Cousin marriage laws outdated
Science Codex ^ | December 23, 2008

Laws banning marriage between first cousins are based on outdated assumptions about a high degree of genetic risk for offspring and should be repealed, according to a population genetics expert.

Not only that, but I think most of us will live to see legalized polygamy.

And also expect the age of CONSENT to become younger and younger to “stay up with the times”.

What’s the follow up article to this farce: farm animals can make good spouses?

Well, after all, it seems to be ok for homosexuals to marry, why not cousins … fathers and daughter (sons) mothers and sons (daughters), men and sheep, women and horses. Why should there be limits? God help us. ;-(

“Laws banning marriage between first cousins are based on outdated assumptions about a high degree of genetic risk for offspring and should be repealed, according to a population genetics expert.”

Actually, I think it’s more the reverse of that presumption.

I believe the idea of “genetic risk” was trotted out as a legitimate reason rather than just “eeewwwww”. Moral reasons, IOW.

People of olden times knew there wasn’t much more risk genetically if we can assume anything from their breeding practices of various animals. It’s well-known that many pedigreed animals long ago were inbred greatly. Virtually none of these “Deliverance” defects showed up then any more than now in those animals.

Basically it was just a matter of “morals” and the icky factor. Still is. Science (pseudo) was used as the veil to shield the real reason such laws were instituted.

Marrying a first cousin has been legal in most states for years.

Where I lived for a while in West Tennessee it was known as the divorce capital. A couple from Arkansas came over for a divorce and after the judge announced them divorced, the fella asks, “Judge, will she still be my sister?” :)/s

Polygamy is illegal in the United States. However, getting married to a cousin is not illegal in about 1/2 of the population of the United States. It varies according to the population of the states which allow it and those who don’t.

So, you’re talking about two different things here — one in which it’s already allowed, versus something which is not allowed.

You said — “Well, after all, it seems to be ok for homosexuals to marry, why not cousins … fathers and daughter (sons) mothers and sons (daughters), men and sheep, women and horses. Why should there be limits? God help us. ;-(”

Here is where people are “taking on an issue” that has *no moral prohibitions* against it — in the Bible. That’s why this should be a total “non-issue”. It’s already legal in about 1/2 of the population of the United States and has been that way from since the beginning of our country.

Now..., on those other matters — there are *moral prohibitions* against them from the *moral absolutes* in the Bible. That’s where we get our morals from — the Word of God, the Bible. That’s where we are able to say that no fathers and daughters, no mothers and sons, no homosexuals, no sheep, horses, etc — *all prohibited* in the Word of God.

But, cousins being married *are allowed* in the Bible and have *never* been, at any time, against the Word of God.

You shouldn’t mix up “moral absolutes” with some “cultural mores”... Stick to the moral absolutes of the Bible for a *solid foundation*....

When homosexual marriage becomes Federal law or gains a foothold in more states, I predict that polygamy will slide in the door right behind it. That’s all I meant.

I sure hope that people haven’t gotten so bad in the United States that they now pay no attention to the *moral absolutes* of the Bible and allow homosexual marriage to happen. If so, then this adds to the list of things that God will judge this nation for — and I’m sure that is coming in the not too distant future, if not already happening now...

And yes, if that does happen, polygamy will probably come along, too...
