What is the best weapon for my wife?

My wife, after years (since marriage) of not wanting guns in the house saw what happened in NO and realized that some people beome barbarians at the drop of a hat. We are in earthquake country and she now knows she needs to be armed (as should I).
She is very slight and tiny, so she needs maximum blasting power with minimum recoil. And I don't have a lot of money to spend.
The good news is that my wife understands the statement I taught her: Never point a weapon at anything you don't want to kill and always kill what you point our weapon at.
I assure you, she is almost Heinleinian -- say prayers for anyone who comes into her gunsight after I get one for her.

Humble opinion: 9mm or .45-cal pistol like a Ruger P89 (9mm) or something similar to an M1911 (.45-cal).

Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot
Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use
Take an NRA gun safety course.

20 ga. pump action shotgun with a 20" barrel. The sound of a shotgun being racked is often enough to disuade attackers and 20 guage with OO buck is enough gun but not too much to handle for a lightweight.
Mossberg and Remingtom make fine examples. Most favor the Remington and a good one, used is about the cost of a Mossberg, new.

some smaller women and women (or men) with little or no gun experience find a 9mm or .38 easier to use.

Well, I don't know about weapons but I do know that all the women in my life were masters of the pro wrestling move called 'The Testicular Claw.' It tended to get me to do whatever they wanted.

My husband bought me a nice little Taurus 38 special for my birthday a few years ago. I think it's a model 82? Not sure, they probably show it on the company website. They came out with a lighter one after I bought mine, but I've heard that the lighter one isn't as fun to shoot because it's not heavy enough to absorb the shock or whatever. Anyway, mine is not the light weight version, it's stainless and fairly heavy. I like it a lot, except for the fact that it's a little bulkier and heavier than some of those really cool little semi-autos for carrying concealed. A revolver is pretty foolproof, too.
I do need to use both hands to shoot this gun, I have no idea how it compares to other pistols because this one is the only one I've ever used. I was scared to shoot with a pistol at first, being new to guns, but I love it now.

I'd like to see her in a CQB mil-sim paintball game. ;-) Fewer than 5% of all shooters act CORRECTLY during their first gunfight.
My wife likes my Series 80 Colt.

Bersa thunder .380 small and compact little recoil....
Or P89... but that is a large frame hand gun so she would need bigger hands to be able to hold it properly.

The .45 is and excellent choice. The subsonic loads have the same energy as a 9mm with less recoil. The full loads are as hot (energy wise) as a 41 magnum, but in a semi auto. Choosing a semi auto over a revolver is a good choice for a woman, since the barrel of a semi-auto is closer to the hand so the recoil pushes back and is absorbed by the arm. A revolver tends to pull the wrist back and up and scares most women.

I meant to say...
She likes my Colt Series 80 .45 ACP, but she owns (among other things) and is profficient with an Armalite A-2, AR-15. We live in a rural area though, and your wife might not want to lug around an AR.
