Valentinan III (reign 425-454) dramatically increased the tax burden on the shrinking empire making more provinces ally themselves with barbarian kingdoms.

He had a general Aetius that defeated Attila the Hun and ended his ravaging of the empire. For his efforts, Valentinian had Aetius murdered.
