d have to shoot before the others ran?

How long will the water last in those plastic jugs you get at the grocery store?
Sorry to ask such a rudimentary question.

FerFAL lives in Argentina and has an excellent survival blog:

He is very knowledgeable about self-defense and weaponry. He has a great sense of humor too, and is politically a libertarian (hates the Kirschners, Peronistas, etc.). I hope he finds a way to get to the US.

That location reminds me of the mountain log cabin the family had in my hometown. The last mile you were pretty much on a road with grass growing between the tire ruts. Nothing else out there but our cabin. And before that you traveled from a secondary road to many branches off that to a couple dirt roads and then the main drive to the cabin itself. But what a great place it was!

They can start leaking after 6 months.
Many people transfer water into washed-out cola bottles, which last far longer than in the jugs. You have to add a small amount of pure bleach to disinfect, but I can’t remember how much. Google around for instructions.

6-8 drops Clorox per gallon. You should smell it. Let sit 24 hours. Rinse cap with it at first but wait 1 day to put it back on. Stay safe, diarrhea degrades your aim.

That description leads me to believe that it's probably a very peaceful place. Nice!

Imagine a flash-mob of 100 armed with guns.

Poor America.
You know, I would have kinda' thought this was fringe, nutcake stuff long ago.
But not that much anymore these days. Looking at other countries. Seeing Hollywood Blvd. the other night in LA. Knowing the power of Twitter to assemble large, anarchic entitled, pissed off Obamanastic crowds and illegales in a matter of minutes at one location...past US riots.....on and a on an on on and on...the beat dont stop till the break of dawn.....
At least to be prepared is to live in a better state of peace of mind, I will say that much.
Love your family, and protect them (and yourself), and have a plan folks. Then just live life, but you will know in the back of your mind you have some modicum of control over events.

At least someone who is thinking.
I get a kick outta these who buy into the food storage thing when you can go down and buy pasta, canned goods, rice etc and put them on the shelf. If one persists, they can get a shrink wrap machine and simply do the very thing the food storage people do. Or a food dehydrator.
