This is FASCINATING — gun sales increase could predict Obama defeat
HillBuzz ^ | October 29, 2008

We’re utterly fascinated by this.

In 2004, we don’t remember hearing about anyone scared Kerry was going to take their guns away - and we worked Pennsylvania for Kerry (Pittsburgh area). There were a lot of gun shops and firing ranges there, and we never heard anything about people stocking up on guns because they were scared Kerry was going to try to take them away.

Obama is perceived as more liberal than Kerry, and in fact the most liberal Democrat that’s run for president in as long as anyone can remember. Biden as VP makes this the most liberal ticket that Democrats have ever fielded. There is nothing about it that puts the bitter, gun-and-relgion-people-who-are-apathetic-to-those-not-like-them living in Pennsylvania at ease.

Absolutely nothing.

In fact, the thought of Obama becoming president freaks these people out. So much so that they’re stocking up on firearms.

We just don’t see how this can bode well for Obama. These are “Reagan Democrats” and Republicans. They’re Clinton Democrats too. And they recoil at the thought of an Obama administration.

Have you ever heard of anything like this? We checked, and can’t see any evidence of this in past elections — where the Democrat so freaked rural, working class, sportsman types out that they felt compelled to stock up on weapons to protect themselves.

We think this is a piece of a larger puzzle…one that’s becoming much more clear as we inch closer to November 4th:

(1) Democrats like us at HillBuzz are working with Republicans for the first time in our lives to elect John McCain/Sarah Palin because we do not like or trust Obama/Biden.

(2) Hillary Democrats not openly working for McCain are silently voting for him — and voting Republican for the first time in their lives in most cases.

(3) Early voting has not met Obama’s expectations — Republicans are tied or ahead in most states, and nowhere is Obama enjoying blowout advantages he claimed he’d have.

(4) In all states, there is a marked “enthusiasm gap” between support for Obama and support remembered for Kerry in 2004 or Gore in 2000…lack of yard signs, stickers, posters, and excitement to vote for Obama, despite what the media claims.

(5) Gun owners afraid of Obama, and stocking up on weapons because they are that freaked out by the thought of anyone voting for him.

We’d love your thoughts on that last one, as we think it could be a cultural barometer like the Family Circle cookie baking contest or Halloween mask sales — something that shows a large scale cultural like or dislike of a candidate.

All of these anecdotal signs point to a McCain win…with those gun sales being the most fascinating of all.

Because those gun owners are the heart of the country. If Obama hasn’t won them over, and instead seems to have driven them away, screaming, then we just don’t see how he wins.

Yes - the last several Presidential elections. If the author can't find evidence of this happening before, he isn't looking hard enough. Given a comment elsewhere in the article, he wasn't on the concerned side, and thus unaware of the degree of stocking up going on then. Heck, I got my first AR before Clinton precisely because I expected such bans.

Gun Sales Shoot Through the Roof Despite Bad Economy

Channel 2 News

Not all business is slow right now. In fact, gun sales are up 10% nationwide.

Some Reno firearms instructors say even people who never thought they’d hold a gun are now signing up for their concealed weapons training classes.

Many people fear that if Barack Obama wins the presidential race, he may do what Bill Clinton tried to do and ban semi-automatic rifles.

The Gun Trader in Reno used to sell two or three assault rifles a week - now two or three a day. “You don’t know what’s gonna happen in the future. Probably not a bad time to buy,” says buyer Art Verling.

Obama says he believes in people’s right to bear arms, but Democrats historically try to enact gun controls.

Meanwhile, people in Washoe County are looking for more protection since police say break-ins and robberies are on the rise.

And with break-ins and robberies on the rise in Washoe County, people also want protection now more than ever.

Florida Gun Sales up Because of Fear of an Obama Presidency
Posted on October 29, 2008 by Mr Pink Eyes

Florida residents, who understand that Barack Obama is against the second amendment, are buying guns before it becomes a crime under an Obama administration.

Here is where he stands on the second amendment:

* As a state legislator in Illinois, Obama supported banning the sale or transfer of all forms of semi-automatic firearms, increasing state restrictions on the purchase and possession of firearms
* He supported a “ban” on the sale and possession of handguns on a political questionnaire
* As state senator, he voted against a 2004 measure that allowed self-defense as an affirmative defense to those charged with violating local laws making it otherwise unlawful for such persons to possess firearms.
* He voted against allowing persons who had obtained domestic violence protective orders to carry handguns for their protection.
* Obama has also stated his opposition to allowing citizens to carry concealed guns and supports a national law outlawing the practice

Is it any wonder people are buying guns now before Barack Obama becomes president?

