Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

I have asked him not to engage in personal infighting on the thread. Now I ask you to do the same.

Let's all respect the children.

No, that's not right. I understood they were trying to contact him, he called dispatch and gave them 10 seconds to back off, they tried calling him on the cell phone and order a the line to back down...and he started shooting in less than 10 seconds.

When shots were fired they stormed the building.

There's a sign for "Paradise" just past Thomasville... what is it?

Paradise Township begins where US 30 crosses Paradise Creek, just west of Thomasville where the road begins to slope uphill and ends at the Adams County line.

Doesn't matter... There are no "reasons" for a heinous crime such as this.

Once again the shooting started when the police stormed the building. Whatever happened to hostage negotiators? When will the police learn that they can't do everything by force. This might have turned out differently if it was handled differently.

Will you PLEASE pay closer attention to the news before accusing the cops of doing something wrong here? First of all, the guy OBVIOUSLY was there to kill and not negotiate. Second, the cops were establishing a perimeter upon their arrival and then the perp asked them to move back. They were in the process of doing such when the shooting started. ONLY THEN did they rush the schoolhouse, and for good reason.

I would seriously hope you ask the mods to pull your post.

You might want to work on your comprehension skills. The shooting had already started BEFORE they stormed the building.

The HOSTAGE NEGOTIATOR tried to ring him on his cell phone, the number which the got from the radio station he called saying he was going to start shooting in 10 seconds if the police didn't leave. At that exact moment that the negotiator tried to call him, the guy started killing, execution style, the little girls. The police then stormed the building, but he had barricaded the doors. By the time they were able to get in through the windows, he had killed himself and a bunch of children.

They got the guy on his cell - they had their #1 negotiator ready - but that's when he gave his 10-second warning and started executing the kids - and that's when the cops assaulted the building...

This guy had a plan to kill and the cops did not cause the deaths...

And especially post-Columbine, the cops know they can't just wait these killers out...

In the Wired article, the elders were just starting to consider cell phones, but it was written in 1999, so I guess they've resolved that.

I have a group of Amish men doing some work on my house. I was shocked to see a cell phone on the eldest man. I asked him about it and he said if they want work they need to be able to get in contact with the outside world. He turns it on 7AM and it gets shut off at 4PM no exceptions. The battery is charged up on his generator

Once again the shooting started when the police stormed the building.

Unlike Columbine, where the police were nice enough to wait until the killers had finished murdering students and killed themselves before they went in.

The police are NOT at fault here!

I was thinking the very same thing. No school is safe anymore it seems. I can not understand why someone would hurt little children like this and all of them little girls. I have gone by that school many times while in Amish country. Prayers for the families and the children.

"Lancaster" is a name/spelling that is pronounced very differently depending on where you are from

The very large So Ca suburb of "Lancaster" is pronounced LAN-CAS-ter...

the problem is two very diffrent spoken names ...LAN-ki-stir, & LAN-CAS-ter... both spelled "Lancaster"

Like Canada (the country) vs La Canada the city

I predict the following:

The media will turn on the Amish once they are not allowed to cover any funeral and are not granted any interviews.

Slaughterhouses? Not quite. I do hope that you at least taught your kids to capitalize cities and spell them correctly though.

In case you haven't noticed, laws do not stop sick, evil people from doing anything. They only lay out a groundwork to punish the sick, evil people after they have broken them. If some nut job kicked in your door with a gun, would you really have your gun so handy you could stop him while you are in the middle of your homeschooling session?

My biggest problem I am noticing is that it seems very clear that the negotiating isn't working. I am also tired of reading the perps died of a self inflicted gunshot wounds.

However, we also have to consider the Amish view of firearms. Until today, this was really unthinkable, they are one of the most insulated societies in the world.

We're not allowed to lock up the homicidal mentally ill for being that crazy anymore. We have to wait until they kill people.

Hell, society has to fight tooth and nail to even *keep* the convicted homicidal nuts locked up without parole. Gotta protect their civil rights, you know.[/ACLU]

Prayers for the innocent dead and survivors...

. Arm the citiznes and let them defend themselves. Arm all the teachers who so desire, arm the administrators...at home, arm yourself. Train in firearm use and safety...but be prepared. When a few of these animals are knocked down as they walk into an office or classroom brandishing their firearm, such instances will markedly decrease as will the bodies such animlas pile up.

I agree, but the Amish will go back to being the same as they were. They are a very passive people and I would bet they won't arm themselves. They will forgive their attacker and pray for his soul.

Nope. Came right out of the Amish Homestead in Lancaster. And you can see them "carrying", too.

These people deliberate about whether a device/technology is OK or not. Cell phones are deemed OK, at least in Lancaster. Wired phones outside the homestead are OK, too.
