Early Obama buyer's remorse in FL

Posted on 10/24/2008 11:27:52 PM PDT by WestFlorida

My wife, five kids and I live in St. Petersburg FL, which, outside of southeast FL is the most liberal part of the state. So I wasn't too surprised when 3 neighbors went out and got 0bama signs after I put my McCain sign out. They are all teacher's union/tree hugger types, so no big deal. Then I see the tree hugger talking to a sweet little old lady across the street from us, we call her Miss Mary. She's 94 years old and has taken a liking to our family since we moved in a couple of years ago.

Anyway, shortly after he leaves I see a "Change" sign in her yard. We were a little surprised and disappointed, but didn't make a big deal about it. About a week later my son and I are playing catch in the front yard and she comes over to me. Her sign is gone. She says "I know you guys saw my 0bama sign, but I talked to my son and am voting for McCain now. I wasn't even going to vote initially, because I just don't keep up with the news as much as I should." So I got her an absentee ballot form and talked to her about some of the issues for a while.

My final point is that I think their are a LOT of Miss Mary's out there and they are going to start changing their minds over the next few days. We have to remember not everyone takes politics as serious as we do; we HAVE to talk to our friends and neighbors and not take anything for granted. We get no help from the leftstream media so it is up to us to spread the truth.

Incidentally, early voting here including absentee requests still favors us by about 55k, assuming Reps vote McCain and Dems vote 0bama. This is good because Kerry outnumbered Bush in early voting/absentee in 2004. Still a week to go, though. And another one took down an 0bama sign also, only about a week after they put it up! This one I think got talked into putting it up by one of their thugs who was walking our neighborhood.

perhaps not too pleased at the prospect of me going to Texas and showing up on her doorstep for free room and board.

LOL! Now that's a good strategy for changing her mind!

Great Story, T Lady.

May I suggest you call all of your friends who work for small businesses, and have them say the same thing to their friends, relatives, and acquaintances?

And point out that the layoffs will be "just money" and NOT racism!

Leftists call the effort by young Jews from New York to Obama-ize their elderly relatives in Florida "The Great Schlep".

Can we come up with a name for your effort?

...also, it might be good to point out the cost TO THE EMPLOYER of each worker. It is not just *your* take-home pay, you know; but

No, I don't own a small business, nor work for one. But my boss's husband at my Evil Large CorporationTM owns one on the side.

Cheers!

We know how liberals are like. They will increase taxes everwhere, while giving freebies with another. They will give $1, while they take $2 elsewhere. Utilities bills will certainly go up (for good green causes they say) hurting the poor the most

Don’t even count out Minnesota. The Iron Range is very much Union and live and breath it.

They are really upset at the recent Democrat coup of the “Secret Ballot” voting initiative. Now every Union member and Union boss will see just who is voting for who, which will allow them to harass and punish any member not voting the way they say they should.

Second, they are also not real excited about voting for a Black Chicago Lawyer. Or a Socialist, because they know that will be bad for free markets. Several pundits also are worried that Obama will have real trouble getting the Iron Range, a traditional Democrat powerhouse in Minnesota, to vote for Obama. They just do not trust him, and they know it.

My neighbor is also a life-long Democrat and he says that for the first time in his life, he is voting for a Republican, McCain, and for Norm Coleman. He says; “There is NO DAMNED WAY I’ll vote for a Communist, who will ruin this country!”

This gives me a real lift to hear this.

Glad to hear that she realized supporting Obama was a bad idea BEFORE she voted. I wonder how many will vote for him, then kick themselves after the first scandal hits.

Here’s the best story I’ve heard so far. Yesterday on Todd Schnitt’s show (if you live in St. Pete, he follows Rush) a businessman called in.

He owns a business in Clearwater, employs 13 people (IIRC) and grosses about 3 mil. But under Corp S filing (as with a lot of small business people,) he will fall into the over 250,000 group when he files taxes, and thus qualify for Obama’s tax raise.

He said this year had been very lean compared to last year, and his profit margin was only running around 4%.

He had been hearing his employees discussing Obama and I guess praising an Obama Presidency. So he called all his people together and gave them a little economics lesson.

He told them the dynamics of his profit this year, and said if Obama is elected, he’ll raise my taxes (x amount) and that will cut into my profit by (such and such.)

