TOO BAD JEB BUSH DOESN'T KNOW REAGAN'S SECRET by Dr. R. L. Hymers, Jr.

March 29, 2005

I know something right now that Jeb Bush doesn't know. I know he made the biggest political blunder of his life when he decided not to intervene and save Terri Schiavo from starving. How can it be that I, a pastor of an inner-city church, thousands of miles from Florida, have knowledge about this that Jeb doesn't have? Simple - I know an old Baptist deacon, and Jeb doesn't.

My old friend is named "Mack." He fought in World War II. When I was 13, he took me to a Baptist church for the first time. I was the boy next door. I became a Baptist preacher as a result of going to church with Mack and his family back in the fifties. His wife died a few years ago and Mack moved back to Vernon, Texas. I call him once a week just to chat. He turned 88 last Friday.

Mack is my weather vane. Whatever he says is what the American people think - in their hearts. He's way more accurate than any CBS poll, because the wording of polls often confuses people. You never get a confused answer from Mack. "Nope, Jeb Bush was wrong. He'll never be President if he doesn't find some way to save that girl." And that is exactly what will happen, because Mack is never wrong - ever - when it comes to knowing what the average American thinks deep down inside.

That's how I know something Jeb Bush doesn't know. See, Jeb has great strategists, genius politicos, the finest advisors money can buy. But he doesn't have Mack - or anybody like him.

That was President Reagan's secret, you know. When Reagan was a young man, he spent a few hours every week in a barber shop in Dixon, Illinois. With an actor's imagination, Reagan was later able to transport himself back to that Dixon barber shop. And in his mind he would ask the old men, Baptist deacons, Sunday School superintendents, gas station owners, druggists - the old men of that small town in the heartland - what they thought he should do. "Fellas, what do you think I ought to do about Terri Schiavo?" Reagan would have asked the old men in the barber shop of his actor's vision. They never let him down - not on Grenada, not on Libya, not on Reykjavik, never! No one ever quite figured out how he always seemed to know what the people in the heart of America wanted him to do. That was Reagan's secret.

But, you see, Jeb Bush was raised a little too high-toned to hang around some old men at a barber shop. He probably had his dad's hair stylist give him a trim now and then. Trust me, a hair stylist is not the same as an old-time barber, and George H. W. Bush, his dad, is not the same as the old men in Reagan's boyhood barber shop. Been in Washington too long. Remember, his dad was the son of a Senator.

I wish Jeb Bush knew a couple of old Southern Baptist deacons - men in their mid-eighties - World War II guys. Just a couple of old Baptist deacons, retired druggists, or gas station owners. There must be a lot of old guys like that up in Jacksonville. He could call Jerry Vines, pastor of First Baptist there. He could say, "Dr. Vines, I need a couple of real old retired deacons, the older the better. Need 'em just to talk things over once in a while."

It must be old men, remember. Women have a way of being swayed by the sentiment of a twisted poll or slanted news story.

What would those old men tell him? Why, I already know, because I talked to my friend Mack, in Vernon, Texas today. The old men would tell him, "Jeb, get in there and save that girl. Do whatever it takes." That's what a World War II guy would tell Jeb Bush. And if he listened to an old man like that, he'd be a front-runner for President in 2008. The old man would not be fooled by polls. He'd tell Jeb Bush what the Americans really think in their hearts. They'd say, "Yep, that's the way Grandpa would do it. I'm glad there's still somebody around like him." And the red states would turn to crimson - for Jeb.

If he listens to guys like Karl Rove and the "poll watchers" you can kiss him goodbye. He will never again play a major role in politics. Too bad Jeb doesn't know Reagan's secret. That's why he won't send in the National Guard - as Reagan (and Mack) would. And that's why, unlike Reagan, he will never be President.

Terri Schiavo is important. I'm sorry, but she is not as important as wining the WOT

My blood runs cold when you say things like that. If we let this happen IN OUR OWN COUNTRY to a vulnerable innocent disabled American, we are doomed. Nothing else really matters. I'm sorry, really sorry, that you can't see that.

