Why Leftie Obama Is Right Handed When He Eats
The Stiletto Blog ^ | July 7, 2008 | The Stiletto

Posted on 07/07/2008 9:24:44 AM PDT by theothercheek

When The Stiletto was but a little penknife, a family member who was a young child during WWII recounted how easily the locals could pick out American spies: When an Americans eats, (s)he holds the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hands while cutting food, then puts the knife down and switches the fork to the right hand and eats with the tines facing up. Europeans keep the fork in their left hands - with the tines facing down - and push food onto the fork with a knife that is kept in the right hand.

Not yet knowing what she wanted to be when she grew up - and not wanting to preclude herself from spycraft because of how she wielded her fork and knife - The Stiletto immediately began practicing the European style of utensil handling, and in the process discovered she is ambidextrous.

This blast from The Stiletto's past was provoked by an article in The Washington Post that notes an odd fact: Five of our seven most recent presidents - and both 2008 contenders – were born lefties.

But this section on how Obama eats was revealing, because while the candidate assiduously avoids discussing his upbringing in Indonesia it offers some evidence he was raised in accordance with the Hadith - the Prophet Mohammad's commentary on, and interpretation of, the Koran:

In Indonesia, where Obama spent four years as a child, travel guides warn visitors not to use their left hands (it's considered rude), particularly when touching food or drink. This might explain why the candidate uses his right hand to eat finger food but his left to eat with utensils.
Um, not quite. The Hadith - as much a how-to manual for daily life as an exhortation to wage jihad against infidels until they convert - instructs the faithful that the left hand is to be reserved for "unclean" tasks such as cleansing after excretion, because Mohammad believed Satan to be left-handed. Thus, no Muslim would ever use the left hand both to wipe (or otherwise clean) his or her ass and to eat, especially as in many Muslim countries food is often eaten by hand - a lavash-style bread is used to scoop up a stew-like main dish set in the middle of the table for everyone to share.

While it may well be considered “rude” to contaminate a communal bowl or platter by using your left hand to eat from it, as Muslims Indonesians also consider it blasphemous because Mohammad instructs it is haram (forbidden).

This article was written by Melissa Roth, author of The Left Stuff: How the Left-Handed Have Survived and Thrived in a Right-Handed World - who presumably should know why Muslims never eat with their left hands. So either she deliberately omitted the information about it being haram, or the WaPo staffer who edited her piece excised it. Which is as revealing as which hand Obama uses when he eats finger food.

BTW: Muslims consider dogs “unclean” and profess to be “insulted” at the mere sight of one – even a photograph, if this account from the UK is to be believed. As it happens, the Obamas do not own a dog – the McCains own 24 pets, including four dogs - but the presumptive Dem nominee has let it be known that he promised daughters Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, a dog after the election, explaining that they hadn’t had a dog before “because of allergies” (it is unclear which member of the Obama household has the hypersensitivity to canines). Hmmm. A suspicious person might wonder whether Obama’s sudden interest in dogs is kinda sorta like Gov. Charlie Christ’s (R-FL) sudden interest in getting married. Good thing The Stiletto is not a suspicious person.

You should never use the left hand to give or receive anything for the same reason.

What if your right arm was amputated?

Well, remember that Obama was raised by his white grandparents in HI so he would have learned the American expressions for these things. However, for a born leftie to switch hands to eat finger food - and only finger food - that is very suggestive.

LOL! And what about: Would you like an extra helping of collards? (Down south, they are sauteed in bacon grease and garnished with bacon).

Hmmmm.... Had never quite thought about it before but, as a natural right-hander, I use my left to hold the fork and to eat my steak. The right hand always operates the knife.

I guess you would be expected to eat with your feet? Not being Muslim I have no idea what Mohammad would order you to do - but since Muslims wash their feet five time a day before prayer I suppose they should be clean enough to eat with.

But then, Muslims could also wash their hands after using the bathroom so even the left hand should be clean enough to eat with too.

Very confusing ...

It makes it harder to tell fish stories.

I can tell you that this “leftie” grabs the dinner roll with the right hand because the fork is in my left. Might be poor table manners, but there it is.

Again, I’m not sure that this is suggestive of Obama’s religious upbringing. It just might be the way he observed family members doing it(his G-parents, most likely).

This whole issue as to whether Obama was raised a Muslim kinda misses the point. His father was Muslim. As I understand it, he is considered to be a Muslim under Islamic Law regardless how he was raised.

So I’m not sure where this all leaves us. And I really don’t care since I’m not voting for the guy.

It’s not the religion per se (religion is imposed on you as a child by dint of the family you are born into and if you’re lucky you believe that particular brand of dogma and if not you switch to something else or atheism). It’s the cover up. Why can’t he just say something simple like:

“My father and stepfather were Muslim. My stepfather raised me as a Muslim while I was a child in Indonesia, but my grandparents did not insist I follow any particular religion when they raised me in Hawaii. So I drifted spiritually until Rev. Jeremiah Wright brought me to Christ. Yes, I was raised a Muslim during part of my childhood, but I am a committed Christian now.”

Why is this so hard for him to say?

Another question: What if both your arms were amputated? How would you eat or do anything in America or Europe or Asia or anywhere? I was acquainted once with a person in that condition and he used his feet. He was very supple. Amazing to see him do things like that.

there was a reason Americans went through this elaborate rearrangement of silverware with every bite.

Interesting. Thanks.

You’re welcome.

I do find the European style of eating much less intrusive on the meal!

I know of many older left handed Americans who do a lot with their right hand-comes from either being forced to use their right hand or living in a right-handed world with right-handed utensils. Scissors, for one. Even our can opener - if my left handed father had used it as a leftie, he would have had it upside down.

My father was left handed and red-headed. People in this country regarded those two things as Devil Spawn, lol. There used to be a huge push to make lefties use their right in school, even in this country. I’m surprised my father escaped it and continued to be a leftie.

Yes - and even younger people were also retrained to use their left hands. But it’s still curious that Obama uses his left hand for everything except when he has to touch the food he is eating.

"Would you like an extra helping of collards? (Down south, they are sauteed in bacon grease and garnished with bacon)."

Lets not leave out the Cat's Head biscuits, Virginia ham in red eye gravy and poke salad.

In the morning, the left over ham with biscuits and gravy and a side of grits.

If one had the time - one would try to get into a colored run restaurant for breakfast on Sunday morning.. Three elderly sisters ran the best one from their front porch in Huntsville, AL -- but you had to be there too early to get one of the limited tables...or stand in long lines while folks gorged themselves in your sight.