Then his final statement: I’m not telling you who to vote for, but I just want you to know, up front, that if Obama’s elected and enacts the tax cuts he’s talking about, at least one of you, and possibly two, will lose their job.

He said after that his people were very interested in the “economics” of his business and were asking questions. If more small business owners would do this type of thing for their employees, I’m sure it would have an impact.

Great post! Yes we can make a difference, not by being obnoxious and in your face, but by talking nicely about the issues to our friends and neighbors. Building on personal relationships where trust already exists is a great way to share information.

Although Miss Mary may have taken a liking to your family, your family no doubt has been a blessing to her. Thank you for taking time out of your day to help her vote and for looking after her. God bless you!

She seemed to calm down quite a bit after wards, perhaps not too pleased at the prospect of me going to Texas and showing up on her doorstep for free room and board.

It is amazing how practical information always trumps ideology! God bless you and your family, including your mom!

These people will STILL vote for Obama whether they lose their jobs or not because they hate THE MAN!

Obama will not win. He’s getting only 80% of the Dem base, while Gore got 92% and Kerry got 89%, and both lost. People crossing party lines to vote are Dems voting McCain, not the other way around (with the exception of Powell and David Brooks). Obama is done. McCain wins 54-46.

I think most importantly, is to check where your elderly parents are getting their “news” from. We had to convince my father-in-law to stop watching CBS - that was all it took.

"my step daughter still plans to vote for Obama.Very stubborn"

Not much you can do. Try:

* The old example of the four fellows going out to dinner, each representing a quartile of America. It's an expensive bill ($100) and they decide to split the tab. One suggests splitting it the way taxes are paid in America. So the richest fellow pays 90%, the next two fellows pay 5%, and the last fellow pays nothing. As they lay their money out on the table, three of them turn to the richest and say, "You cheap miser!" Why aren't you paying your fair share!"

And if you believe Obama, the rich fellow should also give the other fellows $5 each.

Makes Obama's argument a little hollow doesn't it?

WSJ source article:

Yes, the WSJ had an Editorial a couple of days ago highlighting the fact that the "top 1% of taxpayers, those who earn above $388,806, paid 40% of all income taxes in 2006, the highest share in at least 40 years. The top 10% in income, those earning more than $108,904, paid 71%. Barack Obama says he's going to cut taxes for those at the bottom, but that's also going to be a challenge because Americans with an income below the median paid a record low 2.9% of all income taxes, while the top 50% paid 97.1%. Perhaps he thinks half the country should pay all the taxes to support the other half."

“I am dirt poor and rely on welfare because I’m disabled”

I sent up a prayer for you.

With relatives who are also disabled, and the returning injured vets in the same boat, I believe there will be an effort to ‘help the disabled’ make the ‘right decision’ after the abortion legislation is nailed shut. THere are articles about this in Europe and Oregon right now. This terrifies me. Absolutely terrifies me.

Last night I told my elderly mother to stop watching the news period and that includes Fox. Alan Colmes has her in a tizzy every night.
I told her you have done your part, you’ve already voted, now it’s in God’s hands.

As an aside, our neighbor who is a registered dem asked us to get her a McCain sign which is now in her yard. I was surprised. She’s originally from PA and always has been a big dem supporter.

'Did you ask or do you know why your mother *is* going to vote for him? That’s the thing with too many people. They don’t think about the country as a whole. They only think about what’s in it for themselves. Don’t know if that’s your mom or not but I know it is for far too many. I am dirt poor and rely on welfare because I’m disabled. An Obama win would be more likely to help my life but it’s not about me. It’s about the whole United States.'

She's already voted for him, and sadly like most people she watches the news on television (CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC), and think about what's in it for themselves. As much as I don't like to think of her in that light, since she has been a wonderful mother to me (she's my step mom but practically raised me since my parents were divorced before I turned 3) that is how she views things.

This is one of the reasons I so despise the MSM.

...And as for your situation, please don't feel bad. I have always realized there are people among us (my only brother included who is also disabled with a hearing and speech impediment from birth) who will need the help; it's the able bodied individuals who deliberately take advantage of the system that should be forced off their butts and off the rolls.
