Cades Cove is a community frozen in time. Some of the log cabins and other buildings in Cades Cove were preserved and restored. These log and timber buildings now make Cades Cove a major draw in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. {30 vintage photographs}

My family bought property in CO about 50 years ago. It contained an old stage coach stop. No floor or roof. Four walls leaning every which way. We restored it and it looks a lot like the cabins in the pix. There’s actually about 10 other cabins just down the hill from us with a similar history and look.

Killing the rats that lived there was harder than the restoration. Log cabins are pretty simple.

I took my family through there in 2007 and made many stops throughout. Simply beautiful!

Thanks for posting. Very nice.

Although I've live in New York City my entire life, my late father was from an area near to the Smokeys. Whenever we visited our relatives there they would take us to see the park. He met my mom in Central Park (NYC) while on leave from the Navy.

:)

Thanks for posting. This is my part of the country.

I just heard as I was looking at the photos that the Cades Cove Loop Road is going to be closed for three months...
I didn't catch the dates though. That will kill tourism for a while.

The Rockies have their majesty, but the Smokies, their mystique... Lived in Knoxville and Sevierville, the foothills to the Smokies... try to get back there every year or so... the lives of the settlers there was hard, but I imagine was also filled with wonder at the beauty and “hiddenness” of their world.

This past June, on a month long driving trip through the lower third of the U.S., wifey and I drove one day from Franklin, NC up and through the national park, through Pigeon Fork (or whatever it’s called), Sevierville and on into Knoxville.......definitely the best and most scenic day of the entire trip.

FYI: Cades Cove Loop Rd will close March 1 for approximately 3 months. As much rain as we’ve had the last year, I’ll guarantee it will take longer than 3 months.
