Ugly Slump Continues-- Talk Radio Weak In Key Ratings Releases

What's it going to take to get talk radio out of this increasingly-dismal ratings slump?

The Radio Equalizer is tired of the post-election cycle excuse, since better-programmed stations are falling a bit less, while incompetently-managed outlets are getting creamed.

The emerging Spring 2005 figures paint an especially bleak picture that must serve as an urgent industry wake-up call. Spring and fall Arbitron releases are considered the most important for media buyers, a loose parallel to TV's "Sweeps" months.

Perhaps it is post-election burn-out.

Also, Arbitron doesn't capture internet listeners. I listen in my office every day to free streams provided by stations. Others listen on premium channels provided by the programs.

Could it be the natural pullback after unsustainable levels during the campaign?

Arbitron 'captures' who they wish only. The 'strength' of talk radio that arbitron measures is not in its listeners but in the sponsors. To whom do the stations and their owners pander? Not to the listeners desires but to the sponsors desires to offend no one and attract d' masses. Democracy is the rule of fools by fools, especially commercialized democracy.

Complete garbage. Nothing you said is true. Controversy rules. Just look at KFI. Milquetoast host have no ratings. And the way the buying works, even the most contraversial host gets advertisers.

Because Clear Channel has gone to all commercial, all the time, with the occassional interruption for the talk host to take a call or two.
