One of my favorite Backcountry Web sites is "Blind Pig and the Acorn," where I can listen to mountain music while reading about Appalachian folkways and folklore. Today on "Blind Pig," folk remedies for "What To Do For A Toothache." One of the remedies: "hold liquor in the mouth for several minutes - then swallow." Sounds like it's worth a shot. Or maybe a double shot. Heck, I could learn to like a toothache . . . .

Bourbon Ping!
I like home-remedies.
Calling Dr. Jim Beam!! He makes house calls!
It worked for me when nothing else would, including Lortabs.
My mom used to use that on us when we were kids.
Seriously.
I don’t think we got to swallow it though, and it was more like a teaspoon than a shot. But it does work.
Can you imagine a parent doing that today? They’d probably string you up!
Of course she served us coffee for breakfast too... :)
For non-recovering alcoholics, it’s perfectly reasonable to like a few drinks.
I always thought Anbesol tasted suspiciously like Laphroig Scotch.
For coughs, take a tablespoon of honey & a tablespoon of rye. It does work. For cuts that are slow to heal, put a drop of honey on it & cover with a bandaid. Works like a miracle. I can’t use Neosporin type creams so I started using honey instead. Heck, I had some poison ivy blisters that would NOT heal, kept honey slathered on the area for a couple of days & it didn’t even scar (& I scar easily).
Yep, my wife cut her gums on Old Fitz. Literally.
I always knew my Elijah is “good for what ails ya”, this just confirms it. But I’m not waiting for a toothache or something to take my dose...
Good looking site.
Take care.
Honey is an amazing natural antibiotic. It kills germs and it never goes bad. Honey has been found that was 2,000 yrs old and it was still good.
Honey is some amazing stuff. All of the bee by-products are - Bee Pollen, honey, Royal Jelly, honeycomb. All good and good for you. Just amazing.
Good for snake bits also.
Helps to have some in the system before getting bit.
No hunting camp after sunset should be without some.
Never know when you’ll be attacked on the way to the outhouse.
:-)
My mother was born in North Carolina, so it was honey and Bourbon.
I had a friend several years ago who developed a toothache on a Saturday and didn’t want to go look for emergency treatment. Someone told him about this little remedy and he decided to try it, even though he had a history of serious binge drinking. He went to the ABC store (liquor store in NC), bought a half gallon of Jim Beam and wasn’t seen for three days. When he finally came home his wife threw him out and the dentist wouldn’t treat him because he was still so drunk. As far as I know that was the last time he ever took a drink, for any reason.
The only thing that cures my headaches pronto is a shot of whisky.
My mother once related to me the story of her brother going the dentist; the dentist, as it turns out, was quite drunk.
In his unsteadiness, he drilled through my uncle's tongue.
Ouch.
Not sure if it was bourbon or rye, though.
“the ABC store (liquor store in NC)” - - when I was a lad growing up in NC, it was called the “package store.” Because, I think, the purchases were wrapped up to avoid “public display of ardent spirits” laws.
Of course, some folks (including various of my own kin) should avoid the Bourbon remedy and stick with less ardent treatments.
