Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.
It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.
Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.
News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.
Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

I think with aunt and uncle with 5 children and a grandfather Dick Cheney the child will be quite aware of the difference.
One has to wonder if Heather, obviously the more masculine of the two, ever goes hunting with VP Cheney......
[snip] As I said before we do not need to agree with his position or his daughter's life style choices but at the end of the day I think the family deserve respect as to the classy and non confrontational way they have dealt with it.
[snip] I would put my family first too.
I never said he should cut her off or disown her. I said he should distance himself from the *issue* not necessarily the person. I think the veep should stand up and be counted and say he opposes this type of behavior.
As for putting your family first, in general I agree, but in this case not at all. This is a matter (for me) of immense national importance and the veep standing idly by while his daughter engages in this is essentially an endorsement of it.
That doesn't mean he shouldn't still love her, it just means he shouldn't let this pass just because she's his daughter. I've never know Cheney to fear the media or lib hysteria on anything else, why on this? I think potentially he makes it more difficult by not taking a credible position on it.
If a senior politician refused to criticise (say) corruption because his own daughter took bribes, would that be ok because he was putting family first?
How do you make the quantum leap from being disappointed to abortion..? That simply is not an option and I'm wondering why that would even enter your mind. Two wrongs don't make a right.
Very true
I am sure you are right that it is harder for her.
Oh yes I have. :-D
Well if that's the case - in his heart of hearts, not just because it's the easy way since he loves his daughter - then the country really has gone to hell.
Perhaps you need a little help in the reading comprehension arena. Sunsong wrote:
I hope people here can muster some common decency and show a little of the dignity and class the Cheney family demonstrates.
What part of "Cheney family" is unclear? While Mary Cheney is openly homosexual, she does not seek the limelight, or try to force her lifestyle under the noses of the rest of us. The liberal media and the democrats (but I repeat myself) do that.
The Cheney family, from the Vice President all the way down, has sought to underplay this item of (probable) tension in their family, shielding it from the glaring klieg lights, keeping it out of the withering stare of the public. I'm sure there are political considerations in that, but there is also a whole lot of "Mom and Dad love their kids unconditionally, even when they might disapprove".
If you disagree with the sentiments someone posts, say so. But to seek refuge in impugning someone's masculinity because they have the vision to see familial love at work is appalling.
BTW - I don't believe that a homosexual pair should have children (through birth OR adoption). It has no bearing on what Sunsong said. Dick Cheney and his wife (my memory fails me on her name, at the moment) have consistently faced up to this personal issue with class and love for their family.
Where is this country going and what is it doing in this handbasket?
Sadly, if he is not a Christian there is no reason to oppose it and quite a few reasons to support it.
Rosie O' is a Democrat above and beyond anything else.
Thanks. They say memory is the first thing to go... And I forget what the rest of the list said... ;-P
In this case, Heather is one of the two "mommies".
How sad that the Cheney's have to grin and bear it.
Mary and her friend lead selfish and sad lives, play-acting that they are just doing what is normal and natural; the biology alone screams to us all just how unnatural and abnormal this is.
The homos figured, dad will be gone out of the picture in two years... so this is the perfect moment to "push for the queer family." Sorry, but I am not stupid... I know how these perverts think.
Remember the "agreement," you keep your sh-- private, and I have no problem with that. You make it public... to advance an agenda... well, you will meet the disapproval of those who oppose that lifestyle.
I got to tell you something, the homos are VERY ORGANIZED... If you don't know that by now... then they may be right to think we are a bunch of idiots :)
