A beauty! I had a 68 Pontiac GTO triple gold, and a red 69 Olds 442 convertible. The GTO was an aberration, as it was faster than any of the others of the same year and model. Nobody knew why. I had a couple of friends who had good ones too. A Hemi Cuda, and a Plymouth Super Bird. That Cuda would sit at a stoplight, rumbling and shaking.....those were the days.

I heard a story many moons ago that it was not uncommon for Pontiac guys on the assembly line to slip in the oddball camshaft or a pair of thinner shim head gaskets to boost the compression on the random GTO passing by, your Triple-Gold Goat might have been one of those, they were all terrific cars!

My ‘66 Catalina had a pretty ‘box stock’ 389, but I goosed it up with the usual Edelbrock intake, Holley 780, 4-tube headers, etc. I tried running 4.10 gears on the street bu it was too much, so had to opt for a 3.55:1 gearset, even with that, the TH400 didn’t appreciate it, lol

Very possible. It was entirely stock. I never played with it like you did with the Catalina. I do know that it kept climbing after the needle was buried ;-)

Did that thing have the vaunted 421, mk?

Back in the mid-60s when I was knee high to a grasshopper I saw a copy of that car with the 421, just once. IIRC it was called a "2+2"?
Belonged to my (now deceased) sister's girlfriend's pa.

That car was single handedly responsible for firing my imagination in such a way I turned out a piston-head for the rest of my life. That'd be some time. LOL

Sounds like you got maybe a hotter cam or an extra large Rochester QuadraJet (aka 'QuadraBog', lol) carburetor, those carbs were maligned by many, but the secondaries were so large that you could drop a golf ball through them, they would flow massive amounts of air and fuel at full throttle.

GM-Rochester manufactured some sweet gear way back then, my Uncle located an original '64 Rochester fuel injection setup for the small block Chevrolet, got it rebuilt and recalibrated and it went into a '64 Corvette and that was my first introduction to 'old school' fuel injection and the acceleration was positively Old Testament Terrifying, in my not-so-humble-opinion, had never felt anything like it before, or since.

Y'know guys, in the day weren't those unusually fast but stock cars called, "freaks"? That's what the old man's Dart was, at least it was regarded so by the BB 396s, 350s, 383s etc I creamed. LOL
Ask "Dem Guard 'bout that Dart, he'd tell you.

No one could ever figure out why the thing was so damned fast, especially considering we were running it on regular pump gas. (~the old man...) LOL

Hello Brother Landru!

I regret to say my Catalina was only 389 powered, although I indeed lusted to find a 421 Super Duty, but to no avail.

I’ve always loved those 65/66/67 fastback full-size Pontiacs, they were the epitome of ‘sleek’, looked fast even when sitting still.

The slickest one I ever saw was a ‘65 (2+2 maybe?) Bonneville, the owner pulled out a dead 389 (they were notorious for munching themselves because they had only cast steel connecting rods, instead of forged steel), and in it’s place he somehow shoehorned in a 472 Cadillac and the torque was so massive that he had to install a more durable rear axle, I’m thinking it might have been a Dana 60, but not sure. I know one thing: he could have smoked the tires down to the rims if he had been so inclined, even the bone stock Caddy in that lighter Pontiac body would turn 14.0 in the quarter mile all day long without breaking a sweat, it was one powerful street beast.

LOL, you know Landru, your comment about pump gas reminded me of an incident that still gives me the sh*ts and grins even now, I was working in a Sunoco station in high school, and this was back when it was still fairly common to run 11 to 1 compression on the street, the gas was leaded, the sky was the limit. Anyway, we used to mix Sunoco 260 with Amoco Super Premium and that was one terrific street fuel if you were running a high compression engine. But what makes me laugh is remembering how this one local genius with a '67 Camaro, 327/365 was running 12 to 1 pop-up pistons and he wanted *maximum power* so he got the bright idea to add some aviation fuel from the local air park to that Sunoco 260 & Amoco Super-Premium mix. I remember when he pulled into the station one Friday evening, and he was all grins until he tried to shut the engine off and it just kept on running, and running, and running, it didn't stop until those TRW forged aluminum pistons began to melt and started to weld themselves to the cylinders, it was a case of 'too hot a fuel' for 'not enough engine' and while the mechanical mayhem was frightening to behold, it was still funny as hell although we dared not laugh ('cuz the car's owner was MUCH bigger than we were, lol).

Damn, I should be writing a book about this.

Yes it was called a "Super Duty", now I remember.
Probably a Bonneville too, the two models looking so familiar to a kid my years.