PS - If the "law" permits the court to explicitly prohibit a mother and father from giving their daughter, who is guilty of no crime, a drink of water or a spoon of nutrition, do you think it should be obeyed?

How would you like to be "permitted" into a room to see your disabled daughter condemned to die a slow agonizing death but "prohibited" from giving her the basic human care we would not keep from an animal or, even for that matter, a condemned mass murdered?

This is the "rule of law" to you?

When Judge Greer ordered that the family may not introduce oral nutrition and hydration following the removal of Terri’s gastric feeding tube, he committed a crime that should be apparent anyone. If a Florida judge issues a decree that parents cannot give food and water to their child, Jeb Bush should not need an old man in Texas to tell him that it is wrong. If Jeb Bush was a man deserving of my continued support, he would have himself recognized the wrong and not needed anyone to tell him.

Then what needs to be done is go the legislature craft a new law prohibiting what is being done to Terri.

Jeb Bush has done more for the democrat party than all the democrat leadership combined. By doing nothing at all. The democrats are going to be very grateful to Jeb Bush, you mark my words.

The question is not who is responsible for her death. The question is who could have saved her but didn't. Rightly or wrongly, those politicians who did not save her will forever be seen as calculating, untrustworthy, and even cowardly.

"So this guy would kill police and bystanders to "save" a woman who is, for all practical purposes, already dead. Jeb did the best he could and 2/3rds of Florida is already mad at him. If Jeb did somehting like that, he would be recalled in a heartbeat."

See, the thing is, I don't think he should be worried about being recalled. He should just be worried about saving a "citizen's" life. And why would it take killing police and bystanders to do that?

You may be right.

But the premise of THIS ARTICLE is that Jeb would be more electable if he sent in armed troops to the hospital.

I seem to remember that the Florida legislature and the U.S. Congress did exactly that, but the courts SPIT on the laws, ruling one unconstitutional and completely ignoring the express intent of the other, while allowing a woman to slowly starve to death as they considered the matter.

There is ONE THING Jeb could do now that would help Terri SPEAK to the WORLD after death, even as she was denied ALL SPEECH THERAPY in life.

Jeb could ORDER that there IS JUST CAUSE to have a STATE MEDICAL EXAMINER observe and HELP during the autopsy of Terri.

Don't know about you all, but I find george felos to be one of the most repulsive human being going I would not let him NEAR myself or any family member, and I believe he has the ability to move the medical examiner in Pineallas County to ONLY look at Terri's brain and to establish the exact cause of death from dehydration and starvation, ie a blo od clot from her blood which is becoming totally thickish and sluggish from lack of water, being thown into her heart or lung.

THE MEDICAL EXAMINER MAY HAVE NO KNOWLEGE OF THE MASSIVE BONE BREAKAGE THAT WAS FOUND WITHIN TERRI when a bone scan at Morton Plant Hospital was PERFORMED on her 53 weeks after her COLLAPSE. (Ordered by a doctor who noted horrific pain reaction in Terri to certain movements being performed by a therapist...Michael did have Terri in therapy for three years prior to getting the jury money)

It is critical, especially SINCE FELO KNOWS THE MEDICAL EXAMINER, said so himself, that the bone scan and the radiologists report about it ARE IN THE HANDS of EVERYONE in the Pinellas County medical examiners office.

Do any of you believe that a back that was broken in TWO PLACES, a broken femur, three BROKEN RIBS, TWO BROKEN KNEES and TWO BROKEN ANKLES are simply to be IGNORED?

Judge Greer DENIED a hearing on the bone scan....I have the link to the pdf file web address of the actual court petition by pat anderson wherein she asks judge greer to please investigate how Terri had such horrific injury.

Please help me ask jeb bush to send a state medical examiner and a forensic pathologist to be present at the autopsy.

This will be TERRI's LAST CHANCE to SPEAK OUT....her story of abuse and neglect IS WRITTEN UPON HER BONES....

If the man who claimed she wanted to DIE, is the perpetrator of YEARS of mental torture and physical abuse................THIS STORY NEEDS TO BE TOLD.

It will be a wake up call to the JUDGES of AMERICA.

Because the OUTRAGE will be INTENSE.

