Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.
It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.
Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.
News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.
Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

I hate to break it to you, but the US also seems to allow the "Mary Cheney life style".
Notice how the oh-so-tolerant posters here keep telling us they "don't agree" with the lifestyle or child-rearing decisions of the mom-to-be. Like the libs, they reduce moral issues to matters of taste. I didn't see a single post that called the decision to bring a child into this relationship what it really is: EVIL, pure and simple.
No complaint. I guess I got confused. I thought Mary was the guy in that relationship. Turns out, she's having the baby. So I guess the other one is the guy. No complaints. I'm happy the Cheneys are having a lesbian grandchild.
You think one's political beliefs are genetically planted, and not learned behavior?
Somehow, one more refrain of "Rove you magnificent bastard!" might add a bit of levity.
The "future" is changing all the time. More and more people know children who were conceived by other than "traditional" methods. The difficult time you project is less and less likely all the time.
Don't just tell us; take action. Write a really nasty letter to the Vice President. :)
If you think the traditional method of conception is "dignified", you've obviously never seen yourself in a mirror while you're "doin' it". ;-D
A huge disappointment? Maybe they should pressure her to have an abortion? >:P
No
No matter what, it still takes a man to complete the reproduction process. It doesn't matter if it is active participation during the process or storage of sperm in a reproductive repository.
Queers cannot reproduce amongst their kind.
I feel sorry for the child. Hard to turn out right with two mothers.
She should be paid one and half hours less per day than the rest of you she would be at our company. She would be classed as full time due to the number of hours under UK law and entitled to any benefits this gives you but she would and should not be paid for hours she did not work.
Another child forced to live without a father.
The same goes for holiday entitlement that should be based on the number of hours she works
Absolutely I am with you on both points.
