A Civil Religion: Is Islam Un-American?

Build it or We'll Keeeeeel You!

Imam Ralph came right out and said it to Soledad O'Brien when she asked him about the possibility of moving the mosque site:
Rauf gave a reply that boils down to a threat. Rauf said that if his Cordoba House does not get built on his chosen site near Ground Zero, “The headlines in the Muslim world will be that Islam is under attack.”

As for the message Rauf’s words might impart to the many Americans who oppose his project, his warning doesn’t sound like bridge-building. It sounds like blackmail. (Forbes - Claudia Rosett)

Doctor Zudhi Jasser, Former Navy Lt Commander and founder of  American Islamic Forum for Democracy takes the opposing view:
But, I think what unites us is the freedoms and liberties our Constitution gives us..."  (CBS News)
A Civil Religion

Our founding fathers consciously chose to put no religion above another, but to instead foster a civil religion, in the spirit Jean Jaques Rousseau.  In his chapter on Civil Religion, Rousseau put all religions into one of three categories:
He praised the adherents of "Mahomet" for having crafted a religion of the second category, where there is no contradiction between political and religious morality.  How things have changed since 1762!  Muslims have burst the bounds of their own homogeneous societies and have now displaced Catholics as the disturbing influence pitting the pious against the state.

The philosopher also recognizes the salutary effects of personal morality on society: "it matters very much to the community that each citizen should have a religion."   And it's no business of the state "provided they are good citizens in this life."

The US Constitution:  A Civil Profession of Faith
There is therefore a purely civil profession of faith of which the Sovereign should fix the articles, not exactly as religious dogmas, but as social sentiments without which a man cannot be a good citizen or a faithful subject.
"tolerance should be given to all religions that tolerate others, so long as their dogmas contain nothing contrary to the duties of citizenship."

Theological Intolerance is Incompatible with a Free Society

This quote is best understood by imagining it coming from an intolerant religious bigot:
It is impossible to live at peace with those we regard as damned; to love them would be to hate God who punishes them: we positively must either reclaim or torment them.
Rousseau then explains why...
Wherever theological intolerance is admitted, it must inevitably have some civil effect; and as soon as it has such an effect, the Sovereign is no longer Sovereign even in the temporal sphere: thenceforce priests are the real masters, and kings only their ministers.
This is the standard to which we must hold every American.  Muslim, Christian, Atheist.  It matters not what your faith is, so long as it is compatible with our civil religion.

(Rousseau - Social Contract, Book IV, Chapter 8, Civil Religion)

There is no such thing as moderate Islam.

All knowingly subscribe to Sharia which is a pillar of their societal structure.

When the founding fathers thought of America, their little baby, the last thing they wanted was an invasive force to stifle, smother it, and then overwhelm it and kill it.

Most people do not recognize that what happens in a mosque is sedition. Pure and simple. Islam is not just a “religion”, it is a cult. Larger than that though, it is a political system, it is it’s own government, a economic system (which includes funding new mosque construction), its judicial...all wrapped up in the word sharia. This is inclusive of its military (jihadis) all rolled into one with one intent ...and that is to rule wherever they take root. It is a invasive, systemic infection looking to take over the host once it has quantum.

This is not just a “religion”, but something that cloaks itself in those terms so it should not be given the same treatment contemplated under the first amendment. The Korans Sharia rules are to consume whatever government there is wherever it goes.
Islam is political, and it’s goal is to supplant and replace. Globally.

When the founding fathers thought of America, their little baby, the last thing they wanted was an invasive force to stifle, smother it, and then overwhelm it and kill it.

The sooner America learns this , the better. Some know and many do not, but it is a threat to everything America knows.

Obama? Obama and Company? Should be tried for treason in this issue for promoting the establishment of a foreign government on our soils. He is doing nothing to protect America as per his oath. Also, as a Muslim, he knows this, he know far better, he knows sharia, but is looking to deceive America.

I prefer to use the term anti-American instead of un-American. Americans have the right to hate their own country, and every value it was founded on, and still remain Americans. If they take action to help our enemies in time of war, they are traitors and should be dead Americans.

Sorry but that makes absolutely no sense.

” Muslims have burst the bounds of their own homogeneous societies and have now displaced Catholics as the disturbing influence pitting the pious against the state.”

Well, not to some here at Free Republic. We will always be number one.

I guess the fish on Friday thing wasn’t the best plan of attack.

Fish on Friday is a good thing. I love fish and will use any excuse to eat it. One question though - does sushi qualify?

It makes sense because one of our values is freedom of thought. What you believe doesn’t strip you of your citizenship. You can be punished for actions against the county, but you are still an American. For example, Rev. Wright is clearly anti-American. He is still however an American.

Islam is basically a totalitarian system of laws and rules masquerading as a ‘religion’, which exempts it from too much scrutiny, especially by liberals. As such, it is directly in opposition to the values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights that codified those values. Islam is not compatible with western culture, in general and, in fact, does not seek to co-exist with any culture - but instead, seeks to conquer. Islam is a cancer on humanity.

I see your point in a legal sense but in my view he is Ameirican in name only.

I believe what makes America is the notion that there is a Creator, that our rights come from him, that the Constitution is the guarantor of those rights and it is the love of and abiding by that notion that makes one an American.

So if a person does not agree with and defend those values, how can he be an American?

"Is Islam Un-American?"

Yes.

To put it in graphical form, following is the American/un-American spectrum:

<-------------------------------------------------------------->

Apple pie.............................un-American..........................Islam

I agree with you, but why even get sidetracked in the whole "un-American" conundrum? It's much easier, effective and to the point to simply argue that someone is “anti-American”.

Is Islam Un-American?

Yes, even before we decide whether Islam is a religion entitled to 1st Amendment protection.

America is a nation of laws. Here is a moslem “leader”:

democracy is…forbidden for Muslims…democracy (is) incompatible with Islam because the Koran insisted Allah was the sole lawmaker… humans have no right to make laws.

Perhaps the ultimate question:

“How does America protect itself from a growing un-American group of voters that, if unchecked, will one day alter the Constitution to reflect its beliefs?”

(One can think of Marxists or Islam.)

Certainly the nation and our politicians must reclaim and reinforce our Judeo-Christian heritage.

Obama in Turkey 2009:
We no longer consider ourselves a Christian nation. - summarily discarding the time-honored belief that the U.S. is a nation of Judeo-Christian values.

That will take some time, however, given the leftists spread throughout the MSM, our educational system, the entertainment world etc., and the close to 100 out-of-the-closet socialists in our Congress and their leftist voting base.
