    Very good advice.
I am going to take it. Not kidding.
Only problem will be the firearm part.
I have worked through this before on FR...I want to own a gun, but I am afraid of them. Perhaps I don't trust myself.

Local, liberal politicians are not prepared or equipped to provide help to citizens in a major natural disaster.

Let me correct that and remove a word:

Local politicians are not prepared or equipped to provide help to citizens in a major natural disaster.

Excellent, printing out and sending along

Go to a range and take one on one lessons.

You'll be hooked in NO time! Don't worry, if you handle it right, you won't get hurt. You'll have more fun than you realize!

And why do they call it a "mandatory evacuation" if it ends up being voluntary?

Equipped, yes. Prepared...in this case, clearly not.

They are selling small portable radios now like the sangen shortwaves that also have the XM satellite reception. I listened here on XM and can not say enough good things about the info available from that resource in such a disaster .

Must have ! I wish the little baygen radio w/ the LED lights had the XM or Sirrus capability. If all the TV and radio stations were knocked out for 500 miles in every direction one could still get critical info via that gem.....add it to yer BoB list Jeff.

Well thought and expressed. It is conclusively clear that the shortcomings, failures and inefficiency is on the local and state authorities: mayor and governor. They have failed as leaders, their irresponsibility before their constituents is appaling. I wish they could be demoted and thrown in jail for being "figures" without any substance.

Get with the NRA and arrange to get firearms training.
If you are caught in an inner city, or even on the road, or are even confined at your home in such a situation...and are prepared for everything except this...then you are at the mercy of who you happen to meet unless you can defend the preparations you have made.
I pray that is never the case...but this disaster and tragedy shows that there are those who will take everything you have and rape and/or kill you for the exchange.
 Just my thoughts.

I disagree. I believe there are some (perhaps not too many) good, moral leaders who can lead and use the resources within the bounds of their office to provide help to those in need.
Of course, the best place is for the person to help themselves, and then have their family, friends and neighbors help...but sometimes, a disaster is of such magnitude and incertainty that all of those are caught up in it. In such cases, a good moral leader can make a difference.

Exactly...they had no intention of making it mandatory. It "sounded" good.

I do not believe they are mentally, emotionally, or morally "equipped" if they follow a leftist/liberal ideology. Just my opinion.

A firearm is no more dangerous than an automobile. Cars kill thousands more than guns every year.

You can do it.

Terrible failings at those levesl IMHO from well before the storm ever made landfall. Apparently one of the weather service execs had to also lean on the mayor the Saturday before as well.
