"then anything Carter really wants to scuttle, he should come out in favor of?"

Well, as you know, it comes and goes. One time he thought Arafat was Willie Nelson, you know with the head garmet and all.

I have a different take. GW is not the bumbling idiot his political enemies want to believe. Remember the Harriet Meyers nomination? Perhaps, and I say perhaps, this is a test of our nations' will and fortitude to prevent such an occupation of our ports..........Frankly, I oppose the UAE doing this, despite they are a friend. On the other hand, there are those within their population that would blend in with any arab nation.........

referring to Ross Perot?

"that funny guy from Texas saying something about how dangerous it is to deal with the middle-easterners... "

probably has to do with their willingness to LIE to make a deal (just like politicians). I always liked Ross...

I will support or oppose it as I see fit, once and only once I know enough about it. You picked one line out of my post to take issue with, but answered none of the questions.

Furthermore, I am not sure an enemy too close makes sense. If I can see, hear or know where he is, I can take appropriate action.

Nuclear power Plants are qualitatively different - I am not aware of any foreign-owned Plants and I doubt CFIUS would approve that - the Ports cannot be moved very easily either.

There's no reason for us to be paranoid about this issue. Just visit Dubai yourself and you'll be impressed.

Have you met EVERYBODY there? Just curious.

I listened to Rush today. Was really disappointed. Wondered if White House was pulling strings.

Since Rush's legal troubles began, he really can't afford to alienate the white house or the republican party in general.

Notice that he had come out against the white house or the republican party on several issues like spending or Miers but after a day or two has retreated and stated that after "further reflection" the issue is actually a great example of "strategery".

Unfortunately, Rush's legal problems have reduced him to being a party cheerleader.

If you know what it REALLY is all about, then SPEAK UP, we would like an explanation, Bush hasn't given one so far.

The God-like genius of George Bush can only be explained with the benefit of hindsight, so please save your question until next year.

"GW is not the bumbling idiot his political enemies want to believe."

He is not. But he is being ill-served as of the past two days.

I wonder what this thread would have said during when Nixon went to China. Not to draw comparisons completely.

Cute Line...
But it Still doesn't change the FACTS....
This from Al-Jezeera:

Arab-Americans: US bigotry showing
Wednesday 22 February 2006, 2:34 Makka Time, 23:34 GMT

Arab-Americans have contended that bias and bigotry, not security concerns, lie behind the uproar over a deal that would place commercial operations at six US ports in the hands of an Arab company.

The furore centres around the $6.8 billion acquisition by UAE state-owned Dubai Ports World of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. P&O which had been running operations at shipping terminals in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami, and Philadelphia.

James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, said on Tuesday that politicians were exploiting fears left over from the September 11 attacks to gain advantage in a congressional election year.

"I find some of the rhetoric being used against this deal shameful and irresponsible. There is bigotry coming out here," he said

"Bush is vulnerable so the Democrats jump on it. The Republicans feel vulnerable so they jump on it. The slogan is, if it's Arab, it's bad. Hammer away," Zogby said.

Anti-Arab bigotry

According to some industry analysts, the change in management would have no real effect on security, which would still be carried out by American workers to international standards.

The UAE, whose government owns Dubai Ports World, is an international financial hub and close US ally.

"The Emirates have been very pro-active partners in helping our security. They have a solid track record of cooperation," said Peter Tirschwell, publisher of the Journal of Commerce.

"I find some of the rhetoric being used against this deal shameful and irresponsible. There is bigotry coming out here" James Zogby, Arab American Institute

Rabiah Ahmed of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said members of her organisation also believed anti-Arab bigotry was driving the debate.

"The perception in the Arab-American community is that this is related to anti-Arab sentiment," she said.

I thought the same thing - LOL - but then I checked into the CFIUS process and currently have no problems.

Have we got a good "apologist" (to use a term from theology) site that explains why the deal with the ports is a good thing?

I'm late to the party. I'm eager to hear a good one though. Really.

Let's see is that the same Homeland Security that brings us those airtight borders with Mexico and Canada. Oh and is it the same Homeland Security that runs FEMA? Could they also be the same guys that run airport security - the TSA - searching more old lady's than you can shake a stick at. What about the in effective FBI? Could it be those guys?

"Security at U.S. ports is the responsibility of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, not the companies that operate the terminals."

Did you review this before you hit 'post'?

See if you follow this:

ConAgra=United Arab Emirates

Farmer=America's DHS

Fields=America's Ports

Who *really* controls the farm (ports)?

"I always liked Ross..."

Was it the ears? jk. Ross was okay, but the ideals he espoused was a much stronger draw.

P&O doesn't want to be in the "biz" anymore, which is why they're selling.

Savage just reiterated something one of his callers said: that P&O quickly extended their contracts at the ports of Beaumont and Corpus Christi, contracts moving military equipment, and now we will have the Dubai company moving our military equipment.
