As I predicted at the weekend, Barack Obama read the memo from the Brits and wheeled out the usual boiler plate about the Special Relationship at his all too brief press availability with Gordon Brown.
But there was a lacklustre quality to it all that did little to assuage the fears that he cares not two hoots for the niceties of it all.
I would have more insights on the mood and appearance of the president, but like the other DC based correspondents I was deemed surplus to requirements by the White House, who clearly had no intention of letting British and American journalists question the pair, as is customary, for 40 minutes or more. I'm not even sure the whole of the travelling lobby pack got in.
It is insulting and counter-productive to leave out the very people who cover him day to day. The White House contingent was also a small pool, rather than the full court press you would expect.
The always excellent Alex Massie sums it up thus: "Obama to World: Drop Dead!" My old boss Benedict Brogan, soon returning to Telegraph towers, aptly describes it all as a "shambles".
It will doubtless be seen as self-indulgent bleating by the media but there is much about this incident that is revealing about the way President Obama does business.
A Washington Post colleague just called me and said that the White House press corps cannot think of a single previous occasion when a British Prime Minister was treated in this way.
British Embassy staff, irritated themselves, had to twist Robert Gibbs' arm to get even two questions per side in a quick oval office doorstep. The press availability was initially going to be a 'pool spray' with softballs lobbed by the agencies. No10 and the embassy have

Who is going to ask the tough questions? No one who has access to Obama is going to ask a tough question. He ran scared of tough questions during the primary and the general election. Are some just now noticing? No wonder he has been getting away with it.
BaRack is a neoNationalSocalist, or neoNatSoc (say it fast)
Looks like the Brits have figured him out. Too bad our Establishment press corpse aren’t that smart? How they going to blame Bush for this?
Pray for America, Our Troops and Oblack’s Failure
I wrote to Obama asking if he intended to take-away TRICARE from retired military and dump us in rationed national healthcare. He did not respond. My contempt for the press whores who elected Obama and now protect him is off the scale.
Folks have been calling him a communist.
I don't really agree ... I think he's a fascist. Just a different part of the socialist "left". The part occupied by Hitler and Mussolini, rather than the part occupied by Stalin and Mao.
So ... calling him a National Socialist (Nazi, for short, in German) is not a meaningless swear word. It's an accurate assessment.
I have written to the creep 5 times. No response. He said that he is the president even for all those who didn’t vote for him. I told him that I am holding him to that, and gave him my opinions issue by issue based on his website. It was so long that I had to fax the letter.
He and his minions disgust me. I am with Rush.
And they thought W dissed the rest of the world!!! HA! HA!
And you assumed he meant US citizens?
It looks like most of the British comments are along the lines of: ‘Obama is too good for us Brits! Obama SHOULD spit on us!’
Can you imagine the press reports if GWB had acted this way towards ANY head of state? “The Chimp has pushed us closer to war with Outer Gambizia, when the formal state dinner used a red wine with a bit too much aftertaste!”
I keep waiting the hear the Prime Minister’s wife say something like, “After a lunch of arugula, Michelle called me a ‘honkey be-atch’, and told me to wash her plate or she’d beat up my husband in public...”
I'm not sure about that...a "national" socialist such as hitler or mussolini will rally the populace around a national identity and draw heavily upon unifying national/patriotic themes (i.e. Wagner's music in the case of hitler and classical Roman themes in the case of Mussolini). Nothing about the O speaks to American greatness and exceptionalism; quite the contrary.
He's just a plain old international communist, albeit a slickly packaged one.
Obviously Aexelrod, Raham, and Craig had prior engagements and were not available to assist Mr. Bama.
One of the bloggers at the site...(must be FReeper !)
....’Obama knows little, has done less, is already proving a monumental failure, can’t formulate a sentence and has a Humpty Dumpty ego’.....
You've a valid point there ... however, fascism was more than just the nationalist stuff. Its take on socialism saw the State as a "controlling partner" in all aspects of life, rather than an outright owner. Every bit as bad, but different. Zero fits that mold better than traditional socialism or communism. Perhaps he's best described as an Internationalist Fascist.
Either way, he's still part of the bloody-handed totalitarian Left that turned the XX Century into a nightmare of violence and oppression.
Well you do know some things will never get answered. Just like the BC issue is being ignored. What happened to the questions the press should be asking about earmarks and lobbyists in DC? The DBM is sucking up for more WH parties like X-42 had.

He is doing a great job! If you don't believe it, just ask him. He does not miss a chance to self-promote.
I like the comment that we must find a way to “Obama-proof” our investments. This POTUS, and those that he has surrounded himself will not miss a chance to maximize their agenda at every opportunity.
I listen to Talk Radio and hear people just like you and me calling in about their concerns. No, they are not missing the understanding of what is happening.
Then the network news comes on, and we hear the latest ‘propaganda’ news release from the liberals and I just want to vomit. There is little to no effort by those that call themselves journalists to reflect back onto the POTUS what he is doing.
Here is what will not surprise me.
The nation will reached such a point of crisis, that all investments become the property of the state. [That began with TARP, continues with the so-called earmark pocked stimulus bill, and will continue with the current congress.
First they will try to tax is out of our investments.
When that fails, they will try and seize investments. Shortly after a major terrorist attack, various aspects of martial law will be implemented not only to deprive citizens privacy “for the good of the state”, but also to maximize their hold on both the Executive Branch, supported by the Legislature.
I expect that Home Depot will be doing a lot of business selling large diameter PVC pipe with screw-in end caps so that folks will be able to go out and bury possessions, firearms, ammunition, gold and other precious metals.
Since this POTUS is on track to destroy our economy, what else can we do then to deprive him of that which he is trying to take from us. Everytime he speaks, the stock market goes down. This nation has lost about half of their national investment since his nomination seemed secure midway through last year. He seems focused on ruining us. I just have my pension now as security.
What happens if the POTUS says that "for the good of the state" further distribution by OPM will be lowered? Except for Congress Critters which will find someway to give themselves an out.
It may be time to go back to some old ways of bartering services for goods, and goods for services, to keep these transactions off of the record and away from being tied to currency and bank transactions.
Somehow, I expect the Amish are going to survive this one and "The One" quite well.
He can’t open himself up to unscripted questions and responses, including those in his staff because the responses are not his own...he is an idiot puppet - who are the real puppet masters?