My "Uncle Joe" ) (really a cousin but much older than I, he attained "uncle" status instead) used to *love* Buicks. Had a '65 dark green Wildcat fastback, and man-oh-man could that thing scrrrrream!
Had to scream, those things weren't exactly lightweight. LOL

I drive a car now that straight out of Detroit turns 10:9 in the quarter at 131MPH. Even faster with drag radials. Scary fast, more car than I'll ever be driver, ain't that right, Braveman? :o) Best yet if ya don't put the spurs to it? 27-30 MPG highway, to boot. Better than a Camry, for chrissakes!! LOL

While the technology's made quantum leaps over the years, mk? The *thrill* remains the same. ;^)

OK, outa here to haul firewood 'lest I freeze my aging tush clean off. LOL

mk, meet "Dem Guard"...grew up with "Dem Guard". The crap he & I got into together are legion, make excellent chapters for [that] book you'd like to write. This is only one of those stories.

Anyway DG had a '57 MG, a real rattle trap but hey, it beat the hell outa walking. Of course we were always broke and DG's car, affectionatley called "Little Bear" by DG, 'tho only he knows why, was small & cheap to run. It was only a matter of coming up for $$ for gas.

It wasn't uncommon when we couldn't scrape together a few bucks for gas to pull up next to another car in some parking lot real close adjacent to *that* gas tank; and, since L'il Bear (& by extension, LB's gas tank) was so low?
Just run a hose from the higher car's tank to Li'l Bear's lower tank and voila'...*our* own personal "Gas Station".

Thing is, mk?
We knew damned well if we ever got caught they'd cut our nutz clean off; so, we were nothing if not overly cautious.

OK so one very broke night we're out looking for a victim, and everything that looked plausible [read: high enough relative to Li'l Bear] was also well lit. All except some dump trucks by a construction site. Admittedly a last choice, but WTH, thieves can't be choosers and since it was very dark? *Perfect*.

With lights out we pull up to the target truck with hose in hand, pop the cap off the truck's tank. Sniff it...look at one another, shrug, and say WTF it's either this or hoof. Proceed to pilfer 'til we were satisfied Li'l Bear had been fed enough to provide an evening's worth of running around. Thought best not to push our luck, thinking a cop could come along at anytime we folded up and pulled out.

Dem Guard starts L'il Bear and away we go, all's well.
Once on the road turn on the headlights, same ol' sequence and now feeling very smug about our larcenous ways begin to pat one another on the backs. Who says crime doesn't pay?

Then Li'l bear begins bucking like a wild horse. DG screams "LOOK AT THAT!", pointing to his rear-view mirror.
I turn around & in the headlights of the cars behind are *plumes* of diesel smoke.
My memory blanks-out after that, honest.

Care to finish the story, Dem Guard.
We all assume you had to drain the tank; but, did we ever make it home? LOLOL!!!

Absolutely. I remember that the major limiting factor so far as elapsed times (talking quarter mile NHRA racing now) was tire technology, you could slap a pair of M&H Racemasters on your car, sprinkle some Oxydol in the staging area and smoke 'em up a bit (the detergent would make everything a little 'stickier' for traction) and you could end up shaving 2 or more seconds off of your time with standard street tires. But on the street you couldn't run slicks (legally anyway lol) and you couldn't very well uncork the headers unless you really wanted to attract some attention. (I saw a few variations on the ol' lake pipes arrangement with block off plates but that was a lot o' work unless you were a real dedicated street racer.

This thread has really improved over the subject title, eh?

Oh I got some stories from what we called the 'LTSRA' (Little Tavern Street Racing Association) in suburban Montgomery County Maryland, there used to be an active (and somewhat responsible) street racing fraternity on the streets in that area, usually heading out to what we called the 'Rt 32 Drag-A-Way' (Maryland State Route 32 lol) or 'Zion Road' off of State Route 108, and there was always that strip of Viers Mill Road right there in Wheaton Maryland, from the top of the hill where the Hot Shoppes (Mariott) Drive In used to be, down to the merge with Georgia Avenue, there was a traffic light at the bottom of the hill at Little Tavern (burger joint, yum!) so when it hit 'green' it was almost as good as a Christmas tree at a legitimate NHRA-sanctioned racetrack, lol

And the cars, ohhhhh my the cars. I was in a FoMoCo product back then, a '63 Ford Galaxie (fastback of course) and as I like to say, Picard had the 'Stargazer' (as his original vessel), Kirk had the Enterprise, and yours truly had the 'Galaxie', :)

Oh, btw, that story about you and Dem Guard and the diesel fuel? LMAO! I can picture that, we had a guy named Lenny who used to talk about his own gas station "Lenny's Texaco" and we figured maybe his old man owned a station, and one night a couple guys and I were short of fuel funds, so we saw Lenny and said "Lenny? Take us to your Texaco man!" so he was happy to oblige, and we ended up behind the P.J. Nee furniture store on Rockville Pike and we said "what's this?" and Lenny said "it's my Texaco fuel depot" and he proceeded to start siphoning gas out of the big delivery truck tanks and we looked and saw one solitary gas pump with the 'Texaco' emblem on it, hence: "Lenny's Texaco".

We didn't patronize Lenny's Texaco after that, we were too afraid of ending up at the Seven Locks Motel (Montgomery County Jail lol).
