The average length of stay until expected release of parole violators that are recommitted with a new felony conviction is 36.71 months.[1]Ohio. Based upon this figure, the cost to incarcerate is $94,834 per recidivist in this demographic. The total incarceration cost alone for these recidivists is between $35.8 and $58.7 billion.

Can prisoner recidivism realistically be reduced to a figure below ten percent? It can’t happen overnight, but yes, it can. With state and federal budgets for departments of rehabilitation & corrections reaching incendiary levels, the need to implement new and innovative programs has become profound.

Most criminals cannot be rehabilitated.

Three strikes laws were supposed to put repeat offenders away for life, but liberals have managed to dilute the original law’s intent....as usual.

I favor cold cells, porridge three times a day, a window for entertainment. No TV. No Health care. No exercise room.

I favor prison sentences for 5 years or less. I favor death penalty for any crime in which a 5 year sentence would be considered inadequate.

I favor death penalty for anyone convicted of a crime after already serving two prison sentences. If they haven't learned the lesson, they cannot be taught.

Standard hug-a-thug nonsense. If these groups want to do something worthwhile, try to figure out ways to divert kids away from criminal activity BEFORE they go in the joint.

Crims were anti-social animals before they went in, they are super predators when they come out, in olympian athlete shape, and even more well versed in the judicial system. If they weren’t in a gang before they went in, they will be before they are done. The Nation of Islam has always been in prison and growing even more influential. They certainly have even more fodder than ever.

Too many well meaning bleeding hearts have tried to change them with no success. They try to get animals who would stab someone without a thought to control their base desires and become a productive member of society and they almost always fail.

If one turns their back on society, they should have absolutely no expectation that society will welcome them back.

Formula for successful aggressively managed probation:

ABSOLUTELY NO DRUGS
NO ASSOCIATION WITH ANYONE WITH CRIMINAL RECORD
JOB TRAINING AND FULL TIME WORK

Note: does not apply to NAMBLA supporting pedophiles, sociopaths, career criminals and other members of the Obama/democrat administration.

“I favor death penalty for anyone convicted of a crime after already serving two prison sentences. If they haven’t learned the lesson, they cannot be taught.”

Exactly! 90 percent of all violent crime is committed by 5 percent of the population.

Executing the career violent criminal would do wonders for prison overcrowding and save the taxpayers billions of dollars.

Maybe we should call it retroactive abortion instead of execution to get the “liberals” on board.

OK, can you enact these measures today? And a good caning for sentences under six months.

Your statement is mostly true. However, at the same time, we have allowed it to be abused very badly. i.e. 25 years for shoplifting, having a fist fight with your neighbor, etc.

Abusing it, devalues it, just like abusing the race does.

I'm leaning more, and more, towards ClearCaseGuy's "iron fist" proposal. ;)

Almost forgot one of my favorite rants. Prison Wardens. They are largely responsible for diluting prison sentences, as they feel that is the only behavioral tool they have at their disposal, and that's due to our "warm & fuzzy, soft & huggy, kissy feely, left wing dominated, Judicial system overall.

“You live in Saudi Arabia or what?”

Maybe he’s tired of living in a Country where criminality is rewarded. Tired of living in the Country with the dubious honor of having the largest percent of population behind bars, spending the most money on crime & justice, and the highest rate of recidivism in the civilized, free, world.

I am.

Nah. We’re wasting valuable human labor.

Let’s chain ‘em up and put ‘em to work. They could have dug the Big Dig in Boston mostly by hand. What the hell. It was good enough for the Panama Canal. Sure it’s slower, but infinitely cheaper.

Sort of a return to that quaint idea of having to pay a debt to society.

I wonder what the recidivism rate is among prisoners who serve the full mandatory sentence. Cities, like Philadelphia, never follow the mandatory sentencing guidelines for minority offenders. It’s called restorative justice.

Execution drops the redicivism rate to 0%.

For I have never seen anyone who received the death penalty ever be arrested for additional crimes.
