Why Michelle Obama Should Stay Out of Restaurants
The Stir ^ | September 15, 2010 | Julie Ryan Evans

Earlier this week, First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the National Restaurant Association with stern advice about the fare they should serve up -- less butter and cream, fewer fries.

“I’m not asking any of you to make drastic changes to every single one of your recipes or to totally change the way you do business,” she said. “But what I am asking is that you consider reformulating your menu in pragmatic and incremental ways to create healthier versions of the foods that we all love."

She also gave them advice on advertising.

“It’s not enough just to limit ads for foods that aren’t healthy," she said. "It’s also going to be critical to increase marketing for foods that are healthy."

A little bossy don't you think?

It's part of her ongoing mission to improve the nutrition of children in this country, which is admirable. She's brought a lot of awareness to the problem of school lunches and childhood obesity, and I am right there with her in the outrage about our nation's unhealthy eating habits.

But she should stay out of restaurants.

Restaurants are where we go to take a break, to celebrate special occasions and occasionally get some relief from cooking. They should be places to enjoy, those in which we do indulge sometimes. While I may never fry cheese in my own home, I might go wild and get my kids some while dining out some night. Big deal.

We don't rely on restaurants for our basic nutritional needs, rather they fill in here and their in our otherwise healthy diet.

If you do rely on restaurants to provide most of your meals then perhaps their menus could be problematic -- but that's an individual problem of eating out too often that individuals need to address, not one for restaurants to solve. Their job is to attract customers, after all.

And most restaurants have upped efforts to offer healthy fare. If you order right, you can go into most any restaurant in the country and get a healthy meal if you look for it ... if you order it. Just because the fries are more tempting to you than the cottage cheese shouldn't really be the problem of restaurants.

It's different in school cafeterias where our children eat regularly. Those choices should be regulated and as healthy we can make them, because, like at home, that fare is standard part of their diets.

Restaurant food doesnt' have to be, and when I do choose to dine out, if I want heavy cream in a dish, then I want heavy cream.

Do you think Michele Obama has any business telling restaurants what to do with theirs?

And just in case they aren't listening, there is a bill working through the legislature to COMPEL restaurants to do what they aren't smart enough to do when M0 "asks" they do it.

Hypocrisy, thy name is 0. The plentiful images of 0 and family yukking it up -- Spain, Martha's Vineyard, golf, etc., etc., etc.

0's arrogance -- "You'd think they'd be saying, 'Thank you.'"

That will come November 2.

Sure hope 0 remembers to say, 'You're welcome.'

If restaurants had to cater to PC menus so they would be cooking up some unattractive food. Then the public would have less to attract them to restaurant food. That would cause less money to go into the industry. Then there would be one more sector in the economy that had its money stream slowed down. That’s all the DemonRATs do: stifle the economy with taxes, regulations and encouraging lawyers file lawsuits against every aspect of a free society.

Who has the money to eat out at a restaurant in this economy?

This guy, for one.

Remember all of the outrage when the San Francisco McDonald's quit offering their dollar menu - because it meant that the homeless would starve.

The food on McDonald's dollar menu is not significantly different than the food that is served in federally subsidized school lunches.

Do you think for one sec Mrs. Buttinski WideAss would dare eat her weekly lobsters without a big tub of drawn butter.

I’m sorry Moochella, I can’t hear a word you’re saying because my mind is transfixed on your ginormous ass!

Note to self: Open the UNo restaurant and serve delicious, highly fattening food. Every time M opens her mouth about what restaurants should serve, actively advertise a special which presents the exact opposite and quote her. Should make VERY good money.

My experience with foods of all types is that there has been an attempt to reduce calories, fat, carbs, etc. by using laboratory created substances that are far different and basically experimental compared to the original, natural ingredients.

IMO This has cause more problems and outweighed what benefits they might derive. Quit messin with Mother nature!

There is a gov program that already limits purchases to only healthy foods it is called WIC - women-infants-children.

Only eggs, milk, cheese, certain cereals etc. No junk.

I hate to see Food Stamp people getting things I can’t buy - you know - fancy stuff - expensive non-nutritious stuff.

They could just make FS program mimic WIC.

The next restaurant where Mooschelle orders lobsters should serve them with no butter. Notice how I mentioned orders lobsters. I doubt she eats just one.

Where she order fries, they should bring her raw carrots.

*snicker*

One of my favorite restaurants in Hyde Park is Valois ("See Your Food") Cafeteria. I took a picture in Fall 2009 listing the President's "favorites":

Valois has an extensive homestyle menu with plenty of veggies (broccoli, green beans, etc.) available. The chicken pot pie is legendary. For Chicago, the prices are fair and the portions substantial. Dear Leader seems to have passed on the healthier menu options.

On the other hand, even Obama's picks are healthier than the nearby favorites: Harold's Chicken Shack (4 stars) and Ribs and Bibs (3 1/2 Stars, get extra bbq sauce).

If you ever have reason to be in Hyde Park, Valois is an excellent choice.

Yes! But they should cut them up in the shape of fries and put them a little cardboard container to keep the ethos.

“I’m not asking any of you to make drastic changes to every single one of your recipes or to totally change the way you do business,”

Not proposing, suggesting, implying, but asking, as if she had some sort of authority over their menus and businesses.

She's as narcissistic as her husband.
