My opinion? Unless there’s a real threat to you, leaving your safe, stocked, defensible home, where you know your neighbors, where you have a job and means to support yourself in a complicated economic time, lets say its not the smartest thing to do.

Very true. I suppose the best plan is to first work off the stores that require...or required...refrigeration and then depend on the stores.

I’m glad I moved out to “the sticks” last year. Knowing your neighbors as well as having a ‘plan’ is invaluable during these times.
All that said, I don’t think we’re to the point where urban dwellers need to ditch everything and get out of dodge. I think any reasonable person would feel more comfortable in a more rural environment than downtown USA but that my $0.02.
One thing I think is important is to think of defense in a tiered approach. IMO, one needs some medium to long-range firearms and enough training/ammo to be effective. Having a little .22lr for small game and shotgun for fowl and HD isn’t a bad idea either.
How far away “out in the country”?....we have access to a place (orchards) we could head to....2 hours away, though....and driving freeways....hhmmmm.....maybe “camping” down by the creek in the woods within a mile of our little suburb would be better? (albeit less comfortable)
Honda 2000 is also very quiet. A few baffles and it would be noiseless. Don’t run it in your garage! CO

I agree with FerFal. Don’t even plan to leave your homes only because of the economic decline. Such action would leave you eventually starving, frozen, dead from heatstroke,... Be frugal, become more self-sufficient, and learn to do technical work (like fixing your vehicle for starters).

Ya, MAN! I drove down to Scottsdale from the Grand Canyon at night in a blizzard. Two eighteeen wheelers saved me probably from certain death. One got in front and one behind and took me all the way down. I have never been so scared in my life.
Hello and wow! I did speak with one of my sons today using the approach spoken here on the thread. To my amazement he mentioned he’s going to start buying extra food for storage! I mentioned what he felt people would do if things got really bad. He said he wasn’t thinking about getting a gun for nothing, and then elaborated on that. I asked if he thought we might bring this up with his brother as well. He thought next we meet there we should. So it’s at least on the table now and we’ll go from here.

Wow! You must have been at this for years! Impressive you are that independant. Thank God for the abilities you have to make this possible. But it must have cost you a mint to impliment all this. What would you say was your entire investment to secure yourself this way?

I also have fire retardant tarps.
There are some old strip mines a few miles from here where people dump old appliances, refridgerators, stoves, etc. Scavenge and get what you can to cover windows and vulnerable spots. (old oven doors, fridge doors, etc. Flat sections of heavy metal.) If you have a storage shed, keep stuff there until you need it. If you don’t have anywhere to store it, stack it and cover with tarp somewhere it isn’t unsightly.
Sounds crazy but it works. Firewalls from woodburners and fireplaces work too.

Somehow I missed your post last night. IMHO, anything less than an hour away isn’t “country.” Two hours out? Perfect. Just make sure you keep enough fuel available to get there. Or be willing and able to hike it.
PS A key is knowing early that the SHTF. Freeper land will let you know - either by posts or by its sudden conspicuous absence in a time of crisis.
We have a generator we used to use to run the well pump to fill storage tanks, before we got electricity. We are going to sell it if possible because the last thing in a SHTF situation is to advertise that we have juice, and thus other stuff. We don’t have enough $ or interest to do a huge solar array (or enough open space), nor any other method. Just living without much electric is our plan. I’ve lived without electricity for a number of years altogether. What I need to get is a laptop so I can run it off a battery.
The whole idea of bugging out sounds insane to me. People should prepare to stick it out where they live, and if they live in a big city or other dangerous place, they should have moved already, or tomorrow maybe. Living on the run or hiding in some hole is worse than insanity. IMHO of course.
