Southern heritage buffs vow to use the Virginia gubernatorial election as a platform for designating April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.
The four candidates have differing views on the Confederacy, an issue that has been debated for years in the commonwealth.
"We're not just a few people making a lot of noise," said Brag Bowling, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the oldest hereditary organization for male descendents of Confederate soldiers. "This is not a racial thing; it is good for Virginia. We're going to keep pushing this until we get it."
Each candidate recently shared his thoughts on what Mr. Bowling called a "litmus test for all politicians." Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would not support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Former state Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore would support something that recognizes everyone who lived during the Civil War.
Sen. H. Russell Potts Jr. and Warrenton Mayor George B. Fitch would support a Confederate History and Heritage Month. Many past Virginia governors honored the Civil War or the Confederacy.
In 1990, former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder, the nation's first black governor, a Democrat and a grandson of slaves, issued a proclamation praising both sides of the war and remembering "those who sacrificed in this great struggle."
Former Govs. George Allen and James S. Gilmore III, both Republicans, issued Confederate History Month proclamations. In 2000, Mr. Gilmore replaced that proclamation with one commemorating both sides of the Civil War -- a move that enraged the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Gov. Mark Warner, a Democrat, has refused to issue a gubernatorial decree on either side of the Civil War.
Mr. Kaine, another Democrat, would decline to issue a Confederate History and Heritage Month proclamation if he is elected governor, said his campaign spokeswoman, Delacey Skinner.

IF you WERE (and i believe even YOU know that what you say is FALSE!), there MIGHT have been SOME small justification for the TENS of THOUSANDS of WAR CRIMES & CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, that were committed by "the filth in blue that flowed down from the north", against UN-armed, defenseless civilians & helpless CSA POWs.

the killing of lincoln was an ACT of WAR & as LEGITIMATE as killing Saddam Hussein IS.
lincoln was the CIC of union troops & thus a COMBATANT.
J.W. Booth was a SGT in the VA militia, so what he did was also legitimate, as an act of war.

It's hard to see how 'Tonto' could be construed as racist when there's a native indian tribe with the same name, not to mention a national forest. I'd also like to point out that all this information was made available to 4conservativejustices and stand watie some time ago on another backroom thread.

Without getting into the rightness or wrongness of the term "Tonto," I just want to say that Watie is the king of playing the race card around here, accusing anyone who disagrees with his crazy opinions or challenges his unfounded assertions of being an anti-Indian racist. He's repeatedly accused me of such, without ever being able to point to where I've said any such thing. At one point he told someone that I posted such poisonously racist things that an entire thread was pulled. According to him, every university is hiding secret letters from Lincoln in which he spouts racist sentiments, but which only he has been allowed to see. According to him, New York City is the most anti-Semitic place in America. So, Watie crying "racist" holds little water as far as I'm concerned. He's a habitual liar whose every post on these threads drips with venom, lies, and victim playing.

Watie may be eccentric at times, but he is not a habitual liar. I also know him to be very proud of his heritage, both Confederate and American Indian. New York DOES have a lot of anti-semitism, in my opinion.
Of this I have no doubt, and more power to him. But I'm proud of the various ethnicities in my heritage, too, from the Italian coal miners to the Irish and German-Americans who served under the US flag in the Civil War. But I don't trumpet them on a daily basis, or accuse anyone who disagrees with me of being anti-Italian coal miner.

So how do you explain that Watie constantly cites academics of whom no trace can be found (Lainie Briant?), books of which no trace can be found, even in the libraries in which he says they're available, cites "secret" Lincoln letters which are unknown to any Lincoln scholar, even of the DiLorenzo stripe, and says that there's a German U-Boat on display in Galveston which was captured by privateers commissioned by the state of Texas? Do you accept that all of these are true? Why is it that Watie never cites a single verifiable source for anything?
Well, I don't know of any German U-Boat on display in Galveston, (I go there almost every month), I do know there is one that was sunk by coastal artillery. (at the bottom of the bay, that is!)
Watie is an East Texas boy, so maybe that was a tale told to him by kinfolk. As for the rest, I haven't verified or disproven......
I do know he means well.
There is a Tonto Apache Indian tribe in Peyton Arizona.
There is a Tonto National Forest also in Arizona.
There was a beloved Indian television character named Tonto .
How can Tonto be a racist term toward Indians when there's a tribe of Indians in Arizona who use the name?
For the record, I've had my arguments with watie & he's never pulled a race card with me. I haven't seen him do it with anyone else. He's definitely gets under the skin but that's if you let him. So the guy doesn't like NYC. I don't like New Orleans. He's got his reasons & I've mine. Like his, mine have no semblance to logic, reason or fairness.
By the way y'all, the origin of this thread has to do with a Confederate Holiday: yea or nay?