Please call and ask Jeb to make sure a state medical examiner is there to oversee the autopsy and to look into the bone scan results done in 1992.

PLEASE make sure the Pinellas COunty medical examiners office has a copy of the bone scan results............so that the examiner cannot plead that he has not knowledge of this...that cause of death was his only interest.

PLEASE DO NOT LET GEORGE FELOS AND MICHAEL SCHIVO STOP THE LAST CHANCE TERRI HAS TO CRY OUT FOR JUSTICE!

I don't think the Bush brothers and the legislatures have done nothing

While I understand your point, that actions have been taken, I disagree with the premise because none of those other branches of government took action to enforce their legislation.

I no longer believe in them, or in the rule of law (not THIS state of the law!!), or in anyone's good faith intentions.

I feel as if I've been left on the field of battle by my commanders, some of whom have joined forces with the evil empire, and others of whom have simply decided on a whim to pull out of battle. They are the Scottish Lords who betrayed William Wallace.

Either way it's a betrayal.

This is a watershed event for me.

Poem written by Chris Hansen:

I dreamed about the distant future. I saw an awesome sight!
People stood before Almighty God! Some on His left, some on His right.
I saw all people from first to last.
I saw them all, from the far future to the ancient past.
They came and came from their watery graves.
I saw the mightiest of kings, and the lowliest of slaves.
They rose from graveyards, from the dust of the ground.
I saw those who died and had never been found.
I saw tiny children with wonder and wisdom on each face.
I saw mothers run to meet them, and cry with each embrace!
I saw the old looking young again, as they looked into Jesus' eyes.
Jesus looked with burning eyes, to search each heart for truth or lies.
People stood on His right and left, but could clearly see each other.
I saw families divided, sister from brother, daughter from mother.
Then I heard His mighty voice:
He said, "Michael Schiavo, you made your choice!
I died of hunger but you did not care.
I suffered with thirst as I laid there.
I died very slowly, day after day.
Courts and police made sure you got your way.
But Heaven's gates shook as the people would pray!
My Father has answered each person, each prayer!
Your place is reserved! And I think you know where!
Know this my son, you shall live forever!
Your abyss is bottomless! Your escape is never!
Your mind will suffer eternal regret!
Your mind is eternal! You shall never forget!
Terri burned with thirst, but you will burn with flame!
She burned for a time, but your forevers will always be the same!
She suffered half conscious, but you'll be awake!
She escaped her torment, but none shall you take!
Now go to your destiny, as you have chosen to do!
Depart from me! I never knew you!"
Michael's eyes were filled with fear.
He knew it was forever, and that he had brought himself here!
Terri's eyes met his, across the great chasm between.
A look of sweet pity was all that could bee seen.
Jesus held Terri with each comforting arm.
His smile told her she would never know harm.
Michael and Terri glanced one last time, far across,
one look of great comfort, one look of great loss.
How tragic, I thought, Jesus died to forgive!
If only, if only, Michael had just helped her live!
For the rest of time, forever alone in his fate,
Michael will wail, "If only, if only, but now it's too late! Too Late! Too Late!

Good post.
I agree this is sad, and it is not Jeb's "fault".
But some people have to place blame somewhere, whether they are right or not. Might as well bash the Bush's...

The question is who could have saved her but didn't. Rightly or wrongly, those politicians who did not save her will forever be seen as calculating, untrustworthy, and even cowardly.

Under this rationale, any person with adequate weaponry is culpable for not using force to save her life. How many guns do you own? Why didn't you act? Very easy to cast stones when the blame is shifted outward.

I was just reading last night where an Oklahoma governor declared martial law at the sight of a bridge crossing over the Red River and claiming that it made any Federal court order null and void because it made him Commander of the Oklahoma National Guard.

Now I don't know the legalities of that wrt a federal judge, but it does seem to me quite the case that if the Gov of Fla declared martial law around the hospice, the law enforcement officers there now would no longer have peace officer authority, or would at the very least have to surrender that authority to the Gov. Failing to do so would make them insurrectionists. It would also render orders by the local judge null and void. In effect the authority of the Gov in that case would be clear and unambiguous.
