Mayor Nagin speaks out (highlights)
Times-Picayune ^ | 10 September 2005 | Gordon Russell, Staff Writer

Posted on 09/10/2005 9:00:31 PM PDT by Colonial Warrior

In a stark reminder of how drastically Hurricane Katrina has impacted the lives of New Orleanians, Mayor Ray Nagin has purchased a home for his family in Dallas and enrolled his young daughter in school there. Nagin, who spoke with The Times-Picayune by telephone from Dallas, where he has been since Wednesday, said he planned to return to New Orleans on Saturday. He said he will remain in the Crescent City while his family lives for the next six months in Dallas, making occasional visits to his family when possible. It’s not clear where Nagin will be living: His home along Bayou St. John suffered massive flooding, the mayor said, although he has not inspected it. In a brief but wide-ranging interview, the mayor reflected on the tragedies of the past two weeks, acknowledging that he may have made some mistakes but said that he hopes others in positions of authority – including President George W. Bush and Gov. Kathleen Blanco -- are scrutinized as closely as he and his staff have been. “I’m not pointing any fingers at anyone,” Nagin said. “But I was in the fire. I was down there. Where were they? I’m confident the truth is gonna come out. But I want everybody’s record analyzed just as hard as mine. “Listen, this was unprecedented. Nothing has ever happened like this. For people to sit back and say, ‘You should have done this, you should have done that’ … it’s Monday morning quarterbacking. They can shoot if they want, but I was there, and I will have the facts.”

I hadn't thought of that.

Do not misunderestimate the lil chat on Air Force One....

Nagin is a goof IMHO, but not a target of value.

This is about the only thing in which Jackson has a point. But the shelters north of New Orleans should have been provided by the state, and apparently they didn't do so.

Jackson blabs without thinking about what he is saying, and he just assumes everyone will lump everything as the fault of the feds.

I really hope Russert is taken by surprise. Just once I would like to see that fat lump cut down by soeone he attacks.

“I’m not pointing any fingers at anyone,” Nagin said.

That's a sudden switch in tactics.

I'll tell you what Nagin was doing:

He was stalling, to make Blanco look worse, knowing that in a couple days' time he was going to endorse Booby Jindal (no I did not misspell anything there) for Governor - against Blanco.

The endorsement came Friday, the day after Jindal's op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal effectively absolving Nagin of being a screw-up.

mary landrieu/Blanko both hate Nagin.

Now that is an interesting tidbit. Pray tell, why do Landrieu and Blanco hate Nagin.

As I stated in another post, I always had the impression that Nagin was honest. That probably turns 99% of the democrat party against him. However, now that they know that he is completely incompetent the democrats will probably nominate him for president in 2006.

Except George W. Bush and Gov. Kathleen Blanco...

"I can not believe that Nagin has not yet resigned his office. Has he no shame?"

He's a Democrat.

That should answer your question.

I think Nagin is the desired target of all serious dems. He is not only dispensable but they don't want an honest mayor in there for the rebuilding.

I hate to see him be our target and play into their hands. If they are unsuccessful at nailing Pres B, and I think they will be unsuccessful, we want them out there, exposed for the well deserved nailing they need to get.

Ah, no I did not have the stomach to watch her or woody woodpecker. I had not see her on the parade of celebrity/politicians that lost homes.

Of one thing there is no doubt she got her fanny out of the path of the storm. I haven't seen her putting forth one minute of time serving anybody but herself.

You sure Nagin's a Dim?

If so, why'd he endorse Bush for President?

He should be very careful about what he says.

Someone once said, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you." Nagin right now, and about 200,000 of his fellow LA's, are in Bush country, getting help, aide, and comfort from people that are mostly red. It might not be a good idea to finger point to much.

He knows Bush is clean. He knows Blanco is dirty. He is being clever. It sort of makes me laugh.

He used to be a Republican. Pulled a reverse Bloomberg to run for mayor and hat to be a Rat to get elected.

It's no New Orleans, but Greenville Avenue and Northwest Highway have some interesting entertainment.

He was a repub, changed parties to run for Mayor. NO would never elect a Repub. He was a businessman, and is honest.

Endorsed Jindal. I am not sure about Bush but he likes Bush.
