Education secretary calls for 12-hour school days, longer school years
The Daily Caller ^ | 07/28/2010 | Paul Conner

Posted on 07/27/2010 9:41:20 PM PDT by Brugmansian

“In all seriousness, I think schools should be open 12, 13, 14 hours a day, seven days a week, 11-12 months of the year,” Duncan said. “This is not just more of the same. There would be a whole variety of after-school programs. Obviously academics would be at the heart of that. But you top it off with dancing, art, drama, music, yearbook, robotics, activities for older siblings and parents, ESL classes.”

He continued by explaining that the American school calendar is antiquated and must be modified so that American students can compete at the highest levels internationally.

I hated every single minute of school. Hated is too weak a word.

I always remember a SHOE comic where Skyler, the eaglet, is asked, "Why do you hate school?".

He muses to himself, "I wouldn't say that I hate it. Let's just say that I dislike it with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns."

For my part, I was always an apple polisher. School was my milieu. Even so, I loved summer vacation.

His proposal doesn’t go far enough. We need to have children locked into two-man cells for 8 hours a day, then to a indoctrination center/school for 16 hours a day. The child should be RFID-chipped so we know their whereabouts at all times. They should have cameras observing their every action. These schools should get the child at the age of one day, then release them at the age of 18 to Work Units that are run much the same way. All clothing will be grey jumpsuits, of course, and food shall be of a miminalist nature — low calorie and bland. Upon a drone’s death, the body must be recycled into more nutrients to be reinjected into the system.

THIS WOULD BE UTOPIA!

They could provide all meals, all medical care, and all education. Perhaps the kids could visit their parents and siblings on alternate Thursdays for an hour or two.

While your proposal has merit, the inclusion of the modifier of any visitation shows that you need much more intensive 'schooling', Drone 1038020188.

This is right out of the Marxist play book as well.

You get the children away from home and the authority of there own parents, extended families, and church as much as possible.

The teachers are given higher authority than parents.

You deny families the time to go away together and strengthen family bonds.

The teachers are the mouthpieces for the STATE.

The teachers, through humanistic philosophy and Darwinianism attempt to destroy any faith in God.

The children are turned into STATISTS.

Their minds are effectively controlled.

This is exactly the way it has been handled in China for decades.

It is obvious that the average Chinese high school graduate has much higher math and physics skills than do average American high schoolers. But there are more important things for Americans than high math scores.

And with all the high math and physics scores, the Chinese have not come near the inventiveness and innovativeness of Americans. The Chinese use there "skills" stealing the inventions and innovation's of others.

I think schools should be open all year round too. Its dumb for those buildings to set empty half of the year still soaking up utilities and staff time keeping them up.

Doesn't mean though that kids needs to be in class any longer. You could teach twice the amount of stundets with the same real estate by having Winter and Summer sessions. OR offer advanced classes or adult education etc. in the Summer months.

My friend is a teacher and she sometimes is there for two or more hours after school is out. She DOES have a family. What’s she supposed to do raise other people’s children and never get to go home?

This is stupid. And how can there be ‘after school activities’ is they’re ‘in’ school for 12 hours? This guy should make up his mind. It’s either school or after school.

8am to 3pm is more than enough time for kids to learn if they want to learn and teachers want to teach.

I’m with you there. I got very good grades, but I hated school. Absolutely hated it. Then went to college and hated that. Probably why I didn’t make it to the second semester.

I say fire the Secretary of Education and close that very same department. I'm sure China could use a man of his tallents agenda.

Plus they are talking about serving dinner in the schools now. Free lunch and breakfast isn’t enough.

You know, a child cannot learn if he hasn’t been able to get a good night’s sleep. Each school should really have a safe dormitory for the kids to live in. Summer vacation is a waste of time too. Keep the kids in school so that indoctrination, I mean learning, never has to stop.

Labor is too long a time for a child to be away from the government’s loving eye while the child struggles down the birth canal. Why not just free public school c-sections in order to get the child into the school system hours sooner?

(Thank G-d for homeschooling.)

They should be a little more subtle; it’s all too obvious that they want to destroy the family unit.

It isn't the time spent, it's how it's spent. Quit putting rubbers on pickles and telling little boys an exit is an entrance, lay off the dirt-worship and social programming and get back to one prayer in the morning, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the three 'R's, and you'll have plenty of time left for more advanced courses in History, engineering, etc.

All in the normal school day.

No need to be paying the union overtime...and the kids can have a life, too.

I wonder if this would go over with most teachers like a lead balloon, anyhow. Many already complain about all the assignments they have to grade.

So true. Last year my daughter's school started at 7:50 and by lunch, 11:30, she had finished all of her main courses, maintaining a 95 plus overall average. After lunch was mostly fluff and band, which I didn't call fluff because she's a very talented oboe player, made Jr high all county in 5th grade. I think kids need good teachers and supportive parents, and more time in school is not going to change the teacher or the parent. And we actually like having her home and family time! She likes volleyball and softball and that's after school, not even a school sport at her age so extra school would leave no time for this. Unfortunately, there are parents that would love to have the school watch there kids 24/7 and that's sad. We also enjoy summer vacation, probably learns more at home in the summer because we actually take time to learn local history, explore science from an un-algore perspective and volunteer in the community.

Exactly, turn any job over to a non-union worker, and it will get done better, faster and cheaper.

1 to educate the kid, 3 to watch. Union Rules.

Sorry, Unions were great 50 years ago, but no government employee should be allowed to unionize. Never.

Heck, lets unionize the military. I’m sure the dems would be for that as well, and I’m sure a few of them have suggested it.

Get the unions out of my government.
