9And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.

10And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.

11And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?

12But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

13But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Remember that little incident at Cana? He waited till everyone was drunk then brought forth the good stuff so they'd get really blitzed.

Jesus would probably pop into the pub for a cold one every once in a while with his friends. I think you'd like Him.

Ya know, some of us go and only have one drink while visiting friends or just relaxing.

It isn’t a sin to be at a bar!

Did the wedding feast at Cana teach us nothing? Jesus always exercised His distinctly American prohibitionist sensitivities.

Why don’t you just ask Him?

>> Not to befriend but to save.

I was under the impression that the terms were synonymous. Are we not saved by a personal relationship with Christ?

In either case, my answer to the initial question is an unequivocal “yes”. Christ would not participate in sinful activity, but the life of Christ is replete with examples of him seeking out sinners on their home turf.

So Jesus intended them to be “blitzed” while the Bible calls drunkenness a sin?

You have a really distorted view of the Savior.

“He waited till everyone was drunk then brought forth the good stuff so they’d get really blitzed.”

I suppose you are making a joke, but really, what he was teaching us was that if we give of ourselves and do something for others, we should do it in the very best way possible.

My Bible warns against the foolishness of drunkeness. I find no prohibition against the responsible use of alcohol. There is even an encouragement to take “A little wine for thy stomach’s sake...”

The question in my mind is whether such establishments of whatever sort existed 2000 years ago. We know that brothels existed even earlier because Rahab was a harlot. We have no record that Jesus ever went near a brothel. But pubs and bars are not necessarily brothels. My thinking is that pubs probably did exist. We have no record that He ever entered one, so I vote that it is highly unlikely.

Just an opinion, high possibility of being wrong.

"If the answer is “yes,” does that mean he’d spend most of his time at gay bars (and/or highway rest stops)?"

I might be taking a bit of liberty in speaking for the Boss, but ya, He would go where he thought the need was the greatest. Prolly hit a few brothels too, carrying the Holy Word.

It is those high minded people who give me a seat in some of the finest restaurants in town. Rather than wait an hour for a table in a main dining room, we will head for the bar and get better service in a shorter amount of time. You do not have to have an adult beverage while dining in the bar area.

What if Jesus came back to earth as that homeless guy that you saw last week at the interstate overpass?

One of the biggest complaints by the religious leaders of His time was that he ate and drank and spent time with sinners.

Exactly right. Jesus went to where the sinners were so that by his example, he could show them how to live and by his love he could heal and save them.

The San Hedron and their parties are not where Jesus sought to be, nor found himself comfortable. As Jesus entered Simon the Pharisee's home, no one including Simon himself offered to wash Jesus' feet as was the custom of the day.

In Luke 7:35-39 we read about the uninvited woman who entered Simon Pharises home and washed Jesus' feet with her tears and her hair, then annointed his feet with the alabaster oil she brought, which likely was all she had to offer. Simon is offended, commenting that if Jesus was a true prophet of God then he'd have known the type of woman was and that she was a sinner.

Clearly Jesus' reaction to the woman and what her act meant versus that of Simon tells us much about who he'd rather "hang around" with.

If God had a name, what would it be And would you call it to his face If you were faced with him in all his glory What would you ask if you had just one question?

What if God was one of us?

Just a slob like one of us?

Just a stranger on a bus trying to make his way home?

Joan Osborne - What if God was one of us?
