Do these stories happen every year? This was posted yesterday at the Daily Caller:
A California university says it was bad taste to serve chicken and waffles on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Officials at the University of California, Irvine, say the menu of stereotypical black food was served on Jan. 17 the first day of the schools annual Martin Luther King Jr. symposium.
The dining hall advertised the meal as an MLK Holiday Special.
The co-chairman of the schools Black Student Union and another student lodged formal complaints.
University spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon tells the Los Angeles Times that the cafeteria staff made a last-minute decision about the menu. She says the intention was to offer holiday comfort food. The company that runs the cafeteria says it will conduct cultural sensitivity training for its chefs and managers.
Last year, the NBC commissary at Rockefeller Center in New York featured this menu:
As somebody quipped on twitter back then, Im simultaneously offended and hungry.
Presumably they too had cultural sensitivity training in response. Is there a firm that first supplies these menus to cafeterias and then the requisite cultural sensitivity training afterwards? OK, I didnt think so, but why do these things keep happening amongst our enlightened betters in the media and academia?

While in culinary arts school we had to prepare meals for black history month. Of course the menu is going to reflect the black culture in America. What do they want us to serve to honor the subject? Tubers and antelope?
I think they have their squelch turned up too high and are getting feedback from themselves.
LOL! It’s sad, but funny.
We had an Indian dignitary come to our offices when I worked for a major financial organization back in the early 2000s. They were doing a meet-and-greet since we were outsourcing our IT stuff over there.
My manager was (still is) such a dolt that he scheduled a dinner at the swankiest STEAK HOUSE in the area.
Yup! That’s what I think too!
I know that!
But we’re talkin’ NEW YORK CITY, and NBC STUDIOS, AT THAT!............
It is no where near as bad as someone serving pizza to honor Italians. (Now that is a travesty) :)
LOL
This is probably an immaturity on my part,
but when I figure out that someone is going to get offended no matter what is said,
or that they are feigning offense in pursuit of another agenda,
I will intentionally offend.
But I’m just a “cracker”, I guess.
I don’t understand the hubbub. That NBC menu looks good.
That’s not just black food; it’s southern food.
“I’m offended by this menu! I demand you give me all the items on it for free!”
Anyone else notice that February, THE SHORTEST MONTH, was chosen for “Black History Month”?
What an OUTRAGE!
Actually it would be any meal....just send the bill to our children and their children.
Liberal: “I’m a vegan but I want to show my commitment to diversity by eating in this Soul Food restaurant. What do you have that I can eat?”
Waitress: “A napkin. Make sure it’s clean though”.
Well, I'm offended by black food too - it means they cooked it TOO DANG LONG!
Seriously, can we just get over the "black food" idea?
Can you give it a bloody rest?
The ONLY reason that it's "stereotypical" is because of stupid stories like this.
I eat fried chicken, I eat watermelon, and my mom tried real hard to get me to eat collard greens. I am not black and IT'S NOT BLACK FOOD!
Seems to me like the only reason the food is called "black food" is so somebody can FREAKIN' WHINE ABOUT IT.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the choice of food, but by the content of their character.
Collards seasoned with bacon fat - no other way.
Fried chicken and waffles....I’m telling you it is difficult to think up a tastier meal.
Anyone know of a Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in Houston?
Every other racial/ethnic group CELEBRATES with food associated with their backgrounds.
But if you suggest a food is associated with American Blacks you are racist.
Go figure.
Are they embarrassed of eating or something?
As somebody quipped on twitter back then, Im simultaneously offended and hungry.
BEST. TWITTER. EVER.
You said it Pappy!! Why, we have a freezer with several nice, meaty ham bones lying in wait for the next batch of collards.
