Roy Barnes Potty Plan for the Peach State

VILLA RICA, Ga. — Roy Barnes has a solution to the economic crisis in Georgia. According to his website (www.roy2010.com), one of his first acts as governor will be to "retrofit every state building and public school in Georgia for clean, efficient energy consumption - this includes the use of low-flow toilets and the expansion of our sewer systems where necessary. These projects will reduce the state's energy and water costs in the long run, while putting Georgians back to work right now."

Barnes apparently believes that a combination of savings from water conservation and government spending on potty programs will lead Georgia back to prosperity. What he does not explain is how the state will pay for its potty investment. Currently, the government of Georgia is so short of cash that it cannot pay teachers or keep state parks open.

And how much is this “retrofit” going to cost? and how many decades before it pays for itself? In reality would it, in fact, pay back its costs?

Get ready for more of those gov’t $600 commode seats.

Water costs the state nothing, it is a tax on consumers.

Water is a huge problem in Georgia, especially Atlanta. They have even contemplated trying to sue to sieze a portion of Tennessee to get more water (Something about a poorly drawn survey from the 1800s.) The State does pay a very large water bill, and these are practical changes to make. I’ve made similar changes in the office building I manage. But they are an expense that should be part of the normal maintenance budget complete with cost benefit analysis. It’s a dud as a campaign issue. The voters of Georgia don’t want to hear about more spending. They want to hear about cutting waste (the budget kind, not the bathroom kind).

I thought most of that water bill is penalties and fines.

Water is an issue for Atlanta - I heard a few years back that if they were to build reservoirs, they would pay for themselves in fines and fees within a year or two.

Translation:

Barnes wants a complete makeover for the governors mansion, especially the bathrooms.

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management is a hot mess. Home owners have been opening their mail and finding $5000 bills. It took me two years to convince the City what meter supplied my office building and get the right bill. I’ve never really had a problem with penalties but they are cracking down on inspection fees and such. In fact, the whole city government has slowed to a crawl except the revenue police. They have guys that just go from building to building making sure every company has a current business license and that it is properly posted.

I meant the city of Atlanta itself has huge fines and penalties (not the customers, although I’m sure these costs are passed along).

I hadn’t heard about stuff going on with the customers.

And isn’t there some mess with Lanier and the oyster beds in Alabama?

What a boondoggle.

I am very happy with my rural water company.

You’re right in that Barnes seems clueless as to what the average Joe wants to hear right now. “long term solutions” for Atlanta’s water woes sure don’t help in the short term, and don’t do much for the rest of the state.

It’s kind of like his “join Barne’s mailing list and get in the drawing for Ga. Tech football tickets” considering how many Bulldawg fans there are in this state! LOL

Water in Georgia is a VERY big mess. We recently had a terrible drought which brought a lot of problems to the front burner.

And isn’t there some mess with Lanier and the oyster beds in Alabama?

Lake Lanier supplies water to Georgia, Alabama and Florida. It is run by the Feds so the 3 states battle constantly over who gets what. The incident you refer to happened during the drought. Georgia wanted to slow the flow to keep the lake level up but Alabama said they needed a certain flow rate to get enough oxygen for oyster beds. There is also the charge that you can actually save more water by turning off your lights than using a low-flush toilets because a tremendous amount of water is used in the cooling towers of power plants. Supporters of the power plants call this a zero sum game because all of the water goes back into the air through evaporation but that doesn't do a thing for the lake. It's a terrible mess that shows no sign of improvement.

Atlanta should have been looking at building more reservoir capacity a decade ago and more so as to not be so dependent on the Corp of Engineers and their management of Lake Lanier / Buford Dam. Republicans need to get on the stick and lead on this issue.

See waste money (as well as give “stimulus” gifts to Unions) that will never or at best take years to recoup in “savings” through green-initiatives, and in a recession too..Can his opponent point this out (I don’t suspect Georgia is one of those states loaded with cash at the moment for pet projects like this..)! ?
