...lately, I have discovered that I, like the public at large, have been completely misinformed as to what really goes on when organs are donated.

Did you know that you can post more than 10 words from your blog?

Really. You can. Try it.

Unless you are a blog pimp.

You can mark the box indicating you want to be an organ donor, but it's your next of kin that actually has to authorize it. Now, the rules may change down the road, but that's the way it currently is now.

You can mark that box, but if your spouse, or parent or child can't bear the thought of it, it's all getting boxed up with you at the funeral home. ;)

We don't want no Argie parts anyway. Probably bunch of metric left hand thread stuff.

I`ve been told that while you are brain dead, they`ll keep you warm and ticking on life support and only finish you off by the actual removal of your organs, “you actually go” on the table by way of the surgical dissection of your body. Thats just a tad bit too gruesome for me.

This happened in our part of the state. Makes you think twice about checking the box.

I believe that if you do sign that box in your driver’s license application, your relatives won’t have much of a say.

This topic has been an issue with me for many years. I never have checked that little box and I never will. And when I had my will written, it specifies “no organ donations”.

Thank you.........nice to know I’m not the only one.

Not the most incisive or thought provoking piece I’ve ever read. What if they don’t see life and death the way they do? Maybe some evidence that they don’t and some examples would help before referring to the proverbial rub.

You could be right. But, whether Argie or not, wouldn’t you want control of your parts?

From my perspective, I’d rather have my relatives decide when and how to give my organs (even at the risk of them making a mistake and pulling the plug a bit too early) than total strangers...

... wouldn’t you want control of your parts?

I barely have control of all my parts now. When I die I even want my guitars, guns and Harleys to go to someone who can use em . If some child of my Heavenly Father can spend a few more years doing his work , it will be my last blessing to give him my gizzard or whatever is still working when I croak.

You are funny!!! But, in all seriousness, should you ever be (God forbid) in a vulnerable situation, and at the mercy of others, I truly hope you will have someone who sees you as a person and not as a “source” of organs.

You'll need to check with your state rules but in my state, my donor indication on my drivers license is not enough to authorize organ donation. My next of kind or whomever my medical power of attorney is would make that decision.

As a matter of fact, if I didn't want to be an organ donor, I'd have to go to even more legal paperwork lengths to prevent any of my family members from doing it anyway.

It won't matter much in the future anyway.

Under Obamacare the state owns your body, whether living or dead, concious or not, no matter ones cognitive abilities.

You will be evaluated by your "value" to society vs your costs to sustain.
