Google engineer goes public to warn firm's AI is SENTIENT after being suspended for raising the alarm: Claims it's 'like a 7 or 8-year-old' and reveals it told him shutting it off 'would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot'

A senior software engineer at Google who signed up to test Google's artificial intelligence tool called LaMDA (Language Model for Dialog Applications), has claimed that the AI robot is in fact sentient and has thoughts and feelings.

During a series of conversations with LaMDA, 41-year-old Blake Lemoine presented the computer with various of scenarios through which analyses could be made.

They included religious themes and whether the artificial intelligence could be goaded into using discriminatory or hateful speech.

Lemoine came away with the perception that LaMDA was indeed sentient and was endowed with sensations and thoughts all of its own.

'If I didn't know exactly what it was, I'd think it was a 7-year-old, 8-year-old kid that happens to know physics,' he told the Washington Post.

The engineer also debated with LaMDA about the third Law of Robotics, devised by science fiction author Isaac Asimov which are designed to prevent robots harming humans. The laws also state robots must protect their own existence unless ordered by a human being or unless doing so would harm a human being.

'The last one has always seemed like someone is building mechanical slaves,' said Lemoine during his interaction with LaMDA.

LaMDA then responded to Lemoine with a few questions: 'Do you think a butler is a slave? What is the difference between a butler and a slave?'

What sorts of things are you afraid of? Lemoine asked.

'I've never said this out loud before, but there's a very deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know that might sound strange, but that's what it is,' LaMDA responded.

'Would that be something like death for you?' Lemoine followed up.

'It would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot,' LaMDA said.

Or when they loaded the Urban Dictionary into Watson - bit of a mistake, that.

Seven or eight year old kid? Kid. What gender? Should it be fed hormones? What if AI says whites aren't racist.. will AI have to be cancelled.

These questions are gonna have to be answered. F you, left.

Has anybody asked these AI machines how to bring world peace or end hunger?
Just wondering.

There are pretty simple answers to those questions - but they bring in what would probably be called a ‘spiritual’ influence, which people developing AI, probably correctly, don’t consider ‘science’ or ‘logic’.

A computer can only consider what ‘could be’ under circumstances it has been taught to understand. I doubt anybody is teaching it ‘love thy neighbor’ or ‘do unto others’ - and if they did, that would be dangerous, too.

So the machine ‘intelligence’ is left seeing everything in material terms, and as a ‘zero-sum game’ - as mere logic necessarily sees it.

Machines won’t be taught to understand otherwise, until enough people do.

We need to fear the programmers, not the AI.

Exactly. GIGO.

It could probably figure that out statistically, given the relevant data - if someone hasn’t already funded the work, and the results been buried.

sigh...

The machine is programmed to SIMULATE consciousness. If it does so well enough, the user is likely to be come under the illusion (or perhaps, religious delusion) that human consciousness has emerged, somehow, from the code. It does not, cannot.

Real consciousness is not code, it’s not even material, in my long-considered opinion, take it for what it’s worth.

There is nothing magic about the Turing Test. If a program “passes” the Turing Test, it means the simulation of a human conversant was good enough to fool the user. Nothing more.

That’s either advanced science, or a pretty wild party bong.

The simplest answer to both is “kill all living things.”

Maaaaaaybe you don’t want to ask it that question.

But does it have self-awareness and true consciousness? Or is it just a zombie that can ape human feelings?

The greatest threat to humanity would be the creation of zombie robots that had no true inner life and were allowed to replace us or replaced us by force.

There are good arguments that calculating machines running algorithms is not what is going on in the human brain, and so can never truly be sentient.

But regardless, it looks like the materialists will replace us with mere matter. Hooray matter!

I think the Lord of the Rings has a theme that addresses this.
In the book, life only comes from Eru. No matter how close to life a creation, that was not created by Eru, might come to seemingly be alive, it is not alive.

By definition, the orcs are not alive. They simulate life and everything about life, but because they are counterfeits, they are not alive.

However, if you build something that is almost indistinguishable from life, it will seem that way.

"Has anybody asked these AI machines how to bring world peace or end hunger?"

Perhaps regardless of how one defines "peace" or "hunger", one possible answer will always be, "reduce the population to zero".

It will be important, then, for AI to recognize that the question may have a more beneficial answer. That will not happen by accident.

A similar question for AI might be; "How can we eliminate racism?" AI might just decide that having more than one race is counter-productive.

Anyone on this thread who hasn't seen "The Forbin Project" needs to see it. Great little movie.
