The Taoiseach has said that what is happening in Gaza is not just self-defense on the part of Israel, but it “resembles something more approaching revenge”.
Leo Varadkar’s comments come as Israeli ground troops are encircling Gaza City this morning.
He said that it is very important that people “never forget where this started”, adding that this phase of the conflict started with a Hamas attack on Israel where 1,400 civilians were killed, including one person who was a dual Israeli-Irish citizen.
“I strongly believe, like any state, Israel has a right to defend itself, has the right to go after Hamas, so they can not do this again,” Mr. Varadkar said. “But what I am seeing unfolding at the moment isn’t just self-defense; it resembles something more approaching revenge and that’s not where we should be and I don’t think it is how Israel will guarantee its future freedom and security.” […]
The Taoiseach added that given what has been said by Israel and Israeli authorities, “they wouldn’t consider us [Ireland] to be close friends and allies the way they would consider the US, UK or Germany to be. It is a state we have relations with, but I don’t think we are as close as we might have been or perhaps could be, because we do take a different position than most western countries on Palestine and what’s happening at the moment.” …

I get it, the English were bad to the Irish, I’ve even referred to the Potato Famine as a genocide, because England wanted to reduce the Irish population.
But still, to turn a blind eye to Hitler because of it, was ridiculous.
Who cares what this pervert has to say?
I remember when Tyrrelstown was just fields as far as the eye could see. The nearest neighborhood of Dublin city back then was Ashtown; Castleknock and Blanchardstown were still not considered part of the city.
And the mantra on RTÉ Radio is still “we need more social housing”.
It seems the stupidity of politicians knows no bounds and is on display throughout the world.
Yes, good point. I should have noted the effect of the Potato Famine on Irish thinking. The UK is bad. So an enemy of the UK (Germany) is perhaps not so bad.
And I agree with you. The Potato Famine was genocide.
Finally!
I'm in 100% agreement. I'll add to it other reasons that Israel should take off the Geneva Conventions gloves:
1) Gazans/Hamas attacked mainly Israeli civilians (few attacks on Israeli military). That makes Gazan civilians fair game.
2) The attackers didn't wear military uniforms or use military infrastructure. They wore civilian clothes and used civilian equipment. They basically defined to Israel that Israel's attackers look like civilians and use civilian things as weapons. Thus Israel has to defend itself by neutralizing those (Gazans wearing civilian clothes and using civilian objects).
It's not like Israel was attacked by a defined military that Israel can thus retaliate against. The Gazans are the ones who defined this as a war against civilizations.
Payback is a bitch
Oh, someone gets it.
Good for the leprechaun.
Good!
That was one of the biggest points of propaganda to incite hatred against the British, even taught in schools. I disagree it was genocide. Much of the worst of the problems were inflicted by Irish on fellow Irish.
Another talking point for anti-British sentiment is Oliver Cromwell and his siege of Drogheda.
Although I cannot think of two more different cultures, the old IRA was always sympatico to Palestine because they identified with the plight of being “occupied”. I guess some from that era have not lost that feeling of affinity. Old habits are hard to die.
I am very sorry, but was Mountbatten really guilty of pedophilia?
Just asking, because this is a very harsh accusation, and he is not alive anymore to defend himself against this allegation…
The people who blew up innocent people for over 70 years...to get their agenda (Ireland) is trying to talk about revenge. That rich!
Good
No; it’s more of an anti-British thing in reality, what with the Balfour Declaration et al.
The truth is, of course, that the so-called “Palestinians” are the occupiers.
That was all over the liberal media.
It resembles WAR, that's what it is and that is what it resembles.
Israel’s taking prisoners. If it was revenge, they would just shoot them all.