The point of bringing up Shay’s is that kind of hostility toward the citizenry breeds and feeds unrest. If what I think I see happening is part of some grand design, rather than just sheer stupidity, we’re going to be in for turbulent times the likes of which we have not seen since the civil war.

I agree. You put it very well.

Somebody didn't do their research and has a lax memory. I looked at 46 posts on this thread before I start writing this. How about the off year election in 1994? When the Clinton's passed that draconian gun control AWB/magazine ban? What was the bloody result? The Rats out on their A$$E$ after ruling Congress for 40+ years. Go back further. The 2000 election. Gore loses his HOME STATE of Tennessee which hasn't happened in perhaps a century. Even Peanut Jimmy got Georgia in 1980. Gore also loses West-By-God Virginia which hadn't gone Republican in ten cycles minimum. But the first day of deer season is a school holidy in WV. Why? Simple. All those workin' class folks suddenly were faced with the reality that indeed the Rats rhetoric might be (as the Not-so Reverend Not-so Wright would put it) COMMIN' HOME TO ROOOOOOST! Later even Bill Clinton would acknowledge on a variety of news interviews that the NRA beat Gore. Later he would admit that the RATs lost control of Congress over gun control and more importantly over their 10 yr ban. Liberals are idiots. Like lemmings over the cliff, I think it's in their DNA to suicide over the issue of the 2nd Amendment. Folks, it's about to happen again.

I’d like to avoid a repeat of 1860 if at all possible.

Well, I think something's coming around. Civil War in 1860, civil unrest of the 1920's, civil unrest of the 60's and early 70's(Weather Underground, anyone?)...we could be due.

Not likely 1860 more like Northern Ireland or possibly Argentina under Pinochet. Racial violence possible use of regular troops to enforce political proclamations from Washington D.C. or guerilla warfare complete with Federal LEO death squads.

I’ve thought from the beginning this was a manufactured economic crisis. They wanted to do that $700 billion under Bush so they could blame that on him.

I’ve heard it said in the media that the Republicans just nationalized the banks etc. so why talk about Obama wanting to re-distribute wealth.

Lord only knows that Bush has a hard time vetoing any spending bills.

Hate to say this, but don't expect much from the PUMAs.

These are people that identify themselves by ideology. They may hate Obama, but that doesn't mean they will vote for McCain.

The sad fact is the polls are probably closer to be right than not. Most people HATE Bush so much, they will vote for anyone not associated with him. And that includes some ex Army guys I see at the range often.

I suppose I don’t really understand your point, as I don’t understand what Bush not being able to find his veto pen for 6 years has to do with the economic crisis or anything with what they’re doing with the banks.

I’m not a Bush sympathizer, if that’s what you think. If you do, I’m not sure where you got it from. I’m a fiscal conservative, Milton Friedman style, and Bush has disappointed me in his lack of leadership in cleaning up our fiscal house when we had the chance and rubberstamping massive federal spending on a bunch of wasteful stuff. Bush is, however, on his way out and could hardly be relevent to what is about to take place.

Obama, on the other hand, is completely relevent as a possible future, and we’ve been down the big government, welfare state, spread the wealth around road before. He represents nothing new. Anyone who lived though the late 60s and 70s can attest to that and undertsands that it took Ronald Reagan and Volker, and a lot of economic pain to clean up the cumulative mess from LBJ, Nixon, Ford and Carter. And, they didn’t do it by making government bigger.

There is absolutely no way this crisis could have been manufactured. It is too large and has too many dependencies for it to have been planned and triggered at just the right time. It is a complete myth that it happened because of widespread deregulation, or that the markets were running wild with greed. If everyone was getting a mortgage by just breathing, the housing bubble would not have responded to rising interest rates pricing people out of the market and cooling demand like it most certainly did.

At the heart of it, however, is the redistribtive idea that the government could get something for nothing by setting up quasi-government entities, exempting them from having to follow the same mortgage rules as the private market, bundling the risk up in diversified, unreglated exotic securities to keep it off the government’s books and getting private investors to bite on them instead by implying a guarantee that never existed. It essentially ripped off investors to get what it wanted.

Nothing stirs markets more than uncertainty and since financial institutions, especially investment banks were holding these securities, they were ditched like yesterday’s dirty diapers. Hence, financial system collapse.

The housing bubble is a side issue and would have happened anyway. Its bursting, in itself, would not have caused the collapse.
