The Right of the People

DBKP announces the opening of its new Second Amendment forum, moderated by RidesAPaleHorse. DBKP Forum: The Right of the People

This bears repeating...

Article [II.] "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

The Second Amendment

The Second Amendment guarantees: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

This guarantees a citizen's right to keep and bear arms for personal defense. The revolutionary experience caused our forebears to address a second concern -- the ability of Americans to maintain a citizen militia. The Founding Fathers trusted an armed citizenry as the best safeguard against the possibility of a tyrannical government.

James Madison, author of the Second Amendment, wrote that Americans had "the advantage of being armed," that was lacking in other nations, where "the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." Patrick Henry proclaimed the "great object is that every man be armed. . . . Everyone who is able may have a gun." The Second Amendment was then, as it is today, about freedom and the means to protect it.

OK, question: What would be the all round weapon for self defense? Shotgun, M1 carbine, .45 carbine, 30-06 rifle ... if terrorists were to attack in small groups ... say a small town to just kill people and drive off .... I'm thinking of Red Dawn, The Postman, scenarios like that .....

Does this question fall under the purview of legitimate in this thread?

The Bill of Rights was written to protect individual liberties from government abuse. Nothing in the BoR protects government “rights” only individual rights. That should be all you need to know to interpret the 2A.

Nice choice. It sounds small enough where it’s with you all the time. That beats the safe queen sitting at home. I don’t care for the idea of carrying a gun in the one thing that’s targetted by the bad guys to steal, meaning your purse but then it had to go somewhere.

Check into a IDPA match. They’re a lot of fun. When you get the time, that is.

Usually I’m wearing jeans and it’s stuck in my back pocket ... where you’d normally carry a wallet ... I wear a t-shirt over the belt so you can’t see it ... if I wear dress pants it’s in my right pocket and when I’m walking downtown Seattle/Tacoma my hand is always on it ....
