The Civil War is about to loom very large in the popular memory. We would do well to be candid about its causes and not allow the distortions of contemporary politics or long-standing myths to cloud our understanding of why the nation fell apart.
The coming year will mark the 150th anniversary of the onset of the conflict, which is usually dated to April 12, 1861, when Confederate batteries opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on federal troops occupying Fort Sumter. Union forces surrendered the next day, after 34 hours of shelling.

Didn’t JR take away the Keyword privilege a couple of years ago because of all of a few people having fun?
Tinfoil? Not at all.. stayed up since about 10pm last night reading all of this (7am now), hence the headache .. and all of the pharmacies are closed today X(
I started seeing a pattern I had never really noticed or paid attention to before.. I (we) could be wrong, but it seems like we are not the only 2 thinking along the same lines.

It must be a burden for you, mooboy, To have been born absolutely and utterly perfect and without original sin.
You’re a candidate for eighth wonder of the world.
“You seem to be omitting that the entire 4 years was spent trying to repel an invading foreign army.”
Perhaps, the South could of held off the Union for a bit longer than four years if they had accepted the reality of the Industrial Revolution. The North understood the Industrial Revolution as did Great Britain and much of Europe.
Why is it that the South refused to industrialize? Were they all luddites or did they lack the literacy needed to industrialize?
If we are to take any lesson from history, it is that if a nation neglects to adapt to a changing technology or economy, the nation will fail.
And the Confederacy was a Failed State that only lasted four years.
But don’t worry. The CSA is not alone in its status of being a failed state.
Some failed states in 2010 that will keep you company are:
Sudan
Chad
Zimbabwe
Central African Republic
Haiti
East Timor
North Korea
Republic of the Congo
Uganda
But somehow I doubt that in 150 years the people of Zimbabwe will be all so proud of the Zimbabwe of 2011.
Yet you seem to be unfamiliar with the fact that the South lost the war, and the South finally accepted that they couldn’t terrorize a segment of the population back into submission. Stop living in the failed past of your delusions and join the world as it really is. Like Pelosi and company, you guys lost and for good reasons.
"bait feast"? Frankly I prefer a good salmon fillet or albacore steak to bait any day.
Nope. It doesn’t hurt. Not in the least. I consider the source.
You’re the typical “I’m more conservative than you are” neo-con with dark secrets to hide in your closet. Eventually your dirty deeds and secrets will come out. No one can play the charade forever. When you make your slip, it’ll be a doozy. ‘Thou dost protest too much, methinks’, and all that.
Of course, it is entertaining and fun to watch you toss out crap and hope it stings. It doesn’t and it won’t. I’ve made my peace with the controlling authority that matters. It sure as H*ll ain’t you.
:-)
There's no demonstrable truth to any part of that.
“...slavery would have ended...”
If the Confederacy wanted to end slavery, why is it that they wrote the following in their Constitution?
“No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.”
It sure does not appear to me that the CSA had planned to do away with slavery.
Please tell us where you get the idea that the Confederates had planned to abolish slavery.
“..all our ancestors wanted was independence..”
And what do you think those who were held in Slavery during the Confederacy wanted?
Is there any reason why the wants and desires of your ancestors were more important than the wants and desires of those who were held in slavery?
Yawn.
Of course, the Confederacy had not one thing to do with any carnage. No, none whatsoever. No Confederate ever harmed the hair on the head of anyone. The South populated with Godfearing, Bible-loving, peaceful, generous, pure of heart and body, golden souls without an impure intention ever contemplated.
The South was simply the sad and unwitting victim of all the destruction and death dealt in the entire affair.
Had Lincoln never been born, no evil would have been visited upon the lands.
Is that about right? Isn’t that the lost cause Confederate mantra? It was the other guy’s fault...we wuz innocent!
With that mindset, it’s no wander you guys sport wood when you reminisce about the murder of President Lincoln.
Spoken like a good demoncrat. Nice application of Alinsky tactics, there, "comrade cowboy". You've had formal training, I see.
I predict that by post 1000 the CSA Apologists will claim that the Confederate Attack on Fort Sumter was not an attack at all, but rather a False Flag operation carried out by Lincoln and disseminated by his criminal associates in the Yankee Mainstream Media.
Interesting.
Are you saying that I shouldn’t be allowed to freely associate on this conservative website? Are you intimating that, because I hold an opinion different than yours, my time is “wasted” as opposed to yours? Is yours the only opinion that counts?
