Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.
It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.
Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.
News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.
Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

You're the one who seems to think the child has no business existing.
Sadly I think the child is cheated by fate, and by irresponsible Surrogate pseudo parents.
We're salaried employees.....but thanks for your opinion.
While you're wishing, would you like a pony?
Cheney, unlike you, is not anti-family.
I mentioned "disappointment", YOU mentioned "abortion", don't attribute your thoughts and words as mine own. Your sounding more and more like a liberal.
"No kidding .......if this was Chelsea Clinton this thread would be fire + brimstone and 2000 posts long."
If this was Chelsea Clinton (or some other Democrat), she'd be on the talkshows promoting lesbian parenting as the new wave of progressivism.
The difference is between a private life publicized inadvertently (because Dick Cheney is VP) and a life which is intentionally directed to make publicity and push an agenda.
"Your sic) sounding more and more like a liberal."
So it's Conservative to point fingers and sneer at the private decisions people make about their lives? I thought it was Conservative to leave people alone to make those decisions. It's hard to keep up sometimes.
Two lesbians with a child are not a family. How the Vice President and his wife handle this situation is their own private business. However, glorifying sexual perversion and the raising of children outside of a real family, as the term has been understood in Western civilization since the rise of Christianity, is inimical to decency, traditional, Biblical morality, and the foundational principles of our nation.
Apart from the other obvious abominations, artificial insemination is an abomination, and also "surrogate motherhood", sperm donor and other things that totally go against our human nature.
Well, some people on here claim that gay parenting is akin to child abuse, so it seems a bit odd to say that its okay to abuse your child unless you flaunt it in public.
Now this is Cheneys' grandchild, and I am sure, like other grandparents, they will love him or her no matter how they are conceived. I think their response is perfectly natural. But I also believe that Mary Cheney's decision to conceive with her partner while her father is still in the spotlight in some ways does more to promote gay parenting than mere activism, but making it seem normal.
Personally, I think that like or not, gay marriage will be legal eventually, simply because of the tide of individual cases like this making it more and more acceptable.
How about prenatal surgery? Gene therapy? organ donation? Blood transfusions? Antibiotics?
"Moms"
Nope, one is going to be a mother.
Further proof that "The L Word" is nothing but a figment of the male imagination.
Not to mention that attitudes toward gays have changed significantly in the past generation, and there is no evidence that trend will deviate from its present course.
Societies and cultural mores change.
If however the non salaried worked do extra we do get paid for that but it is very rare nowadays overtime is really a thing of the past.
BUMP.
I can't believe the partisan "tolerance" that exists here, of course, we've been seeing that on this site since 2000. Wrong is wrong. I suppose I missed the memo stating that if "our side" does "X" then its ok.
If Chelsea Clinton was a lesbo and doing the same thing the Cheney's daughter is doing this whole thread changes.
Bunch of hypocrites IMO...the whole lot of them.
Um, 'this' is his daughter. The one that you're supposed to love unconditionally?
Personally I think he's being dishonest or has put family before principles on the issue.
Yes, I agree he should be like Alan 'Carpetbagger' Keyes. Disown your own family for political gain. Because you can't look bad in front of 'true conservatives' right?
Then discover them visiting the kitchen and having long Father/Daughter talks with the turkey baster.