I was just thinking about placement of the holiday, how about Memorial Day weekend? We just place it on the Friday before & make it a four day holiday & just party 'til dawn the following Tuesday! Now that's a Holiday to be proud of.

I was not going to respond on 'stand watie' & '4ConservativeJustices' running around Free Republic with their rash of false accusations & lies, tagging me as some sort of "racist". Since they are out of control and have involved numerous people on this particular thread it's best to put an end to this matter now.
Stand & I go back & forth concerning his number one issue, as he does with many others. I have come to expect to be bombarded with classic Stand insults only has he can fire them off :) I let the normal double doers of standard barbs slide off, return them in full, or respond with humour, realizing it's in Stand's nature to defend 'cause', blasting out anyone who does not totally agree with him 110%.
Stand was going on & on about 'damnyankees' murdering his relatives & Indians back in the mid 1860's and blaming me along with others. Finally I said something to the effect 'clam up Tonto and give it a rest' then he responds I am a racist, a bigot, I hate Indians, I am a moron, typical Stand lingo everyone encountering him is very familiar with.
Recently I tried to get him off his single issue in order to speak on economics, the Middle-East situation, high energy costs, OPEC, Israel Iran, and other topics from threads I posted which have absolutely nothing to do with the Civil War, 'Yankees', 'Confederates', Indians or the 19th century. Mr. Stand would not respond even though I linked threads for him. The lack of responding was not surprising.
This is a sample of Stand posting to 'Non-Sequitur' "perhaps N-S is unhappy. after all, he LEADS the unionist coven on FR. leading a motley collection of BIGOTS, morons, idiots & at least one (presumed)racist is HARD on the soul."
It never ends, always the same lines. The next one was directed at me:
"so NOW,moron, you're ridiculing our AmerIndian cultural & religious traditions??? are you also a RACIST too, as well as a FOOL???? "be gone to DU."
When he was asked for prove nothing came forth as usually. Plus I was unaware of what 'DU' was until two days ago and after checking the place it's full of the commies, terrorist supports, radical Dems, etc.

My response was the following when I got finally logged on FR, but Stand had been screaming in a number of posts to me, as if I was there:

On many occasions 'Stand' has defended a guy by the name of 'Kirk Lyons' already known to some on FR as being deeply interlinked with Aryan nations-Klan-skinhead types, and then he has the nerve to label those he terms 'damnyankees' as racists? This whole thing is foolish and should expected by now.
Stand's very own tag-line "(being a damnyankee is no better than being a racist. it is a LEARNED prejudice against dixie.)" is a rather bigoted declaration since it attacks the overwhelming majority of Americans. If new people enter Free Republic and see that line, it's not the best image to say the least.
Another classic 'Stand' statement: "as my grandfather used to say: you can tell a damnyankee is LYING if his mouth opens."
One of many incredible quotes from '4ConservativeJustices': "Slavery was LEGAL while they were in the Union, and Lincoln advocating making slavery PERMANENT."
He just invents as he goes along.
FACT: Speech by Andrew Stephens, vice president of the Confederacy: "Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery -- subordination to the superior race -- is his natural and normal condition."
'Stand watie' and '4ConservativeJustices' do either one of you support the above statement from the number two man?
In post #679 I posted the follow after Stand repeated stated I was a 'RACIST' (his capitol letters) and a number of other not-so-nice terms.
Mr. Stand posted 'Modernman'; & 'All' the following: "he will NOT say if is he IS or IS NOT a racist. i simply asked him to say, YES or NO."
'Stand watie' and '4ConservativeJustices' assumed they had mastered the Big Lie tactic, but got bagged, again. :)

You really did push stand's button on that. I realize that you may not have intended to make a racial comment, but that is what it came across as. May I suggest a polite apology? It might go a long way toward toning down this discussion.
