Knock It Off, Free Republic!
XenoHistoran ^ | 12/1/09 | XenoHistorian

Posted on 12/02/2009 9:21:09 AM PST by pissant

I have been a minor participant at Free Republic, the Internet’s leading conservative forum, since September 2004. An online friend referred me to a discussion where members of Free Republic were talking about the 1952 and 1956 presidential elections, and using my maps from this page to make a point. I had to join FR to introduce myself to that group, and thank them for visiting. Because that was right after the “Rathergate” scandal, I thus became one of the “Pajamahadeen” that had just brought down the Sauronic eye of CBS.

Being a “Freeper” has been an interesting and fun experience, but I am disturbed by a current trend on those boards. For the past few weeks, at least since the latest fundraising drive ended, I have noticed that every new thread begins with a picture or video reminding us that Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate, supports abortion. It doesn’t matter what the topic is, the anti-Mitt material pops up.

Personally, I think our current priorities ought to be making sure President Obama and his leftist pals don’t force their health care plan down our throats, and defeating as many moonbats as possible in next year’s congressional and gubernatorial elections, especially Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd and Slobbering Barney Frank. Then in 2011 or 2012 we can fight over who we want for the presidency. Consequently, yesterday I posted the following on the Kentucky board:

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the Mitt Romney bashing that goes on at the beginning of each new thread? Granted, he may not be conservative enough for most of us (my first choice for 2012 would probably be Sarah Palin or Duncan Hunter), but he just HAS to be better than the Chicago mob that rules Washington now. Somebody ought to tell Jim Robinson that BHO and his cabal are the real enemy, not Mitt. Sheesh, an outside observer looking at us now is probably getting the impression that Republicans eat their own. And as for Mitt Romney being a Mormon, well, I’m more concerned about Harry Reid’s Mormon faith. Does he HAVE any?

Four replies have appeared since then, and only one agrees with me. The others just said we ought to do whatever we can to make Mitt Romney unelectable. I guess I’m going to take a timeout from Free Republic. Hopefully the Freepers will be acting more sensibly when I return. ’Bye, see you guys next year.

“We oppose Mitt the liberal because that is what he is. His being a Mormon has nothing to do with it.”

I wish that were true. Take a look at this current thread. Thankfully, most freepers don’t judge by religion alone, but plenty do.

Let me get this straight. Reagan signed pro-abort lgislation into law and then later said he made a mistake and had learned from it. But if anyone running against Palin has the same epiphany they are RINO’s that need to be run out of town on a rail?

I’m not defending Romney, just pointing out the inconsistencies.

“Not here at least.”

True. It was posted at his play pen, not here, but it was an Opus, and I saw it here thanks to Pissant.

I could not agree more. It is despicable, makes FR look like a real right wing hate site. I don’t think Mitt has ever killed a fly much less a baby. It is like they want to destroy everyone in the GOP except Sarah. Ridiculous, probably the same origin as the left’s diseased minds, definitely a mental disorder. I don’t care about Mitt’s religion. Freep mail me if you know any decent conservative sites that are not on steroids. I have not looked at many threads so as to avoid the pics. Do they really think this is doing anything positive?
FR is on a self destructive path. The kooks and TOTALLY INTOLERANT WIN. But what do they win? They make themselves feel powerful for a few days.

Actually that was not an “Opus” as he is only leaving until after the first of the year, which is only a month away. The whole thing to me was like Obama’s speech last night in that he is sending troops to Afghanistan but in 2011 he is going to bring them home. Either send them to win or get them out now. And here, either leave or stay. Jim is driving this bus and you can either ride with us or call a cab and go your own way.

Maybe wrong, but not liberal.

Romneycare was an attempt to avoid socialized medicine, and solve the problem of “free riders.” That was what Heritage and Romney were trying to do. Because of changes made by the Democrat legislature, it is probably more expensive than planned, but I think the overruns are exaggerated by some here. I’d like to see some reliable data, not data posted by anti-Romney folks.

But, in any event, to call it “socialized medicine” is completely dishonest. All insurance and care is through the private sector. It was an attempt to solve the problem of the uninsured showing up at emergency rooms and getting care ultimately paid for by you and me. The law won’t let the hospitals turn them away.

If Sarah Palin was a Mormon, she’d get the same treatment.

Speak for yourself. Refrain from insulting ME and many others here with such stupid charges.

However it is presented as PRESENT

No, it is not. As I recall, the video is clearly labelled as being from 2002.

Mitt NEVER said Peagan was “pro choice”.

Wrong

But, the most disingenuous claim Romney has made, and one that can be assessed for its truth, is his claim that he has grown in his abortion position just like Ronald Reagan did when Reagan was first confronted with the issue while Governor of California in 1967. Romney told Chris Wallace that as governor Reagan was "adamantly pro-choice," and that Reagan "became pro-life as he experienced life," and presumably as his governorship evolved.

So you don't even know what you are talking about in your attempt to defend Romney. What a shock.

Actually, I’ve gotten sick of the Romney bashing and the constant Romneycare stuff on just about every freakin’ thread. I get it. I really do. Can we move on now??

Mitt to his credit helped out Michelle Bachmann when the GOP cut off her money in the 2008 race because she stood up against Islam.

Mitt thinks spending some money is just as good as having principles. I disagree.

I also think we will have yet another swing in terms of personality ...I think Romney is just too slick ...a bit akin to Obama.
After Obama I think everyone will want someone a little more “real”again

Previously, these add-ons on threads were done during fundraisers.

In the 2nd quarter, it seemed every fundraiser add-on was an anti-Romney statement. That fundraiser seemed to go on forever.

In the 3rd quarter, it seemed there were very few if any attacks on Romney during the fundraiser. That fundraiser went really quickly.

Then, after the fundraising was over, the anti-Romney stuff started appearing, outside of the fundraiser.

This could just be coincidence, or it could be that someone figured out that attacking Romney non-stop wasn’t good for raising money.

I can’t imagine anyone wanting to contribute to a website the tries to make LIES TRUTH.

You say that and then you say this...Sarah Palin is allowed to totally screw up interviews and look like a dunce .... Her family is a mess.....I don’t like the huge DOUBLE STANDARD.

Why is truth repellent to you (and to Mitt)? He trashes Sarah just like you - except he does it through other means. He's a political snake.

Wow, I didn’t know that. He put his name behind it though.

When I was checking out 2008 candidates, I asked his campaign what his stance is and has been on abortion. I never received a reply. That was a big turnoff.

Reagan signed what was meant as very limited and targeted abortion legalization legislation for instances where the health of the mother was in danger. Doctors abused that provision, and Reagan learned from it and later said he regretted signing the legislation as a result.

Romney supported legal abortion demand - including minors being able to get an abortion without parental notification or consent - as he campaigned in 1994 and 2002.

If you can't grasp the difference, I can't help you.
