Mayor Nagin speaks out (highlights)
Times-Picayune ^ | 10 September 2005 | Gordon Russell, Staff Writer

Posted on 09/10/2005 9:00:31 PM PDT by Colonial Warrior

In a stark reminder of how drastically Hurricane Katrina has impacted the lives of New Orleanians, Mayor Ray Nagin has purchased a home for his family in Dallas and enrolled his young daughter in school there. Nagin, who spoke with The Times-Picayune by telephone from Dallas, where he has been since Wednesday, said he planned to return to New Orleans on Saturday. He said he will remain in the Crescent City while his family lives for the next six months in Dallas, making occasional visits to his family when possible. It’s not clear where Nagin will be living: His home along Bayou St. John suffered massive flooding, the mayor said, although he has not inspected it. In a brief but wide-ranging interview, the mayor reflected on the tragedies of the past two weeks, acknowledging that he may have made some mistakes but said that he hopes others in positions of authority – including President George W. Bush and Gov. Kathleen Blanco -- are scrutinized as closely as he and his staff have been. “I’m not pointing any fingers at anyone,” Nagin said. “But I was in the fire. I was down there. Where were they? I’m confident the truth is gonna come out. But I want everybody’s record analyzed just as hard as mine. “Listen, this was unprecedented. Nothing has ever happened like this. For people to sit back and say, ‘You should have done this, you should have done that’ … it’s Monday morning quarterbacking. They can shoot if they want, but I was there, and I will have the facts.”

Phyllis Landrieu , Aunt Phyllis ,... someone on another thread sorta intimated that Phyllis didn't need the position but the power structure did

Before his election, [Ray] Nagin was a member of the Republican Party and had little political experience; he was a vice president and general manager at Cox Communications, a cable communications company and subsidiary of Cox Enterprises. Nagin did give contributions periodically to candidates, namely President George W. Bush and former Republican U.S. Representative Billy Tauzin in 1999 and 2000, as well as to Democratic U.S. Senators John Breaux and J. Bennett Johnston earlier in the decade.

I hadn't thought of that.

But clearly there are two camps now. At the state Capitol is the tourism commision from NO working like little bees right next door to the Gov making plans for NO.

And Nagin was meeting in Dallas with NO leaders and businessmen.

And Nagin won the upscale and creole vote in No.

I tell you, a battle is going on while everyone is distracted by nancy pelosi, al sharpton and the rest of the usual suspects.

And money and perks are being divided up right now. It could get very ugly if Nagin talks and he just may do it.

This guy's all mouth, no brains.

Actually up until this point Nagin has been a pretty good mayor; especially compared the the past mayors. He seems to be honest and has rarely been criticized as far as I know. He recently came up with the idea of turning the Naval Support Center in Algiers (N.O.) into a federal city. This base was on the base closing list and his idea impressed everyone so much they took it off the list. I think it would have been a wonderful idea, IF NEW ORLEANS WAS ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

I agree that Nagin botched his job as mayor during the Katrina catastrophe. He was a complete disgrace on the news conferences that I saw. However, I was too busy evacuating, worrying about my house and keeping 5 yr. old twins entertained to feel too sorry for crybaby Nagin or the completely imcompetent Blanco. Kathleen Blanco is a disgrace to her gender and the human race. She is the embodiment of the Peter Principle.

Who is most important to go.

Landrieu/Blanco and their machine or the reforming Mayor of NO.

Because all wont go,, one group will be a scapegoat.

I nominate Misses Mary and Blanko.

Nagin on Meet The Press? thanks for the info. Let's see if Tim Russert's head explodes again like it did as he attacked Chertoff last week. Russert's rage was incredibly unprofessional, emotionally charged and dripping with disdain. Let's just see if Russert goes after Nagin with the same ferocity.

I'll be curious to see if Russert mentions the unused buses. And if Russert does, will Nagin uses the defense Jesse Jackson has laid out for him all week? Jackson said Nagin couldn't use the buses for evacuations because he didn't have permission from other places to bring people there. And Jesse says, "you can't evacuate people when you don't know where to take them".

I am going to early church so I can get back for MTP. My guess is that Russert will attack him before he gets any traction with his side of the story.<p.However, if he has been prepped by Cheney (who was in Texas today) perhaps we will see something more to our liking.

That's cool!! The black mayor of the most corrupt city in America is relocating to the second most corrupt ccity in America. It is good to see that Nagin was able to leverage his income flows from bribes, kickbacks, payoffs and skims in advance of Katrina so he could buy a mansion in the white part of Dallas.

The most secret and best coordinated aspect of the New Orleans disaster and the corruption associated with it, deals with the missing cops. It is reported that about 800 cops, nearly one third of the New Orleans police force can not be accounted for and are missing. Well, yes and no. The truth is that they never physically existed in the first place other than one the payroll system. Mayor Nagin and other black thug politicians and politicians have been collecting the salaries of about 500 phantom cops. That's how he can now afford a Dallas mansion and send his kids to the top white private schools.

Nagin and Blanco both had better hope it doesn't.

The truth is going to come out and until then, these two are going to continue to throw each other under the bus without a snorkel............

Mayor Nagin has moved to Dallas.
Does this mean he is still a mayor?
If so, does this make him the mayor of Dallas?
Or does he at least believe he is the mayor of Dallas?

Slack-jawed is, I think, a term precisely invented to fit Mayor Noggin. Has he done anything at all throughout this disaster but flap his stupid mouth? Is there no limit to stupidity and corruption in the state of Louisiana? Now to top every completely moronic mistake he buys a house in Dallas?

If I wasn't seeing this I wouldn't believe it.

“Listen, this was unprecedented. Nothing has ever happened like this..."

Yep, and you failed miserably Mr. Nagin. As did Blanco. Live with it, because a lot of other people are having to do just that. Well, at least the ones that survived...

Phyllis Landreiu, Mary's aunt. The former Mayor Landrieus sister or sister in law. There is a thread on this with minutes from the NO school board.

Nagin voted for Jindal, a repub. And he was going after long time deep corruption in NO at the highest levels. Mary's father was Mayor. Mary is very deep in the dem machine in the state and always has been.

nagin is an outsider who went off the dem plantation. Blanko and Mary both don't like him.
